Doom 3 was a really odd game looking back on it, they tried to make it more of a survival horror kind of game instead of a balls to the wall all out fps like the previous games. Something’s they tried to make sense of like having a pda entry as to why a chainsaw would be on Mars.
Other things like the demons hiding in ‘Monster closets' in a military base triggered by you picking up a power up made less sense. May have been a throwback to the previous games but given the direction they took with Doom 3 it felt out of place and cheesy, make sense of a chainsaw but don’t make sense of why the base has hidden compartments with a fresh supply of demons inside?
All fair comments, but then Doom games have always been a little light on story
But it does make sense to see them as ambush tactics - afterall many of the demons you face are possessed humans from the armed forces and know how to lay a good trap! (and the rest are part of some uber demons army so are also technically soldiers too)
Perhaps it was an attempt to capture some of the elements of the first two Doom games and mix them into a new format? Personally I think they made D3 in a similar vein to System Shock 2 which was a good balance of survival and story. I really liked the suspense and atmosphere in D3, but agreed it wasn't really true to the originals in terms of bad guys and gameplay, but then I don't think any modern version will be simply due consolecentric design and the processing power needed to render 25 baddies, their AI and projectiles all at once at reasonable frame rate.
So Doom 3 comes out and people complain its not hectic enough like the old Doom games.
Now ID make a new Doom game that is much more hectic with lots of enemies more like the old Doom games and people are complaining its not Doom 3
I liked the originals and D3. Guess I am just a Doom fan as I started my long standing love affair with FPS games by playing Doom titles back in the day. But even the originals had a certain sense of foreboding and atmosphere that the footage of D4 seems to lack. For whatever reason I watch it and think meh. I accept that my feelings may change if I was playing it myself, though. One thing I hope, though, is that they have done away with the hand holding that is prevalent in modern games. Doom is about being alone and figuring stuff out for yourself. I hope upon hope there are not way points and objective markers in this game or if there are, I want to be able to turn them off.
I also don't like how it appears you pick up health from fallen enemies. Again, medpacks and ammo were resources to be controlled and used tactically in the original games. The footage thus far makes it look like the protagonist can take a bucket load of damage without dying and conversely the enemy AI appears pretty useless as well as them being feeble in actual attacking terms. Half the baddies that get mown down barely get a shot off, and I haven't seen any signs of bad guys having nasty melee attacks of their own either yet. I distinctly remember even on hurt me plenty, a tussle with some shotgun soldiers or imps would soon see you dead if you approached it in the wrong way.
I am happy to play a Doom game that is more busy with hordes of enemies to drop but it needs to feel like Doom, and so far this does not, not to me anyway.
TBH the genral look of the game feels more like Quake than Doom.
This. I have the exact same feeling when watching it. Feels like a bit of a hybrid, but the MP footage I have seen reminds me very much of the Q4 multiplayer from way back. Not that it looks bad, in fact I like the look of the MP more than the SP at the moment!!
For those who may not yet have tried this mod here is a complete run through of classic doom 3 mod, a remake of Doom's first set of levels (including the secret level if you know where to find it) in the D3 engine.
