This is FM, you will concede an own goal in injury time in the 30th game :p

Been back on my Cambridge game lately, still stuck in the championship! About to loose my 3rd homegrown star  board built a £24m new stadium now I can't even match contract renewals, can only offer about 80% of what they're on it's so frustrating. I don't want to leave because I got them up from BSP but if I lose my best striker (21yo, had him since 16 I think) who scores 25+ goals every season i'm out.

Have you tried asking him if he will lower his wage demands? Do you or does your DOF sort out the contract renewals?

I'm starting a new game for each one mind.

I'm gonna cheat a bit for the 20 years one. i think it will take like 10 years to get English hero, then holiday bit by bit and make it to 20 years.

How am i going to do 30 games without conceding?!?! Might try with Rangers.

Ahhh, you know you can do English hero in 6 ;) (well I did that, with a lot of luck and squealing at the computer at each lucky promotion beyond L2)

I would like to think Rangers is just cheating on this FM :p but they would be ideal for a 4 season run to do the Scottish hero and the 30 games without conceding!

Oh and for the fun of it I took over Cafc at lunch time (having a lot to do and all at the moment), turns out they have no money and I have to release everyone to reshape the squad to get out of the BSP, going to be a fun season!! :D

It's greyed out at the moment but I'm planning to. I do it all myself I don't have a DOF. Already asked to increase wage budget but still can't even match what he's on now. I occasionally get job offers from the likes of Wigan, West Brom, Southampton etc so I'm tempted to take the next one and buy him there. I think the £24m loan says it will take 12-15 years to pay off

It's reassuring to see that legacies are being fulfilled by computer-managed teams. My Stockport team whom I left after winning a couple of EPLs have gone on to win three further titles on the trot before finishing second to Chelsea last season. Also, having left Brentford at the top end of the table (finishing 3rd at the peak) they haven't been out of the top ten in the last twelve seasons since I managed there.

I finished 6th in the Prem with Crewe in my first season in the league. Annoyingly 6th wasn't enough to get into Europe  Also my leading midfielder, who finished the season top of the assists league with 22, didn't do enough to even get in the preliminary 30 man world cup squad for England.

Phil, that young English striker you posted a couple of pages back looks like he'll be incredible! If only FM allowed transfers between saves! :)

If you can afford a good one, a DOF is a good purchase. Reason being they will usually get better contract renewals than you can. For example, I couldn't get one of my best strikers to accept anything like the contract I wanted, and as soon as I hired a DOF he sorted it within days. It doesn't always work out for the best, but it usually does. One thing I dislike is the way the DOF will always renew contracts regardless of your preference. You need to tell them that the player is unwanted if you want a contract to cease. But that can be a job in its own right.

Yes, that's a surprising aspect of the game in my opinion. The AI is remarkably adept.

Rory Duff? Yes, he's good, or will be in a season or two. I'm using him in a rotation role at the mo. but I have two other young guns who are even better! A German poacher who I spotted a few seasons back, Kleine. He is now world class and only 21. I also bought a 6ft 9 striker from Tottenham for £41 million. He's pretty good too :D

Oh right, I'll give that a go then! What stats are best?

Well it depends on your budget. Ask for staff wages to be increased for management and DOF roles asap!

Best stats for a quality DOF:

Judging ability/potential
Man Management
Motivation
Determination
Working with Youngsters if you want them to deal with the youth team too.
Adaptability if he's foreign and settles the troops.

These are the youth/young players I'm pinning my hopes on:

Left Winger who has actually come through the standard Crewe academy.

Striker who I reckon will turn into a World Class striker. He has similar attributes to another player when he was young (pic of current attributes in spoiler) who is pretty excellent across almost all attribute classes .

Tall centre back. Had a 3-4 month injury this season which stunted his development, but I reckon given a few years and he'll be awesome. Pretty tall too.

A centre back I picked up cheap last season. Excellent first season stats and I reckon he'll be amazing in season to come. Pretty tall too!

The Crewe academy is amazing - they've rated it a lot better in the game than it is in real life. But it produces a strong line of decent of English players whom can be easily picked as my homegrown players in my squad. On top of those tall players, I've got a 6'6" defender joining on a free and also a 6'9" striker! :p

Wowsers you have some serious talent there. I've not been that lucky at all with youth considering the position I am in - and still cannot find any 5 star potentials. So for you to have all those HG potentials is remarkable. I am wondering though if it's because my team is the richest and most reputable in the world now, so any 5 star dudes would have to be extremely good, and probably very rare.

Put another way, the best Barca player is only 4 star at present, and I have some 4.5's so I reckon I am in good company.

Only the winger is a genuine youth product. The other English players I snap up on the day they're generated before they've signed their first contract. Good players normally cost about £1m.

6 promotions in 6 seasons? Looks tough :p

yeah, I will try that.

How do you do this? Do you manually check the best English teams the day they are generated or what? I've tried sending scouts out the day AFTER the generation dates and I haven't been able to find a thing! Very frustrating.

Manually do it. Regeneration day in England is on or around the 12 March - you'll obviously know exactly when it is as you get your own intake of youth players.

Just scroll through all the decent clubs - normally these are all Premiership clubs, plus a few others with good youth setups (Middlesboro, Sunderland, Crewe, etc.). Select the main squad page, then unclick the Senior Squad box on the left in the filters section and then tick the U18s. Don't do this page scrolling between the U18s team pages as this will then track by U18 leagues (i.e. some of the teams are populated by both Prem and L1 clubs).

Then arrange by age, and you should have a range from 15 through to 18. Any player who is either 15 or 16 will be a newly generated player (some 16 year olds will be from the previous years intake and may already have agreed a contract). Look for players that are worth £30k upwards. The best are realistically from £75k upwards. As this is their first day in the game some will have been offered contracts, but it doesn't stop you from doing so. Also, if you've got a decent scouting network you'll be able to see their current/potential ability stars without needing to scout them (if they're at a team in your division).

I normally save £3-4m in transfer/wage budget after the January transfer window in order to snap up the better players each year. Sometimes I'll only take one player, as it can sometimes upset the cart a little if only you have all the decent youth players!

PS - it won't take longer than a couple of mins to quickly scan through the teams. If you have a look at all the regen days for the different countries, you can build yourself a nice little U18 squad.

Race you! Though charlton have the first year done and are in the bsp... And have 16k a week as a total wage budget, aka no money

My approach - not that it's worth much! - would be to wait until just before the end of the free transfer window/beginning of the January transfer window and then do an extensive search of the youth players let go by the German, French and Spanish sides the previous season. The should have reduced their wage demands after a few months unemployed and some should have decent PA. Also have a look at the Danish youth teams as there's normally a couple of freebies lurking around too.

I've let everyone (bar the captain) go who's on any money really, hung on to the good academy prospects and I'm gong to spend an hour this morning finding some squad players to get out of the conference fast!

Youth will come jan/in the future ;) now is all about a good solid start and getting to the champ asap

The DOF worked for 1 of my players that I couldn't renew Phil, but the main one still hasn't been renewed :( He just got his first England call up, scored 11 in 12 starts so far and stats starting to rocket now looks like I missed the opportunity to tie him down.

I do have this 19yo as backup though, looks like he will be a decent TM. If I take another job at Christmas I will be buying them I think.
