Oculus Rift

Congrats on the new kit :)
I was quite wow'd by the into with the robot before I even tried any games :)

I'm using Cable Matters
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00C7S2FRE
and UGreen
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P0ES0YE

What cable did you try and how did it fail?
is it a cable for the sensor or the HMD?
What port are you plugging it into? one on the motherboard or do you have a USB expansion card?

Thanks for the links, it's much appreciated. I will get one ordered in the morning. :)

It was one of my front sensors which was too short if I had the cable routed out of view so I used a unbranded usb 3.0 extension. The setup software said it couldn't see the sensor. I just unplugged the extension and ran the cable across the wall as a temporary measure. Everything was fine after that.

I also have my third sensor installed and once I found the right position with help from the setup software I was ready to go.

So what has been your favourite game so far?

Robo recall so far, but I'm looking forward to trying lone echo
The lab and Rec room are fun.
Also bought star trek, space pirate trainer, elite dangerous and pcars2 for the oculus in the Xmas sales.
I haven't played much tbh since fixing the cable.
I spent my first few days just playing with the free stuff before killing the cable.
Pcars2 demo is good, it feels quite different playing in VR, the ability to look toward the apex and driving close to other cars seems easier to control. Ive only been using an Xbox pad for now, but want a playseat for my old wheel next.

Also purchased some of those sea-bands things for motion sickness. Hoping they might help a little *shrug*

A nice collection of games there and some of which I have in my collection but yet to try.

If you get a chance try Arktika.1 I had my first go tonight and blew me away, I just cant get over how good this VR stuff is.

Has anyone had an issue, when they close the Oculus software their Windows 10 start bar (auto-hide enabled) goes transparent?
There's just an outline of the bar, I can see the desktop behind it and there's nothing to right or left click on.
If I open the Oculus software again or restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, it reappears.
I'm about to reinstall the software but just thought I'd ask first if anyone knew what it was and how to fix.
Windows 10 Pro and Nvidia 980Ti with everything up to date.
Thanks for any help.

I have Windows 10 and a 980ti and don't have that problem, I would just reinstall.

Setup my rift for the first time today since getting it in the black friday sales and it has to be the easiest setup process I have ever done.
Not even a hiccup, it just worked.

Onto the experience... OMG...

I found myself speechless with a huge grin on my face the likes I haven't felt for many years, I only played a few of the tutorials, google earth, experiences :)D) and The lab so far - over 6 hours of giddiness!

I had prepared for the worst in respects of the poor resolution reviews but honestly it didn't bother me at all, if anything, it adds a 80's scifi feel to it which I actually like.

Seriously, this is amazing! :D :D

First impressions like this are always good to see :)

This is what people don't get, when I say I watch my old film collection in Cmoar Cinema. Anything from the 60's 70's, 80's, and even some 90's, is how I saw those films originally. To me watching them in the native res of the vive, on a cinema size screen is just another amazing experience.

Might be a thing if your in to oldschool stuff. If so standing at a arcade cabinet in the Neon Retro Arcade, looking at a old school CRT is 100% authentic.

How would people describe the visual quality of the rift? I got one second hand from the mm and the quality isn’t particularly startling, in some instances it’s quite hard to read text. Is this normal?

Make sure it's adjusted and sitting correctly on your head. Then look at SuperScailing if your hardware supports it.

It's not perfect, you need to move closer to text in a lot of games, but the overall experience is still great in my objective opinion. In 5 years it'll be perfect, right now it's very good.

This is very much my subjective opinion and I'm not trying to put anyone off, just to manage expectations.
Although I was fully aware of and willing to accept the screen door effect I am disappointed with the image quality.
As an example, in Robo Recall with so much going on, at first it looks great but the more I try to concentrate on something in particular I notice how blurry and unclear the images are.
This is also very apparent in the Rift Core 2.0 balcony scene when looking at the ships.
The clip in this YouTube video shows pretty well what it looks like to me.

That being said the 3D effect is amazing and I find the whole motion tracking aspect of the games to be reason enough to keep me interested and having fun.

Supersampling is your friend (assuming you've got the grunt), but it's never going to be crystal clear.

Personally, I went into this with low expectations of fidelity and was therefore pleasantly surprised about how good it can often look, while not being too disappointed when it doesn't look so great.

I'm running stock i7-4820k and gtx1060 so I wouldn't say I have much grunt. Is it enough for supersampling?

To be fair I've never really looked at graphics in a game and been amazed so I'm pretty hard to please. The video linked to above is roughly the quality I get, I'd say I can see slightly better quality but I see a lot of diagonal lines which I presume is from the lenses?

Is there any way to push the goggles further away from your head? My super long eye lashes catch the lens which isn't ideal but I also see slightly better quality when I move them about 3-4mm away from my head but IU can't see any way to adjust this without wedging something between my face and the goggles?!

The supersampling level you can get away with really depends on what game/app you're using. Your 1060 may well struggle a bit in the more intensive stuff like racing sims etc.
You ideally need to chuck on some AA when you can too.

You could happily use 2xSS + AA in Bigscreen, but even then, text isn't going to be crisp unless you have a screen pretty close to you.

The diagonal lines are the structure of the display itself. The lenses simply magnify it. Not much you can do about that.

No real way to move the lenses further away, unless you use some thicker padding like VR cover used to have, but no longer sell in their store.

Sounds about right. For desktop use it's still not there for me, although the idea is amazing. Pulling windows out of my desktop and placing them around my area. The text at my comfortable viewing distance and size, although eligible, is an effort to read over long periods. So, until higher resolutions it will be a small part of my desktop use, but still amazing when i do. As for gaming, this is now 80% of my time and 100% my interest going forwards. I found i got used to the resolution quickly and now easily see past it. I now find my fitness more of a problem than the visuals :D
