OCZ Vertex Owners Thread - Test Results

Just got 2 x 30Gb Vertex today. Flashed to 1275 (came as 1199's).

Installed and running Vista 64 as RAID 0 with a 128k stripe. All tweaks applied (as per other posts here and at OCZ forums).

Gotta say I'm mighty impressed so far... almost wish I'd shelled out for a third drive to get the extra space:)

Bit of a blip in the middle here tho, not quite sure why yet but gonna see if there are any further tweaks / driver updates to go yet.

looks a lot more stable now :P

looks around 360mb/s read and 300mb/s write now in raid0. Its about 50% faster in read and write than a single drive comparing it to the screenshot a few posts up. He was using windows 7 tho, would be great if you could do benchmarks on that!

Just added another 30Gb drive on firmware 1275

3 x 30Gb RAID 0, Stripe 128, Aligned to 128, Onboard ICH10R controller.

All usual tweaks done.

First run on ATTO gave:

Am well pleased with this. Still got some Vista updating to do as decided to go with complete reload so might get better performance yet, will re-post if significant changes.

According to Tony all models include 64MB cache. The besides the cache isn't the reason for sequential speed differences, its the amount of channels that can be accessed at the same time. The larger drives can essentially do more simultaneously. Other SSDs with less than 64KB of cache are capable of similar speeds, so the cache is irrelevant except when it comes to wear levelling.

It depends on how the cache is used. If it's used for i/o write combining etc then the 64MB will make a difference with more overlapping i/o.

Can you list what the "usual" tweaks are and what you did?

Hiya,

I did the alignment as per the OCZ advice from this link It's very quick and easy BUT you will need RAID drivers avail if you're going down that route (I had an old HDD in the system which had a previous Windows installation on it so I could use the RAID drivers for the ICH10R by browsing that drive)

I then did the tweaks as per this OCZ link but I didn't do the SecondLevelDataCache tweak (about half-way down post#1)

I haven't yet tried the "Installing a ramdrive and Internet Browser tweaks" which is post#4 on the second link above.

They are very good guides and coming from OCZ themselves are obviously tailored towards their drives. So far so good! :)

Hmm, have now undone one of the tweaks from earlier post as was causing system to take very long time shutting down. One of the registry tweaks was to enable the clearPageFilesAtShutdown. Only trouble was I had moved my pagefile to a Samsung F1 and that seemed to cause no end of grief at shutdown. Have now disabled that registry setting and deleted the pagefile altogether and now running fine again. We'll have to see how it goes with no pagefile, although having 8Gb RAM should help, but I think I remember reading that there are some progs that require a pagefile to load whether they use it or not... hey ho, let's see what happens!

Hmm this thread is really making me want to go out and buy some of these drives.

Quick question though, if I put 2 of these in raid, would I get any gain in buying a 3rd to put my games on or am I not going to see much of a difference if I just lump my os and games on the 2 raided drives?

You prob wont see much of a difference. I started with 2 x 30Gb and only really decided to get the 3rd as 60Gb total wasn't enough for what I wanted. There is of course a speed increase with the 3rd drive in the array but tbh you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between 2 and 3 in real world usage - apps open so fast with 2 that you dont really need 3. I suppose you could put OS on a 2 x SSD array and then have games on another single SSD, but you'd be sacrificing speed there, so may as well RAID all 3 together...

If you are going for just 2 then I would suggest getting larger than 30Gb ones. I have seen others recommend just putting your OS on a single SSD and then using a fast mechanical drive for apps/games etc - something like a WD Black perhaps? This is slower but also far cheaper.

If you can get 2 x 60Gb SSD's then I would say that should give a good balance of capacity / speed / cost.

Whatever you decide good luck! :)
