**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

They'll succeed in ruining the modding thing eventually. Bethesda started against Nexus as soon as Bethesda started hosting mods themselves - being a platform for mod theft, etc. So now they're bringing out paid mods deceitfully because they know that people are opposed to paid mods.

The statement that Creation Club isn't paid mods is technically (and therefore legally) true. Some of the content in Creation Club will be paid mods. Some will be DLC. So the thing as a whole is not paid mods in the same way that, for example, lager with a dash of blackcurrant isn't lager.

There's no way Bethesda is going to pass up the chance to profit from other people's work. They'll keep going at it, keep looking for ways to work around the obvious disapproval from their customers.

I can see how this would work well for large, unique mods like quests and followers but for the rest I'm not so sure. If Vivid Weathers is a paid mod licensed 3rd-party micro-DLC and True Storms is free, I know which one I'll use. Same goes for weapons, armours, textures and so on. Best case scenario as far as I see it is that the business model is designed primarily with consoles in mind, as they won't have as many free alternatives to choose from. Worst case scenario is that Bethesda will decide for their next Fallout/Elder Scrolls that the best way to make money off this would be to restrict the availability of modding tools to those in the Creators Club.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions about how this will be implemented but it does at least look like Bethesda has actually put some thought into it this time, particularly in terms of the added value they're offering to the process. (Saying that, the idea of my favourite mods benefiting from Bethesda's trademark 'polish' and QA is...disconcerting). How they decide what is original, how much modders will get paid, how the relationship between modders and Bethesda will work, how and to what extent they'll guarantee compatibility, how free and paid-for content will play together etc remains to be seen. The one thing I know is that I have very little confidence in Bethesda's ability and willingness to do it properly.

I'll just Ctrl + V what I said on another way back when they tried this first time, and little in the second announcement changes it for me.

Not against people getting paid for their work, but my expectations change according when it goes from being a freebie mod to paid DLC and frankly it's going to need to be something special to overcome that hurdle for me.

With free mods I accept that my game might get hosed by a sloppy scripting error, that there's going to be incompatibilities and I'm the one who has to jump through hoops to make it play nice with other content, and that the makers aren't always 100% professional.

The second you charge for your DLC (and yes it's now DLC not a mod imo) I expect the same from you I'd expect from any dev, incompatibility? You make the patch to fix it and fast. ****ed up script borking people's saves 24 hours in? You better damn well fix it fast and help "I'm trying to fix it but real life is hectic and I don't know when I'll get around to it" doesn't cut it anymore, nor does acting like a little ***** in the comments section with anyone who isn't 100% behind you.

Now some of that might be a smaller issue because of this alleged QA but that sounds to me more like they're going to keep the mods small and clean.

Skyrim & Fallout have matured modding communities built on the top of each others works that by and large help each other. My bigger worry now is when the next game comes out there won't be that kind of community because everybody will be looking at it as "if I can do something they can't, I can be the one to make the money", sure they'll be people who will always wants to mod for free but many more will see the dangling carrot and you'll have a toxic, insular mod scene.

I'm totally against paid mods... Especially the way they tried to implement it last time, butI like the look of this Creators Club tbh.

I'm pretty sure all of the usual types of mods you get now will still be available as they are, but this will be useful for new story/quest content, and add a bit of quality.

I'm OK with it.

Vivid won't be as its new content only. Existing mods can't be put behind a paywall. I guess there could be Vivid 2.0 or something... but otherwise not going to happen. They also have to get accepted by Bethesda as in-house creators and I can only see a select few doing that.

Also I can't see them restricting tools how is anyone going to learn in the first place?

I'm ok with it so long as its DLC sized content. Be looking forward to it infact. If its heaps of shiny weapons and armours for $5 each when there are plenty of free ones already... I won't be bothering.

Might work for you. Might not. Not supported, not recommended...but it does shut up Preston.

Having started yet another FO4 game (something about this makes it very addictive particularly in the early stages) I once again just decided to walk past Preston in the museum, grab the bobblehead and head out on the roof for the minigun and power armour. Yes you miss out on a few missions and never get artillery, but TBH once you locate an explosive shotgun or similar that tends to have the same effect! I'm calling this my "Hostile Takeover" playthrough, the intention being to take over all settlements friendly or otherwise by lethal means* and bring in my own settlers, not bound to the minutemen. It's quite gratifying at Abernathy Farm, when Blake whines, "We're eeermed here", to shot him in the face with the minigun when he pulls out a pipe pistol. Again, I know you miss out on a couple of side missions doing it this way (locket retrieval in the case of Abernathy) but this is roleplay from a different tack to the conventional path through the game.

Trying to get to Level 50 before progressing the main story and DLC - my last run got to L72 in total. This time I'm using primarily melee but with non automatic weapons as a secondary, I also want to push my lockpick and hacking as the former makes certain parts of Nuka World easier if not travelling with Cait.

God I love this game!

