Oculus Rift

Received my Rift yesterday and set it up, checked out Luckys tale and a few demos, felt great.
Bought Project cars this morning, Jumped straight into cart race and nearly vomited.
Loaded up Adrift but was still feeling dodgy so turned it off.
Not suffered from motion sickness before so Im hoping I just need to build up my playtime to get used to it.
Do most people get this the first time?

Bit of a mixed bag. I've not experienced any nausea, just occasional slight discomfort when racing bumpy tracks in a go kart but it quickly passes.

Some of my friends are fine with it too, some aren't. My girlfriend started to feel a bit sick after a few minutes, my neighbour instantly felt very sick.

Try plying with the g force and world movement settings. Set both to 0.0 and then move one up individually at a time by eg 0.2 each time and then have a try until you find what you are most comfortable with (which could be both at zero!).

G force simulates your head being chucked around by forces acting on your virtual body, too much of that can induce sickness since you aren't feeling those forces. I personally find I like just a slight amount of g-force induced movement to feel natural.

World movement is effectively horizon lock. At 0.00 the horizon will always stay level and the car will move around you so to speak. This sounds a little counter intuitive but it is actually closer to how your eyes and body work when actually driving. Next time you drive take note of how as the car bumps and moves around the horizon stays still while the steering wheel and dash move around in your vision.

Again for me personally I like a little in between. A little above zero feels most natural to me.

Biggest issue i'm seeing the Oculus forums seems to be the optics suck, people saying there can be bad glare/smearing of bright areas.

This I find suprising. I will await to hear from someone who has both a Vive and Oculus CV1.

On forums most people seem to just be moaning about the fact they havent got theirs yet or the wait is too long. It would be interesting to see the sales if both the Vive and Rift were released on the same day with unlimited stock

I have both of them.

The screen is clearer on the oculus, almost as if there is less screen door effect.
The field of view is also larger slightly.
The headset is made much better, feels like it will last much longer, great materials.
Its so much more comfortable to wear and lighter.
Having the headphones built in is just so much easier and faster to get into vr without messing around.

The vive has like a binocular view, almost like looking out of two huge circles.
I feel the screen is only slightly less clear.
Very little glare effect, cv1 can have a lot of glare affect especially when there is a white object in a dark scene. This can be very annoying.
Having to mess around with your own headphones is quite a big negative for me, as putting on the headset and taking it off requires the extra effort.

However, saying all this i still enjoy both but tend to go more to room scale with the vive as i enjoy those games more, especially because i have a decent size room 2.5mx1.9m. Its knowhere as big as i wished it would be but still works well for room scale.

I just feel lucky that i do have both :D

we called the glare ' god rays ' they are pretty annoying especially when the apps are not designed in such a way that takes them into account, DK2 never had these, it seems to be a side effect of the Fresnel lenses

The other issue I have is distortion, like straight lines bending when you turn your head, it happens when you dont have the headset precisely in the right place, so fairly frequently, for me the perfect optical point is slightly above ( about 2mm ) where the headset likes to naturally rest, I guess it will vary for each person though.

Hmmm, i dont have any distortion on the rift. Infact it appears in the vive only.

But yeh the god rays can be distracting.

are we to assume the oculus and vive are going to be like consoles where they aren't updated for 3/4 years, or more like phones where each year is a new version? i'm ages away from making my decision, but i wonder if it's likely i'll get one say xmas time and enjoy it for a couple years or should i just completely skip this one and look to cv2

If you order it today you might get one at xmas.....

No idea tbh, I wouldnt have though CV2 would be out for at least a year personally, but would like to be proved wrong.

No update on mine yet, ordered beginning of April, still delivery TBD. :(

(

that's my point. let's say around xmas i decide to order one. let's assume there's a few months lead time, so maybe march time i'll get it which could be close to the next release.

part of me thinks it's got to be like xbox cycles else we will have the issue where no one will want to purchase as between vive, oculus and morpehus, a new one will always be around the corner, however then i think for instance with oculus now it's out what have the team got to do other than mass produce it. in a years time we will have better screens, fast response, so why not get cv1.5 out etc.

Ive already got one, however its slightly faulty and Ive been waiting 6 weeks already for a replacement, a week and a half ago i got told a return label had been emailed to me, after a couple of days i replied that it still hadnt come through and now a week later still no response.

I've had it, its going back for a refund and I'll wait for a company that appears to know what its doing to release a newer one.

I don't think these will be updated annually, at least with how the current manufactoring problems. Maybe after 5 years or so they could move to the annual update model but i feel we are still quite far away from that happeneing.

If anything at worst (or best - depending on how you look at it) we will have the current headsets around for atleast 2 years before new one releases. So id say that there release cycle would be in between how the cycles currently are for smartphones and consoles.

Decided to cancel my order and let the VR situation settle for a few more months, might have another look at things once touch is out.

It won't be 800 when it arrives in a month and I'd feel dirty doing that anyway...

My thoughts exactly. Morally I couldn't do it. And to clarify, I have no negative feelings towards those that might, it isn't my right to. I just prefer to make my mountain of cash without taking advantage in opportunistic ways.

Really disappointed by how Oculus are handling worldwide distribution. In North America they're fulfilling preorders that were placed more than 5 hours after they opened (with shipping windows almost a month from now). Europe is stuck at around the 40-45 minute mark, and we've just had confirmation that there will be no more processing until the start of next week.

I have a 1:30-ish order with a shipping window of 6-16 June, so while there's still a good chance they'll hit that window (and it'll be the end of the window if they do) it's at the expense of parity with other regions, and as such doesn't leave a good impression.

The way Oculus have handled communication and the distribution process has been a series of baffling decisions, and it makes me less inclined to trust them as a brand. It does make me wonder if they've decided to concentrate on their North American market because it's simply more straightforward for them to fulfil orders there and to get units into retail stores.

I dont really understand why anyone would cancel the rift order when you can easily sell for £800 on ebay

By the time people get faulty ones and wait another three months for a replacement they probably wont be worth more than a couple of hundred on ebay

After three weeks of "we have sent you a shipping label please check your inbox" and no actual shipping label (which finally did come via a link in a ticket once I raised a chargeback via credit card) I had had enough

Ok I have an issue. Playing Elite Dangerous 2.1 After a while 15 - 30 mins, I will get a memory warning, usually elitedangerous.exe and the game will slowly die or crash.

Windows 10 64 bit, Inno 980 TI. 8 gig. Starting elite from launcher.

Anyone else? Any idea's?

Seemingly only Elite and I can make it crash very fast by upping the sampling rate.
