My guess is while they may have some cooling purpose, be that from the engine or brakes (I've not studied it up close), I suspect the main reason is so that you can tell and M3 from the plebs in their 318d's :p Its certainly the first thing I look for to confirm its a real M3 and not some body kit :)

Narrow driveway with gate posts and gates - whereas ours is a widened entrance, no posts or gates and chuffng wide once you're through the entrance :D. It's obviously doable - my Saxo's on the narrow one right now and Mum's got the 5er on and off many times before without incident. I've just been to chicken to try getting the 5er on it (wider than my car, and not mine if I do bash it!), and she was just unlucky and scraped the gate this time :(.

Quite why the Polo only appeared on the map 2 years ago I don't know....
 
Well there's a police van guarding it at the mo until the truck comes. All doors locked etc, the police can't tell me when it was stolen though?? My neighbours notice everything though, so I will be asking around tomorrow. I think I am most likely over reacting.. but even still I'm spooked, feel like I'm being targetted !
