******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

I agree that the tweet doesn't prevent a normal release date but why the very late announcement in October? I guess we'll find out in October! :p

It might be down to something as simple as a licensing deal restricting dates or yet to be agreed. Or maybe their Mirror deal expired (where stuff was officially shown in the past. I don't recall it last year though, just Miles linking to Youtube)?

Who knows? It's just Miles' personal account, and while he's posted all of the juicy info on there in the past, he's just responding to a tweet - frankly it's rare for a company to admit a product exists at all before the NDA expires! Plenty of time for him to start giving peaks yet.

I don't recall the Mirror deal the year before either but that might be wrong. Since FM is largely done through Steam, there's not much need for a deal with the Mirror as ultimately the demo could be downloaded from their site, couldn't it?

Indeed. The only thing about SI/FM is that SI have repeatedly said that their financial model requires them to release a new FM each year. They can't take a year off in between releases. So we know it's coming. We just don't know why the announcement appears to be so much later this year.

They had an exclusive features agreement too, but with the rise of social media, it made it largely irrelevant I guess.

I don't believe that at all personally. They've been known to top the sale charts for months on end. Less common now with the Christmas releases of meganame console titles, but they must still have staggering sales figures. Of course Sega will take a decent slice of that (Miles and co being employees of Sega), and licenses will need paying for, but then SI don't need to come up with huge CGI cut-scenes and Hollywood-rivalling features.

I think they like to live on the theme of a community-centric game, and that allows people to believe they aren't a massive development house. I think their structure (the SI top brass being very active in the development) plays a part of that too.

Exactly. That and what newspaper or any other partner has a network that can get anywhere near Steam?

Yep. SI is owned by Sega now and whilst that was a few years ago, around 2010 I think, I do remember reading something about their financial situation still requiring a yearly release. And apart from the advantages of a massive distribution network like Steam making it easier to release patches to people all at the same time, Steam should make it a lot harder, if not near impossible, to pirate FM. SI have often said that if everyone who played FM actually paid for it, there wouldn't be a situation where a yearly release of FM was needed to generate income for SI.

What grates with me a bit about the yearly release is that after the last patch each year (the 3rd?), you've no chance of acknowledged bugs being fixed. You have to cough up again, at which point you get a new version with some different bugs.

Yeah, that is quite annoying. You can report bugs in the relevant sub-forum at SI's forums and fair play to their staff, they do reply so you know they are aware of it and have recorded the problem. The issue is that quite often it seems that they just bung it on a to-do list for the next release and then it's a case of how important and prevalent the bug is that determines whether or not SI assign development time to fix it for the next release.

Will anyone be buying Fm15? I'll be sticking with Fm14 for another year; don't want to lose my career and have to start all over again
Unless there's a big reason not to, i.e. the reason for the delay shows all is not well with FM15 and it'd be better to wait for FM16, then yes I will. Nothing to stop you having both versions of FM installed. ;)

Indeed. The researchers need to get the data for their clubs and then check it over I guess. This then needs to be passed onto SI who will then check it themselves before testing it and looking for any bugs. Any competition changes in any league/cup/competition needs to be updated.

I wonder if the announcement from the Premier League that the vanishing spray will be used is something that SI will need time to get the animations made, tested and debugged?

Having worked a long time ago as tester back when they switched to Football Manager it's lot more simple then that process they have many researchers and they take the data provided no verifying or editing the researchers are trusted and will discus if they do not agree on these things.

Competitions each year it's only few rule updates not much else (some names will be edited but remember a fair amount of big ones they don't have real names).

The spray thing I don't see them adding that because it's not really needed plus other countries have been using it for years so it could have been added ages ago and just appear in curtain leagues.

But will that not in itself take time? The data has got to be collated by researchers, sent to SI Towers and put into the game database. Then, if as you say they don't agree on the data, discussing it will also take some time.

I can only hope it's several million times better than our very own football forum. :p

No people and SI will try to make out it's difficult it's not they already have a database from following year which they just edit so a lot of data entry as such but it's the bugs in database that is time consuming.

Researchers can be volunteers plus paid ones but you have them assigned to different things which they will cover mostly the area they know best they will only discuss if say one researcher covers Liverpool and another Ajax then a player transfers between those two clubs if you see what I am getting at the other researcher will know more about that player.

I can't wait till FM15.
I'm done with 14 now to be honest.

I'm hoping Boro keep working at the signings, as potentially FM15 could be very exciting to play as Middlesbrough.

Finally won the Champions League after losing in the final 3 times in a row all to Bayern Munich. Absolute cruised to the title as no other teams could get any consistency. Interestingly Athletico Madrid have taken their 2nd consecutive La Liga and some how Hoffenhiem managed to win the Bundesligie

I'm in 2021 with Cardiff and I still haven't won the Champion's League :( This year I beat AC Milan 8-1 on aggregate in the quarters then went out in the semi-final to...Stoke :o

I am at least finally in a position where I can resist bids for my top players. A couple of seasons ago I sold Ewandro and Mats Moeller Daehli for a total of around £75m. I had grown so attached to them that I didn't play the game for a month after that, even though I got Barkley and a great regen striker in to replace them.

PSG just offered me £61m up front for the striker, but he's going nowhere :D

God damn, those transfer figures are pretty impressive eh. £61m for a striker..

Man City offer me £70+ million every year for my top scorer for some reason, pretty sure I nearly had a £90 million offer as well one year.

I'm in 2028 and my only real target now is an unbeaten season, which is proving very tough, for some reason my team just hate playing Man United!
