***Official Final Fantasy XIV Thead***

Hi all, Im new to the forum and just splashed out £1200 on a new gaming rig to play this game. Im hoping im not going to regret that decision given the negative comments about the game im reading here. Lets hope in the few days they have before the release they manage to iron some of this stuff out!!

Sounds like this is pretty much the same as FFXI then? I would have thought they would have optimised it better etc and changed the gameplay to be a bit more casual friendly.

how do you use abilities like Gulleye? the tutorial keeps telling me to use certain abilities that i dont seem to have?

Ok, this is really annoying when you start a quest and it doesnt tell you that you need certain items to do the quest, like a fishing rod... it doesnt even tell you where to get them either.... help me out :(

so far ive got to say the game is really messy in terms of questing, there doesnt seem to be any storyline, like do quests in area 1, move to area 2, area 3... I got "Guild Leves" from the Adventurers Guild - are there other places?

All in all i really dont know wtf im doing yet lol, and items arent really well marked as in what they do :-/ i have all these elemental things and i dont know what to do with them

Press Home to bring the main menu up along the right hand side.
Select Abilities.

Click in spare hot bar space on the lft. From drop down menu choose the class you have started as. Click on the ability you want equipped in that hot bar slot.

Yes it's dumb that new skills don't auto equip for you when you are a new player.

It's got a new type of class system.

You change class simply by changing what weapon/trade skill tool is equipped in your main hand. If you equip a bow you change class to Archer. If you equip a Sword you become a Gladiator and if you equip a two hand axe you become a Marauder.

Trade skills, including Fisherman or Botanist (collecting herbs etc), Armorsmith or Culinarian, are also part of this system. To change to a Fisher you equip a fishing rod.

The interesting part is once you level a class and earn skills from it you can use those skills when you chance class. So you can go Mage and learn some healing or damage spells, then change to a melee and equip the healing or damage spells you have learned.

You can create totally unique classes using a cross section of the abilities you have learned.

This isn't WoW where the game will lead you from quest giver to quest giver and wipe your arse for you, they have said they want as much unknown as possible about the game at release, so people explore and learn for themselves. This isn't for everyone

I like the game itself Flight, I only started yesterday so I know its going to take a day or so to get used to it ;)

I'm not going to give up, I have already pre-ordered the collectors edition...

I guess I was just too used to the whole WOW wiping ass thing :p

They could at least give you some idea of who does what, like were to go to buy certain items, who to talk to for quests as leaving it for people to explore is somewhat annoying, im 1 of those ppl who likes to get all quests in 1 area then procced out and do them, so i dont have to keep running back and forth

Whats doing my head in atm is the program crashes. Already have 3 leves on cool down because of them. Now I cant get in to character choice because of them.

I know its beta but there a lot of worries for being out in a few weeks.

The small areas concern me the most atm.

Oh please, it's not asking much to expect it to tell you which item you'll need before starting a quest, especially when it locks you out of it if you fail or go out of a specific range.

A lot of design choices in this game are just poor.

What program do you use to make the PS3 controller work?
Motionjoy

I'v been playing with a 360 pad feels more natural than using keyboard and mouse once it's set up, though there doesn't seem to be an option to bind 'Use Item' window.. i'm hoping there's a way to put food etc on your bar.

expect it to tell you which item you'll need before starting a quest

I think on the quest info screen thing it tell's you the 'recommended class' or something along those lines, quests for craft/gather it should really say 'required class' though...

Anyone else having problems connecting to the lobby server? :(

I do not think its too much to ask that shops are labeled for what they sell or what you will need to acheive something.

If you wanted to build a table and asked someone to go get the bits you needed.. you would tell them where and what :p

Is the mouse not working a hardcore element of the game as well?
