AMD Releases Mantle Programming Guide and Reference API

AMD announced that it published the complete 450-page programming guide for its Mantle 3D graphics API, and the reference API itself. The two can be accessed from here. In the run up to its GDC 2015 presentation, in a blog post written by the company's top technology exec Raja Koduri, the company said it will talk about the future of Mantle in its GDC presentation. The company intends to develop, maintain and support Mantle and its eco-system, while maintaining that it will participate in the development and support of industry-standard APIs such as DirectX 12 and GLnext (the next major version of OpenGL).

Mantle was dead the moment they forced Microsoft to do something with DX12, to be fair Mantle played its part in forcing Microsofts hand, and if thats all its achieved its a damn site more than most others have done in all fairness.

Overall everyone benefits from Mantle now as the first API to do what its done obviously had a direct impact on Microsoft shaping up DX12, which in turn benefits everyone, as long as devs implement its features etc.

So while that Mantle ship has sailed, it done a good job of kickstarting the revolution before it set sail :)

Its a major PC development.
Nothing comes close to it from other competitiors.
 
MS and Nvidia have been prodded to get to this point of an efficient API thanks partly to AMD and now we are nearly there with W10 there is hope. Looking at 2016+ to show real progress because my word we need it. Not sure it would stop devs with bad ports and day1 patches with very poor performance. Remember the days we considered SLI/CF to offer insane performance and now we are lucky if engines support it :rolleyes:

Too many times I find assets in games are still as low textured as back in 2011 with only modders giving it the care it deserves. Nvidia loading on their proprietary tech and only supporting their latest series further impedes performance. So much has been promised with DX12 but I'm a sceptical git :p

Otherwise you can bet AMD are still working hard on Mantle 2.0 since their CPU and APU's require the capabilities and tuning offered from Mantle. I'm all for competition but Mantle can perform worse than DX on identical setups and offers the biggest gains where CPU is the bottleneck. When talking about Mantle (or not), they are being cute.
 
lol - shame really as it did make a difference! I wonder if this has anything to do with profit loss!!
 
I'm quite shocked in all honesty, I didn't expect it to ever catch on properly but I never thought it would be this short lived :O

It was rather obvious I thought... AMD were never going to keep paying developers to add support for Mantle long term and developers have enough tech support headaches supporting a single API (DX) let alone two. It made no sense outside of 'financial incentives' to support an API which is limited to only a small portion of an individual vendors GPU's. The reason NVidia get a lot of their (GameWorks) technology into games is because they send engineers out and do it for them at their own expense.
