***Official 2010 F1 thread***

Hmmm . . . let's have Daytona Ovals

Yes, 'cause that's the only alternative to what we have now isn't it....*sigh*

Actually, I'd quite like to see what F1 cars could do on the Daytona road-course circuit (the one they put the sports cars on, uses part of the oval and an in-field runaround like the Indianapolis F1 track). I'd be willing to bet that they'd love it. It's a great track, perfect for spectators as well. Though there are a few places in America I'd like to see F1 go first - Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Road America. In fact, Road America (or Elkhart Lake depending on how old you are) really would be good IMO.

And hell, you should hear the bitching that goes on in the States regarding NASCAR, a sport that can see more overtaking in one race than a full season of F1 these days. Complaints about how the cars can't really follow each other without getting tight or loose (that'd be "understeering" and "oversteering" for those who don't speak American), complaints about how all the tracks are getting similar (they call them "cookie cutters", we call them "TilkeDromes"), complaints about all the classic tracks being squeezed out of the calendar (Darlington, Rockingham, and countless Southern tracks in their case, several hallowed venues in the F1 world in ours).

The silly sods don't know how good they have it. Even with all the stupid stunts the NASCAR governing body has pulled in the last few years (and there have been so many ). Oh, and they also have to put up with Fontana having two dates on the NASCAR Cup tour, which I would call justification for a spot of mass murder at NASCAR HQ....

I can't understand why its so hard to get the 'overtaking' side of things back to the 'good old days' surely you sit down.. look at how the cars used to be.. how they are today and then alter the rules to suit  :(

When are we going to hear if Ari Vatanen has become FIA President?

Surely its easier to say "increase mechanical grip by 30% while decreasing aero" rather than redesigning multiple tracks

Less reliance on aero would then mean closer racing and easier overtaking

(as Brawn has recently said)

Maybe it requires both - but just changing the tracks personally I dont see as making much difference

Some tracks need tweaking, others are fine.
An aero cut, less effective brakes, and the drivers not being punished for being aggressive driving will soon sort it out.

Correct.

Also remember that the FIA/Stewards discourage risky/aggressive overtaking. Any racing incidents generally reward the driver with some form of penalty which means that most drivers prefer to hang back and overtake when safe to do so, ie. rarely. Overtaking during the pitstop phases is something we must now accept as the norm in F1. Next year refuelling will be removed, but I still feel that most of the overtaking will occur during the pitstop phase.

I honestly don't see why any driver should bother to overtake on the track, when he could do so in the pitlane or ride out the race and pick up minor points (as opposed to having points docked and getting further penalties).

Unfortunately, F1 as we once knew it (in the 80s and before), has changed...probably forever. Get used to it.

Spot on

Yet a lot here seem to want to criticize the probably 2009 Champion for doing just that

The last WC blew a HUGE chance in his rookie season by making stupid mistakes, and then there was the ridiculous stewards & Spa-gate, not to mention almost throwing it away again in Brazil with risky manouvers early in the race

Sometimes it feels like we have to wait for the result to be ratified 2 hours after the race rather than actually believe whoever took the chequered flag will be allowed the win!!!

Intimidation and unsavoury behaviour, round 2.*

Ah, Max. How lucky we are to have you in charge at the FIA. And soon to be in charge for much longer as well, given that there is no way you'll allow the election to go in Vatanen's favour.

Perhaps he's been reading "How To Win Elections" by Robert Mugabe....

* - Yes, I know the source for the pitpass article is the Grauniad. But I'm treating it as being halfway truthful for the moment as it does seem like exactly the sort of thing Mad Max would do.

if they change the tracks stick in a few jumps and split tracks that should keep things interesting :)

I'd like to see split tracks. I had an idea a long time ago, involving the track splitting and then converging 500m or so later. The 2 tracks should be near identical. This gives the driver who is attempting to overtake another method of getting past the driver in front.

Of course, one of the tracks will be less used and therefore slower, due to less grip, however, the driver attempting to overtake will need to take this into account, if he decides to use the "other" side of the track.

You could make half the drivers use one side and the half use the others. Then they are allowed to swap sides (if needed) say 5 times in the race.

That would only lead to boring overtakes instead of outbraking into a corner just as overtaking in the pits is crap.

I still vote for less diffusers/aero, harder tyres, steel brakes and more powerful engines.

Great way to start your relationship with your new 2010 team mate.
Massa spoke to Brazilian media during a get-together in Sao Paulo on Wednesday and, during the lunch, he said he was in no doubt that Alonso had to have been aware of the plans for Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately in the Singapore event last year to try and help him win.
...
"... Alonso was part of the problem. He knew. We can not know it [but] of course he knew. [It's an] absolute certainty."
I think that Massa was simply putting into words what pretty much everybody else feels. In the unlikely event that Alonso didn't know in advance of Piquet's ceash, it is inconceivable that he didn't know pretty soon after.

That would be far too complicated and the driver would probably forget how many times he has taken each side, especially during the intensity of racing closely.

Its best to let the driver decide which track he wants to travel through.

Then as you said one side would get used less and not worth the risk of attempting. It would not work.

Just let them drive through the pit lane on full bore :D
