*****Official ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA thread*****

The 550 results were using a hand picked E6850 processor (dual core). Quad core maximum FSB comes in around 450-480, depending on many factors.

I would say max benching with retail Penryn quad cores, do not expect much more than 4.4 tops for Super Pi 1M. Outright Prime type stability, probably in the region of 3.8-4GHz (realistic) with good air cooling.

Nobody knows how the chipsets will handle the 12MB cache yet. Usually each increase in cache size has reduced FSB levels, especially when you compare smaller cache processors to larger cache types.

The 400FSB strap didn't work for me with overclocking the Q9550. The 333strap was best.

Max FSB was 455 with this board and cpu but 475 with the P5K3

Also the 505 bios that you used didn't work with this Penryn chip. 401, 602 and 701 worked.

Got my FSB at 528 here, 7x multi, on 0505 bios.

Didn't realise there is newer bios revisions out. Not gonna try them atm as everything is working great. Been rock solid stable for a few weeks of intensive use. Will do me til I invest in a quad :)

I Got my board today here's a few pics of the non se :

Asus Maximus Formula SE Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

This is currently on the latest bundle offers with a Q6600. Is this a "good" board to have? I have water, so I will be pushing things...

There are issues overclocking some of the new X38 boards, it hurts me to say so (being an Abit fan) but the Maximus is the best that i've tested so far...

however ABit have already released a new bios that fixes most of their issues. :D havent had chance try that yet though...

I've just signed up for the SE as well. Will be relegating the current PC to second PC / media PC status when the lower cost Penryn Quads come out. For the moment I will be transfering the E6600 and GTX over to the SE. Gone for Vista 64 this time and 4GB Tracer Ballistic 85000 RAM thats on offer on OC at the moment.

How easy is it to remove and reseat the waterblock/ heatsink? The Anandtech article talkes about it being held on with epoxy...

Display Issues

I originally posted the below in the monitor section but after a bit more investigtaion i think it could be my board.

"I am not sure where to post this but here goes. I am currently running the spec in my signature however when I play certain games the display shakes from side to side.

It is perfectly fine within vista and say football manager 08. However if I load up the unreal tournament 3 demo, crysis demo, Company of heroes: opposing fronts or world in conflict the display starts to shake.

If I then minimise to desktop the display will keep shaking until I exit the game. I am running the catalyst 7.10 drivers.

Sorry should have said i am running vista at 1680x1050. and have tried running all games at various resolutions."

I have tried both cards, memory and the monitor connected to an abit aw9d max and tested all the same games and they run fine.

At the time of writing and using the processors I had at hand, the 0505 was the best solution (we tested non 45nm) not to mention that 45nm is not fully available yet. I am currently testing the 0702, which may be included in a follow up if deemed necessary. Later BIOS releases can always change the way the board sets up the straps and how they interact with various CPU's. The main issue with Transaction booster in the Maximus Formula is working out the PF level offsets between BIOS's, that's all the difference usually is, together with a couple of the secondary timing ranges.

Transaction Booster is a function we have urged Asus to return to logical user level control (among other improvements that should be available in this price range), rather than the offset levels (with amalgamated TRD phase register shifts) that are not really intuitive. The X48 board already features these improvements and we hope they filter down to the lower models.
