I don't think the rules have changed. I think an overtake that occurs that far off track is always going to be disallowed. The confusing bit is the murky area around how a driver can purposely miss a corner (or go wide on exit) and effectively use that as a form of defending.
Stewards make the decisions. They have the info. If the boot had been on the other foot, Norris fans would be jumping for joy!
Obv each others fans are going to side with their guys.
the trouble there is that the rules don't say the car has priority at the braking point, it's actuallyVery good weekend Ferrari but really can't get my head around the lando penalty.
Lando was ahead at the braking point so that then means Max is the one doing the overtake and he forces the other car off track. From Russell early on it was the inside car that got penalised.
Will need to see the pics / replay for this.Outside of a corner: Drivers must:
Have their front axle at least alongside the other car's front axle at the apex and exit of the corner
From the camera views I've seen Norris was behind at the 'apex'Will need to see the pics / replay for this.
Well, clearly that didn't happen.Inside of a corner: Drivers must:
Leave a fair width for the other car at the exit of the corner
Be able to make the corner within the track limits
But Lando gained the advantage by getting past fully, if lando had backed off and not got past then Max would have been given the 5s penalty for forcing a driver off track same as Russell and GaslyBut max also went off the track driving lando off doesn't that tell you he went in without control ?
but lando wasn't overtaking on the inside.Well, clearly that didn't happen.
Ask Hamilton what happens if you don't leave space for max....End of the day I think that falls down to Lando's naivety again for leaving the space in the first place, it's just so predictable what's going to happen that it's disappointing that he's not switched on enough to anticipate it.
Can't really blame Max too much I don't think, why not keep using the same move if nobody really knows how to enforce things with different interpretations to the rules.
No Zak is wuss. His already conceded itI just got in and caught the BBC news which showed the replay. Absolute nonsense. Any advantage gained by going “off track” should immediately be nullified if the driver on the inside also goes off. If there’s driver on the inside goes off he is either out of control or forcing you off track. End of story. Lando was robbed. All the stewards are doing is making overtakes down the outside completely unfeasible. All the guy on the inside has to do is open up the wheel a little. They’re going to make it wide open to abuse. Absolute bull**** circa Brazil ‘21
I’ll watch the highlights tomorrow for funsies, I hope Zak Brown takes the stewards to task.

I thought he was doing well what with bibgate etc. calling it “worse than cheating”. I dunno. That whole team is too soft. Should be doing much better given their cars performance.
in this respect i agree. While I disagree with the statement that Max benefited from the stewards, Max should have been given a penalty for forcing Sainz off, however after that incident the stewards were consistent in the application of the rules. George, Yuki and Pierre all got 5s for forcing a driver off because they kept their place thereby gaining an advantage, while with Max and Lando you can't apply a penalty to Max for forcing a driver off because Lando gained the advantage by overtaking, in both scenarios the rules penalise the once who gains the advantage, it's just the wording is different for the different advantage gained.Max twice benefited from the stewards, should have been penalised early on and hand the place back to Sainz
