Offical PSP2 (or rather NGP) Thread

Not really no, you may seem some games with stationary back drops that look a bit like this but not how its done with fully rendered backgrounds better animation and improved textures. For example the latest spec leaks for a possible iphone5 are dual core versions of the cpu/gpu in this, but in the NGP they are quad core with dedicated GPU memory. John Carmack has already stated that when phones get to the same hardware level as the NGP they will still be a generation behind due to the differences in the APIs.

Have a look at Epic Citadel, Infinity Blade, Real Racing 2 and Dead Space on the iPhone 4. They are not "stationary back drops" and while perhaps are not the quality of NGP they do look similar to what i've seen on NGP so far and better than any other portable device out at the moment.

No one for certain knows what the specs of the iPhone 5 will be and you also have to remember the App store is a massive plus for Apple and ios devices. I bought Dead Space for £3.99 do you think we'll ever get a AAA tittle on NGP for that price?

I do concede that games will look and play better on NGP than any other portable device for quite some time and I can't wait :)

With people going on about price, I can see Sony taking their usual route. Getting the public all high hyped up about how powerful the NGP is....yes in early development. Next thing you know, 6 months down the line Sony announce hardware changes had to be made to the final model to be more cost effective.

First thing would be the ARM CPU being reduced from 4 core to 2 core. Which would degrade the over all performance of NPG. OLED being changed to a standard LED. Ive noticed some mobile phone manufactures have been doing this. The GPU spec reduced or 3G removed.

Already seen with PS2 which was suppose to have Toy Story real time graphics but that obviously wasn't the case. The original PS3 spec was meant to have two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports. Again, this wasn't the case and was reduced further after the 60GB model was discontinued.

I could be wrong but it would not surprise me.

+1

A friend of mine brought over his iPhone 4 and put on Dead Space. While I was watching the intro, I thought "the FMV looks good" and it wasn't until it zoomed behind Issac and I took control of him that I realised that all of what I saw was ingame!

I couldn't believe that the iPhone 4 was capable the gfx of this quality - IMO not far of the 360/PS2 version!

I own a Samsung Galaxy S and I've not seen anything on my phone that comes close and if the the PSP2 is as good as the specs make out, then it will be a happy time for hendheld gamers.:)

I'll give Sony one thing they sometimes give a free game or movies if your an early adopter I think I was able to send off for a free Spiderman movie UMD when I purchased the PSP. Then the Go came out and they gave away 10 free games. I wonder if there will be any freebies for early adopters of the NGP. :)

Wasn't the offer with the Go designed to stimulate sales?

So I doubt it unless the NGP bombs really badly! :p

You are talking apples and orange though. Removing frankly two pointless ethernet ports, an extra HDMI that 99% would never need and 4 USB ports that again most would never need in no way is the detriment to any title in development or your enjoyment of the system. As far as I am aware, and I'm happy to be corrected, once the Cell and RSX had been decided upon it didn't get changed to save money.

You cant give developers a dev kit, let them start making games and then say "oh btw, we needed to change the spec to save money, you now have 50% less power to work with."

Its conceivable that they drop the OLED screen but on the flip side, a standard LCD would draw so much more power that battery life would need to be beefed up so it wouldn't be worth it.

Also remember that the PS3 was frankly revolutionary technology. The NPG just expands on existing tech. So its going to be expensive, but not monstrously so like CELL.

You'll probably see two different SKUs at launch, one will be WiFi only and one will also have 3G for a premium. They may also decide to lump in different internal storage sizes with that to boost percieved value. So maybe the WiFi one has 16gb for £250 and the 3G one has 32gb for £300

I'll deffo not be getting the 3G one for the 3G since I can just use my phone as a hotspot. But if its got something else that I find value in then mabe i'll get it.

Would have been nice for one USB on the back of the PS3 though.

Like Tute i doubt you are going to get anything like the PSP Go offers. They did that to try and stimulate the market for the device and the market wasn't interested. Not because the device was crap (its gorgeous and I love mine) but because its was a) priced much higher than it should have been and b) it was DD only which meant you cant use your UMD games, cant buy used games etc etc. The Go was a tester and Sony learnt that the market is just not ready for a DD only machine.

The NGP isn't going to have that. Its a brand new system with a set of games totally unplayable on the old PSP. The fact that you can also play any and all digital PSP content is a bonus for everyone and Sony would be loath to start offering too much out when there is no need.

The key for them is to get more developers to release stuff digitally like Square Enix with KH:BBS.

If we're given the option of 3G or WiFi only then I'll pass on the 3G as no way will I take out another phone/data plan just to play games with a rubbish 3G ping on the rare occasion I'm not in a WiFi zone. I honestly think 3G on NGP will be pointless.

The kindle can only download books, the live features/location based apps would need much, much more bandwidth, theres no way networks would sign up to a kindle based model, expect ipad like data contracts.
Also they showed how its gps can track your loaction all the time... good luck with battery life with that enabled :D
The 3g model is some what pointless (now android/iphones can do wireless hotspotting)

Your sgs has twice the gfx capabilities of the iphone 4, download dungeon defenders or similar to see what it can do.

I don't think phones should really be mentioned in the same sentence as this. It has nothing to do with them whatsoever apart from the fact it has 3G and then you don't really see the iPad being compared to phones, it's just a mobile gaming device and will have far deeper stuff than Angry Birds, Plants v Zombies and the other popular but mostly shallow mobile games.

If people want a comparison on that scale then go and look at the Xperia Play or whatever they're calling it.

I don't know entirely. There are plenty of people who don't have a smartphone and so don't have that option. Smartphone penetration is still really small in relation to the amount of contracts taken out.

Ultimately though I expect a premium to be put on the 3G option as its a luxury and not a necessity. I just hope they dont lump too much else in with that SKU otherwise i'll have to get it and just not use the 3G

That leaves two cameras, a compass and GPS that can go :p

I have to admit, the following worries me a bit:

Multi touch screen (capacitive type)
Multi touch rear pad (capacitive type) (Same size as the screen)
Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass

I don't want any of the gimmicky crap, if I did i'd buy a 3DS. What's wrong with just making it a good gaming machine without having to shoehorn in the latest fad?

true enough, but unless that impacts on the software why does it matter? all of that stuff is in every smartphone anyway so itsn't exactly cutting edger expensive any more. Looking at the device, the only thing which really is that we know if is the screen.
