******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

I absolutely adore the game and I'm not even a football supporter. I love working my way up from the lowest leagues as it allows you to completely redevelop the club from the ground up. I stated as unemployed, got a job with Dover and have now progressed to the Champs. I am currently in first position and at this rate I will gain promotion into the BPL. All this with a 6,000 seater stadium and paltry income. I've managed to get some absolutely cracking free transfers. I sold one of them this season for £2 million.

I can't wait to get into the top tier though, with all that cash at my disposal.

The board have kept on increasing the size of my stadium at Real Madrid up to 98000 or so. Really want them to expand over 100k or a new stadium, but would prefer to stay at Santiago Bernabeu.

No idea... If it helps, in january the board decided to throw an additional £83m into my transfer kitty (without me asking) to make it up to a round £300m

LOL!!! Oh wow. I don't think I've ever seen so much money in a transfer budget. I've just been given £11 million for getting Dover into the Premier League.

Has anybody ever bought a pup? I got my hands on a striker whom had a lot of potential. Not world class, but probably not far off. I got him on a free transfer from Lille aged 22. He was absolutely dire. Not accident prone or anything like that, but just really under performed and I've no idea why. On paper, he was brilliant, with high composure and anticipation. But he couldn't find the net and as a result my board and the fans were unhappy pretty much all of the time. He was a first team player and quite important for me, so it was disappointing. I've never really experienced such an inconsistent performance. The most goals he scored was 11 in one season, with a lot of playing time. But that's just not good enough in the top tier. I ended up selling him on for £8.5 million and a 50% of next sale, so I've done really well out of it financially, but now I'm having to use second rate strikers. Funnily enough, Barca bought him and he's now worth £28 million! He has also scored in his first match lol! How weird.

Perhaps he just didn't fit into your style?

There are plenty of hidden attributes too (consistency, dirtiness, important matches, injury proneness and versatility), so while he might have looked good, his may have been sorely lacking in consistency and important matches.

I remember back in the Champ Man days there was a beast of a striker who's name I forget (I'm thinking he was at Derby?), but he had plenty of 20s across many of the important attributes, but on the couple of occasions I bought him I could never get him firing.

What's the best way to get good young players coming through the youth system?

You need a good junior coaching budget and great facilities. If you check your info on the club it will tell you what level you are at. You need a level 1 youth category to be given the best chance of landing a quality youngling. You'll find only the best teams with the biggest budgets will have the best youth facilities. Sort of goes hand in hand.

Well, possibly. But I did have a look at his hidden attributes and they were all quite good. He was 18/20 consistency which is very impressive. I must admit I didn't check pressure or important matches though. Maybe it was as simple as that.

Catchment area also has an effect, even in FM. If you're competing with a lot of teams in the same area for youth, then they can get diluted quite easily, though if you're the only club with a large area to pick the talent from, you're more likely to see a promising youngster come through the ranks, though it's rare to see a true gem.

How many seasons have you had him? I had a similar sounding player who just could not find the net in the first season, but the following year he was incredible after I played him in all preseason games

I had him for 3 seasons more or less and really gave him a chance. First season was just getting him acquainted with the club and how I play, he scored a few goals so I thought he would dramatically improve. Second season was dire, and third season I decided to sell. But I've done well out of him financially which is something. It has allowed me to purchase a new striker for £45 million. This guy looks amazing - world class potential and already looking good for his 23 years. He's played 15 games for Auxerre and has scored 13.

Nice one, I'm managing Preston and just been promoted to the championship. Getting abit ahead of myself and planning for life in the prem lol but it's so hard to sign anyone with a decent name with wages ect. So looking to try get a good youth set up.

Mid season update with Portsmouth.

As you can see, its all good now, but it wasn't always good. I managed to beat Leeds to qualify for the 4th round of the FA Cup.

I managed to sell some players in the January transfer window, whilst sending some fringe players out on loan. I need to try and balance the books. Getting a lot of loans really.

I lost one player on a free. He will leave to Motherwell, or something similar. He is 3.5* with a 4.5* potential. Forgot to renew his contract, and as soon as I offered him a contract, some good Scottish teams jumped on him. Jed Wallis his name is. So bummed I'm losing him, cause I could have made some good money off him. His stats were ok, but I hope to get better players. I assume only like 3-6 players will remain in my team next season. They are not very good (what can you expect lol) but I really feel I can find better. I'll probably get caught out and not have a decent team but we will see. Need to get promoted this year 100% Hopefully even win the St. Johnston Paint Trophy (in the 'first' final).

That's a good start - what transfer budget/wage do you have with Portsmouth? Try and get them into the Premier League :-) I'm doing very well as Dover. Just won the Champions League for the first time  I beat a team called Man U in the final.

It is a bit annoying how unrealistic the game is every now and again, I mean Man U in the champions league.........come on.

It gets a bit better!!!

Surprisingly, very good considering. I had 0 transfer budget and 0 wage budget to work with at first. I asked the board for more and they gave me 1mill transfer budget and some 10k wage to work with (good considering I my max wage is 1800p/w. I also asked for an increase in the facilities. They accepted to improve the training facilities, youth facilities, and recruitment network (grand total of 8 million!!!!!!!).

Another mexican beast coming through. Look at him!!! Just completed transfer for £60m. Will go through in the next transfer window. By scout/assistant reports, he's better than Isco !

Romero

Isco

Isco's out with hamstring for 2-3 months though. I'll get Romero in 3 months -.-
