***** Official Football Manager 13 Thread *****

Sometimes I have, sometimes I haven't. I have really tried various ways, and generally it hasn't worked well.

I am trying a steady approach in the game I have just started, quite a standard formation, 4-4-1-1 (Like Gerrard & Torres used to be) with all the instructions as standard for now. As the season goes on, I may adjust slightly. Trying to really focus on the man management part, morale must be HIGH!

You can't control your own clubs financing via media deals , sponsorship , stadium adverts etc ?
The only way to upgrade the stadium is to ask the board?

uninstalled.
seems football games 10 years ago were more advanced

I started up a game with Liverpool to see what it's like and quit instantly lol. My jaw actually dropped when I saw the amount of crap in the reserves team, I'd clear that out straight away! Definitely invest heavily in the defense, they only have one left back (who is pretty average) along with a decent holding mid or ballwinner.

Also the staff would take me literally hours to go through, I'm used to playing smaller clubs and building them up so I don't have the motivation to sort them out at all. Why not try taking a lower league team? So much more fun and rewarding.

My first and current game is a Liverpool one. In the first season I finished 4th.

In the second season I paid a few million for a hot prospect 17 year old and bought Strootman. So far I'm 1st in the PL (won 9 drawn 1) and doing poor in the UCL (lost 1 drawn 2 I think).

The team is normally (bracketed players are subs/cover):
Borini Saurez
(Sturridge) (Carroll)

Gerrard
(Countinho)

Strootman Lusas Allen
(Spearing) (Henderson)

Enrique Agger Coates Johnson
(Robinson) (Skrtel) (Kelly)

Reina
(Jones)

Still leaves me:
Suso
Sterling
Downing
Shelvey
Assaidi

Fabrice Olinga is the hot prospect I bought.

I have done quite a few games from lower leagues, and done well in them. As I mentioned before, being a Pool fan, I want to get a good game running with them as I have failed to do so with this patch. The squad really does not seem to represent how good / bad some of the players are in real life.

So you are playing a 4-3-1-2? With the midfield in the centre of the pitch or as defensive midfielders? Also, what roles have you given to the players?

Just hoping a bit of advice could go a long way for me. I am currently playing a 4-4-1-1, and am doing, reasonably, but keep shipping the odd goal here and there to draw a game instead of picking up the 3 points that I have quite frankly deserved through the complete domination of each game.

Yep, 4-3-1-2 (depending on injuries/availability). The three midfielders are on the centre line, with Gerrard (or replacement) ahead and then the 2 strikers up as far as possible. Sometimes I may play Lucas behind and have 4-1-2-1-2. :p My gameplay is set to "Attacking".

The star players from the first season were Coates, Allen, Gerrard (when fit).

This season Borini has played 10 games so far I think (4 as sub) and scored 10 goals, Gerrard has scored 7 I think and Saurez 4. Him and Saurez seem a good combo.

It does look a bit "middle" on paper but Enrique appears to go nuts down the left running with the ball and someone gets on the end of it.

Roles are:
Enrique and Johnson (WB - attack)
Agger and Coates (CD - defend)
3 midfielders (CM - automatic)
Gerrard (AM - support)
Borini (Deep Lying Forward - attack)
Saurez (Complete forward - attack)

If my team are fairly crocked and I need to use Downing etc I will play 4-4-2 with Downing/Assaidi further up on the side with Lucas/Strootman/Henderson in the middle (2 of the 3 obviously).

Just rejigged my formation to one like that, as the one I was playing was familiar so the players are reasonably astute with it.

5-1 against West Brom!

I love you Andrew! lol

Bah, my results are still fluctuating, won another game 5-0, now some draws and losses too. Going to revert to my more sturdy original formation until I get the confidence up.

Keep with it Spangles - try and focus on one tactic and stick to it regardless of wins or losses. If you lose try to see where you are losing - is it a particular player? The more you chop and change the less likely you are to produce consistant results. But it's crappy when you keep losing. If you go through a series of losses, rotate the players BUT do team talks and try and get their morale up. This is very important for consistancy I am finding.

Liverpool *should* be good in time - but you might need at least 3 seasons to reap the rewards. Be patient, just don't get sacked or relegated :D

What do you guys do with your youth? I am having more luck finding 15/16 year olds but they are obviously not ready for the first team. I find that if I keep them at my club and train them they will improve quite rapidly - equally if i send them out on loan as KEY players they will get lots of first team experience BUT they will not train as quickly. So what are you best doing?

I wondered this... I'm never sure if it is better to loan out or train!
I guess in real life they'd be more likely to train until around 18/19/20, then loan for a season, then easing in to first team.

Depends on teh individual I guess and how close to being ready for the first team they are.

So, a little update. I got sacked at the start of January. Was 10th, but in a group where a win would have put me 6th, so wasn't doing to badly.

Started a new game as Eastbourne Boro. Never got them to far so am hoping I can have a good game with them. Nice to have a team who actually take on board your team talks!

That's really pants, sorry mate. Some boards expect constant wins and anything less than that equals utter failure. I have been in that position myself and it's frustrating when you put so much effort into finding staff and the best players. That's why I prefer the smaller teams although you need to invest a LOT of time and patience in them. It is possible to get them right up to the top. I managed to get a lowly second division team into the Premiership and win the CL and various cups and get a nice £40 million budget for transfers, plus massive expansions. But it took about 15 seasons. I tried with a Blue Square team but I resigned after I was given 0 budget even after winning promotion.

Well, I have played about 4 or 5 games, won all but 1 of them so far.

Quite happy with that. Got a great keeper on a free by the name of Ranieri, think he was at Spurs, but was at the youth trials.

Also got a strike who has some decent stats for this level. If I can keep it up at this rate, should achieve promotion. Only problem is, only 1 team gets automatic promotion, then there is a playoff for the remaining one, as it is the Blue Square South :( So got to make sure not to have a blip at any stage.

The transfer budget is a whopping £5,000

The wage budget is £4,445

I am currently over the wage budget, as I had to sign the keeper as they do not start with a keeper. Also the striker I signed was essential purely because of his stats eclipsing the other strikers at the club.

We are doing alright so far, it only takes a good few wins in the cup to get enough money in to cover the wages for the year!

hehe, that transfer budget is more than I get at Kilmarnock in the SPL! I do have a £17k wage budget however. But fancy not starting with a keeper - how bizarre! :D

I know!?!

I offered some of the generated grey players who were keepers a contract, and they accepted. I thought to myself that it would be an area I need to strengthen.

Then up popped this chap on the trials day, and I thought SIGN HIM UP!

He is doing quite well so far, is probably a league 2 keeper rather than down here, but if I can progress quickly, I should be able to keep hold of him.

This is the chap in question.

Oh right. You do realise that you don't need to sign players at that level unless you want to keep them. This way you can play a team without any expensive contracts and you are free to ditch whenver you want. It also means you can get free transfers throughout the season rather than just twice a year.

To an extent, yes. The thing is though they do have a lot less training time, and because their stats were so poor, they needed some time on the training ground.

This guy should be great though, would sign him up til 2020 :D
