**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

Found a nice random(?) encounter on a rooftop yesterday. Was two guys who looked the same, each one claiming the other to be a synth, with one holding the other at gunpoint. You have to try to break it up or make the choice. It was pretty cool, won't spoil which is which though :)

I just repeated the test a third time. This time, I did the crafting, walked a few yards to the buildings workbench like on the previous tests but I entered the crafting menu by mistake instead of the transfer menu. When I exited the crafting menu and went into the transfer menu, the cloth was there.

I think there's a delay rather than the unused materials being lost, but I don't know what triggers the unused materials being added and I don't know if they're all added if you do several craftings and partially use several different items. I need to go, so if you decided to check that please let me know so I won't have to do it myself tonight.

I just did a quick test by having the crafting menu open and going to console and doing player.additem xxxxxxx 10. The amount didn't update until I quit the crafting bench and went back to it.

Maybe when the items are being added to your inventory the exact same thing is happening? It doesn't update until you enter the crafting bench a second time?

In Sheep's clothing. Classic Bethesda botched quest.

Piper is trying to break down the door of the Mayors office. She says "there must be another way in"... So I pick the lock(I know you can open it another way) . 'Piper disliked that' sigh... Plus another message says the owners are now hostile apparently. So I enter the room and the mayor is holding his secretary hostage. I persuade him to let her go and he attacks me... And so does the Secretary because I picked the lock!

Bethesda ladies and gentlemen.

maybe the mayor is not who he seems to be ?

had same in the middle of nowhere yesterday. dunno if i made the right choice though. persuasion failed and one guy got shot. :o

Guys something I've meant to ask but kept forgetting. Can anyone explain the 'My Mods' section of the inventory? Are they mods that have been removed from a weapon and replaced, or are they schematics? Secondly, if it's the latter, if I sell them do I lose the ability to install that mod, or is it like a SPECIAL book, that once read, is just something to sell for caps?

This game is forcing to use my rank up perks to unlock things like hacking and lock picking to do missions when I want to spend them on other things.

Yeah, know the feeling. Would much rather the old levelled skills.

Wish this had been in a spoiler dude, ha. That seems like something I wish I'd just discovered myself...

Yeah I remember that one. I quick saved my game and told the guy to shoot him. lol :D

I was getting serious tanking of FPS, from 72 to mostly 22-25 but some areas down to the teens.

Did a bunch of playing around with various settings. Finally got it down to shadow distance. Every area that tanked hard, every single one, just putting shadow distance to medium flicked everything up to 72fps(144hz screen with v-sync maxing out at half).

Hit low preset because medium locks out some choices without you knowing. IE if you hit medium preset then set god rays to off in advance.... they stay on, because it's retarded. Hit low preset then anything you change in advance sticks.

I played with every freaking setting till I found that in certain areas high shadow distance was killing it. From what I've seen as well, ultra shadows look good, medium shadows look good, high looks crap. It goes really blurry and soft. Medium looks like marginally lower quality than ultra, high looks like entirely different shading style that frankly sucks.

High shadow distance my 5820k had no thread more than maybe 50% but my GPU was dropping from 90% usage to 35-40% usage and sub 25fps in certain areas.

Thanks for this, just changed shadow distance to medium and it made a massive difference! I went to an area where I was getting terrible problems yesterday and though its still dropping in places its holding at 60 a lot more. In the worst spot I could find it dropped to 48 so still not perfect, but with it set to Ultra as I had before it was dropping to 20! Also seems odd to me that my GPU is only at about 50% when this happens.

Might play around with things a little more but for now that's a huge improvement.

Also, thanks for the other tip, I was trying to switch off Godrays yesterday to see if that helped but it kept setting back to low instead, I guess because I used the Ultra preset originally, how silly.

I think when you make the mod you get whatever was originally on the weapon as a "spare". If you keep it in your inventory you can basically swap between the mods at a workstation without using resources. If you don't plan on doing that you can sell them on for caps or just store them somewhere for future use. In short it is an actual item you end up with.

Going to start again tonight, 18 hours in so far but I'd say 14 of that is purely on base building. Story wise I've hardly done anything.

Start again as in from restart the game from fresh? Why not just use bat files to reset and give you the perk points to respec your character?

Cheers. So these are what appear in the 'My Mods'? I tend not to swap between mods for occasions - I just kit out different weapons instead. Gives me more XP that way anyway. Is there a way of knowing you're using a spare mod rather than crafting one?

How long are your loading times SSD users? I'm finding them unusually long. Any other game I would be loaded in about 5 sec or less but FO4 is taking like 10-20 sec. It all adds up when playing and you find yourself spending 30 mins just watching load screens.

If I remember, Skyrim's load times increased when you started adding mods. This isn't a good sign if Fallout4 is taking this long without any additions!
I could've sworn my loads started out reasonable, but sometime after putting sweetfx in they've tanked. I removed sweetfx but it didn't help.

I'm glad you posted, I was worried my 1tb ssd was starting to fail (again). Steam has been giving me DISK WRITE ERROR during updates for things like TF2, but I'm starting to think steam is a p.o.s. if not installed on the OS partition.

Yeah I "respec-ed" my main character (through console commands) after realising a dumped so many points into perks that didn't really add enjoyment to general mission-based gameplay.

e.g. I hated how I had to have a certain level of charisma (?) to access the ability to manage trade routes between settlements. Imo that's a core component of the game I'm missing out on 'cause I didn't want to make a charisma heavy character (and since there's basically barely any skill checks, and the ones that are there are completely RNG (???))... And I'm not even too heavily invested in the whole settlement building atm and it was just more for convenience/time saving.

Anyway, I respeced my character to find my most enjoyable playstyle - a sneak/stealth melee build with high-crit chance and AP regen :D It's completely OP (just look at how far I can teleport in VATS, and that 10X damage ):

I'll go find a deathclaw or something to see how easily I can take it down :D

Would that affect your steam achievements?
I know using the console does for that session, requiring you to quit and start again to track them again.

I believe if you are crafting one it will bring up a menu confirming the amount of materials that will be used to make it and using a spare one will equip it immediately instead.

Restart the game, I've not got too much invested at the moment and I'll go a different way on the map this time.

Bat files are ok but I don't want to 10 all my special and unlock all the perks.

They really messed up skills. I hope they can be saved by mods. It is like they are desperate to remove any semblance of role-playing from the game.

I think I do agree with this point... I'm struggling a bit to care about my skills because:

A. It all seems so arbitrary, with not much in the way of choice at each level... but more importantly

B. No level cap, and you can boost SPECIAL when you level... so basically who cares what I pick because eventually I'll have 100% everything across the board

No need to plan, no need to think about anything really... no need to replay and try to go with a totally different approach. A shame