* Exception being the robots at Graygarden, at least until I clear the waterworks.

Oooh I'd not thought of just ignoring him completely at the start, I'm about to start my first play through as the woman so will do just that.

Yes if you walk past him and his cronies you get a snide comment, but otherwise when you're ready to proc the main campaign later just find your way to Diamond City, speak with Piper and the mayor to get the Nick Valentine thread and the whole Minuteman farce can be avoided. I think it probably also means you can't get Codsworth as a companion because that relies on reporting that you've spoken to Garvey. You also end up with the mission stuck in your Quest list forever (though there might be a mod to kill it, never really checked).

I'm also doing the female lead this time... scary. :)

On a different note, I've started to dabble around with some lightweight mods and some are quite interesting (greener Commonwealth) and some more trouble than they are worth (Scrap Everything). Additional/enhanced weapons so, so the problem being that you need to craft ammo for them or special parts to make legendary effects.

I'm working from the official Bethesda list so wondered can anyone recommend a mod that, 1. Changes the FOV to 90 in order to reduce the eyestrain FO4 sometimes induces, or sharper/brighter nights. 2. A mod to craft all ammo by breaking down existing shells etc., 3. A decent scrapping mod for settlement clearance that's not likely to bork the rest of the game? These need to be on the official site as mentioned.

After getting one-shotted (several times) by some scumbag raider while trying to take Dead Man's Alley, I went back to Sanctuary in a huff and picked up one of my Fat Men, some mini nukes and dusted off some power armour. Tomorrow will be a bad day for them.

Always one for the mods, I'm currently trying two new companion mods and Sim Settlements. The latter is excellent, but these companions do seem to be fall in to that trap of being overly verbose.

Easiest way to deal with the FOV would be in the ini files. I set mine to 95 95 as even 90 seems a bit cramped.

I think all the scrapping mods tend to be 'serious business', but Scrap Everything seems to be behaving itself in my latest play-through. I couldn't play without a scrapping mod though, so I just have to put up with any potential grief.

The problem I found with "Scrap Everything" is that it seemed to be generating generic components (and fewer of them) from items that were already scrapable in vanilla. I think it's one to switch on and off as required, i.e. during final stages of sorting out a settlement.

About to play around with the FOV now, see if it's easier on the eyes.

So I got as far as Mass Fusion (and the BOS quests for building Lib Prime) and stopped as I didn't want to fall out with anyone and went off to do Far Harbour and Nuka World. Nuka World is making me choose and turn on factions so decided to go back and complete the main quests.

I helped build Lib Prime which led me to a quest which makes Railroad hostile but I didn't complete that mission.

I then went and completed Mass Fusion which made BOS hostile (felt bad completing Mass Fusion) - so it looks like I've thrown in my lot with the institute - and now I'm trying not to have Minutemen turn on me too. This seems achievable so I end up being mates with institute and minutemen but enemies with BOS and Railroad.

To be fair, not entirely sure that's how I want to play it out. I've kinda of gone for the least worst option IMO. I'm thinking could I have got this far and only fallen out with BOS? Not that bothered about Railroad but quite like being matey with as many factions as possible.

I know I had to pick sides but that's one reason why Nuka World put me off - seems like I don't pick a side, the sides pick me or else - Overboss FTW :)

I know I'm way behind others with many a play through but I doubt I'd play through again. I can just squeeze 3/4 hours a week gaming and have lots of other games I've never touched.

It's a bit of cool story, bro. but it's little moments like the following that keep me playing this game.

I was spending some time decorating my home in Sanctuary with some nice new modded goodies and noted that a rad storm (courtesy of True Storms) had kicked off. Of course I was busy admiring my new fireplace and considering which new painting to hang on the living room wall and hadn't considered either the chance of a Ghoul Horde appearing, or Sanctuary's less than stellar defence's... So imagine not only my surprise when a ghoul comes charging in to my recently rebuilt kitchen, but then the horror of hearing that a settler had found one of my fat man launchers in the workshop and was in the process of giving me the good news of their discovery!

Nuked in my own living room. I can only imagine how that looked from the other side of the road. :D

Help out a Fallout scrub, I'm a HUGE ESO fan, and the games as well, but never got on with Fallout. I've put about 11 hours into Fallout 4 since I bought it on release, over several attempts to play it. Can someone give me a quick lowdown on how to take my knowledge of how the games work in the ESO series and apply it in F4? I want to like it, but I've just no idea where to go and what to do really...

I want to create a character based on perception, agility, charisma and intellect. Which I've done, with the latter being the highest stat. I want to use snipers mostly and stealth as my main way of approaching fights. I like being able to convince people in chat and having 'speech' skill.

The ninja and Mr Sandman perks are pretty much a given if you want to be a sniper particularly with silenced rifles, use of VATS is also a must as bullets pretty much just bounce off enemies early on until you can grab a legendary rifle with wounding or explosive properties.
