**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

Currently plodding through Far Harbor. One question which has piqued my interest though, what does DiMA actually stand for? Seems to be an abbreviation but I can't find any reference to his/its full name or designation.

If I remember DiMA is short for Direct Memory Access. Might be wrong though.

Makes sense.

As an aside my "SS" has become evil incarnate. Having initially resolved the FH storyline peacefully, I returned to the island with the BoS (having been unable to find anyone in the Institute to tell) and dispersed summary justice to Acadia. I then made my way to switch off the wind turbine and eliminated anything left moving in FH. Finally I'm going to give the COA what they want and instigate division.

Not surprisingly, Curie left me in disgust so now teamed up with X6-88 who is actually more fun than you might think. It's what Father would want. (And who says there's no role playing in FO4...).

Has anyone had any success with making the HUD the correct scale when using an UW monitor?

I have edited the .ini file to give the game correct 3440x1440 res but the HUD elements look fat and ugly. I have used Nexus and installed widescreen fix but honestly im not sure it did anything at all!

Install flawless widescreen:

Been ages since I played fallout 4, but there where definitely separate "mods" that worked to fix the scaling of the HUD, power armour etc.

**** poor effort from Bethesda that they couldn't be bothered patching in UW support, there isn't even any built in options for adjusting gamma or brightness.

I've never understood why Bethesda seem to get a pass for the shoddy work they put out. If it were EA or Ubisoft they'd be chased up a hill and burned to death in a ruined windmill.

Yup it is confusing how bethesada don't get more hate as a lot of their work is appalling on release day and not playable for a good few months....

Still can't believe that they couldn't even get the resolution option/drop down to work properly for fallout 4 on release day :o

Thanks for the suggestions folks, will give some of these a shot. Nexus modding seems to be hit and miss for me at the moment. I used a lot of mods for skyrim and they all worked 100% but some of the Fallout ones have been a bit dodgy. Maybe my load order is out?

Thanks again.

My Fallout 4 has started crashing after a few minutes - I've just started in Nuka World but it was doing it a little beforehand.

Turned off the mods and it still did it. I don't think I installed ENB properly - or at least it didn't start playing up until I put on ENB. I really only have a handful of mods. I did try LOOT once but after one sort from then on it kept coming up with errors and I couldn't find an explanation.

Might just re-install and play vanilla.

I'm giving it a rest now after just finishing my last playthrough. As regards stability, not so much crashes here, but was encountering prolonged interval when changing scenes particularly from interior to exterior and vv. Sometimes a couple of minutes which wrecks the atmosphere. Certainly back at the start this wasn't an issue - no mods on my install but four of the DLC so the only thing I can think is the game is updating the whole world (including FH and NW) each time you open a door...

As long as you can pick it up on sale.

Sale my ass. It costs almost twice as much as the base game! Nah, I'll wait for the 'Legendary Edition' or for the DLC to become reasonably priced, in comparison to the base game.

I've been playing the game during the free weekend and I'm liking it so far. It even provides a nice option to reset stats or appearance at the end of the initial tutorial-like bit in the Vault.

But the only thing I really despise is the load times and loading screens. Admittedly, I have it installed on a WD mechanical hard drive, but even so, I've never seen such long loading times for things like fast travel. Even fast travelling from Sanctuary to Red Rocket, it's so long that it's actually faster to get there on foot. When I first hit fast travel, I thought the game froze or something. It was stuck on the completely black loading screen for a while. I remember Skyrim only did black loading screens with some mist for a few quick loading scenes. But otherwise, I miss the tooltip screens that seem to be very rare in this game. It would help make the wait for loading less unbearable.

Back to more positive notes, I'm liking the character customisation and I'm already getting the urge to use mods. Back in Skyrim, I went nuts on graphics mods to make the game look better. I thought that playing Fallout 4 on 1440p would help, but it does look dated visually and I do feel there could be more character customisation options. But then the latest post mentions a high-res texture pack? If it's 58GB, it must be pretty darn detailed! After not managing to ever get around to a third playthrough of Skyrim (there's just too much to do in that game and it's just too big), I think I know what type of build I'm going for. I already have eyed up the perks. Any recommendations on which perks to get early? I've gone for the Awareness and Gun Nut perks so far.

After all the negativity, I feel Fallout 4 is just like Skyrim in that it has it's disappointments but is overall pretty engaging and can be improved a ton with great mods.
