***Official 2010 F1 thread***

An interesting aspect of McLaren's statement on signing Jenson Button is the repeated mention of "Vodafone McLaren Mercedes":
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is delighted to announce the signing of the reigning World Champion Jenson Button to a multi-year deal. He will be partnered by 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who will be embarking on his fourth consecutive season as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver.
...
"So that's why I've decided to join Vodafone McLaren Mercedes"
...
"It's fantastic news that Jenson has decided to join Vodafone McLaren Mercedes"
...
etc., etc., etc.

Are McLaren (aka Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) trying to make some sort of a point here? ;)

Entertaining to say the least!

:D

I'd call him a selfish loner. He was the only driver to *not* be a member of the drivers association this year - that tells me he's only concerned about himself and couldn't give a stuff about anyone else.

Being in the F1 drivers association is about as pointless as it gets. They say one thing then do another. They still drive like ****s and cannot pass each other without crashing 90% of the time or running each other off.

Or when the rain comes down start crying it's dangerous.

Many drivers could never see the point of being in it.

I'm certainly happy to see Jenson at McLaren - he's no fool, and I'm sure he knows he's having something of an Indian Summer, might as well make hay. If he can beat Hammy, and I'm sure he can from time-to-time, it will only be in his favour. All the while making serious reddies, and also having won the championship.

Let's face it, how many out of 6+billion get to play with the ultimate boys-toys for a living, and even fewer get to score most points. Well done Jens, and best of luck.

On a different note: 2010 looks tremendous at this early stage, I think full-fuel will be a game-changer (and work in JB's favour) and hopefully look nothing like the silly "no-tyre-change" rule which, well, was just silly, and dangerous.

Roll on Fred, Vettel, JB, Hammy, et. al. And to continue rambling, I'll be interested to see how Ruby fares with Williams.

No, just standard marketing stuff. Presume it's part of the sponsorship contract that vodafone and mercedes should be mentioned in the full team name during all communications.

The GPDA was founded to make F1 safer for drivers. It doesn't make any difference if F1 is currently much safer than it used to be, it's still a valid cause to be a member of, and as Kimi is the only F1 driver not to bother, that says a lot about how he feels about his driver peers.

If I was Hamilton I would be s******g myself. We all know Hamilton is fast and takes risks, but this means he crashes a lot. He is also very hard on the car and abuses his tyres.

On the other hand you have Button who is fast, consistent and more gentle with the car. So when Hamilton crashes, guess who is going to be picking up all the points?

Button could potentially embarrass Hamilton.

Yes, this is an interesting point. I imagine similar thoughts went through Mansell's mind when Prost joined Ferrari, and Senna's mind after a few races in the same team as Prost.

One hard charger, one softly softly catch the monkey. Could go either way. The hard charger might blow the doors off the sensible old hand, or the hard charger might hack away at 1000mph going nowhere and stuffing it in the scenery whilst the sensible old hand quietly picks up podiums here and there and stretches off into the lead.

This will be an interesting line-up at McLaren next year! Don't be fooled into thinking McLaren are taking on Button as a soft and sensible backup boy - they had one of those in Kovalainen and he didn't last very long.

I believe that is that case, plus didn't they enter 2009 as the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team

I've noticed that when ever it rains hard, Webber really comes out strongly against racing in the wet.

I wonder if Senna was still around what his opinion of racing in the wet would be.

Gerhard Berger spoke about him driving in the wet stating that there was no other driver who found that kind of edge/limit which senna did.

You'll remember THIS year I used to call Button a journeyman, happy to pick up pay cheques and finish at the back of the grid. His move to McLaren is a clear indication that in 2010, this is absolutely not the case. I don't think any other top line driver would have the balls to go up head to head like this (that includes Alonso or Vettel).
.

edited for accuracy , Im sure Brawn was already created when I last saw you say similar;)

edited after reading further - laughs at how many excuses you come up with

This is certainly true.

In fact, any team who operate a No.1 and No.2 driver policy want the above scenario to happen. They expect their No.1 driver to deliver, but if the No.1 driver retires, they expect the No.2 driver to pick up the pieces. The problem is that as we have seen with Alonso (while he was with Renault) and Hamilton (with Heikki as team-mate) - when the No.1 driver goes out, the No.2 driver is usually so far behind, he can't pick up the pieces.

I honestly can't see how Button is going to compete against Hamilton - everything is stacked up against him.

If I was top line driver there are few things I wouldnt do - join MS at Ferrari or Bennetton, join Alonso at Renault, join Hamilton at McLaren, join Senna as team-mate - a season or 2 later, my career would almost certainly be over.

So, I'm not allowed to give my opinion now?

And I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Prost was with Senna for 2 years. He couldn't hack it and subsequently he left. Since then, Senna never drove as team-mate to another top life driver.

No top driver has ever agreed to drive with Alonso. I think Button was offered the chance and he declined.

No top driver was ever rumoured to be joining or expessed an interest to goto Ferrari, while MS was there.

Obviously, my thoughts are echoed by top drivers of yesteryear.
