***Official Formula One 2011 Thread***

Haven't played much more of this, certainly not online.

Might come back to it in a little while and will continue with the coop season, but got tired of people shouting "no assists" all the time, especially after I found out that most of the top drivers use engine braking to get the top times . Imo that is equal to, if not worse than using the assists tbh.

Who was shouting... having a rational conversation is shouting now?...

Lots of people have been getting very worked up about it. Didn't mention you?

Engine braking is worse than using assists? What???

Ok then, just as bad. It is about as realistic given the extremes that some people do it - do this in real life and your engine will go pop.

I didn't say it was myself but nor have I seen anybody getting worked up in the threads... still reading them daily. Unless there is hissy fits going on in Mumble that you're referring to?...

I use to be a TCS/ABS/stability control user years ago even with a gamepad. I got sick of the amount of rooms I joined in rFactor with driver aids disabled that I had to adapt/learn that it's not just, on/off. Thats when I decided to get a wheel many years ago covering lots of decent car games. I wanted more of a realistic challenge. It changes the experience of car games. Smoother driving, precise throttle and brake control and finding the sweet spot before the point of no return.

TCS/ABS I found just caused you to drive with bad habits. I don't see where the fun can be had when the game does it for you. Thats not driving. I guess fantasy driving appeals to most... correct me if I'm wrong.

What were the rules set to online when some of us were playing? the last I saw the rules were set to reduced... I never got a chance to see what else was set as I was trying to quickly get a race setup configured. With not much success in 30 seconds. As it was understeering badly since I never had time to test it. As well as getting booted for lost connection and unable to join again.

Plus the last I read there were a number of people whining on the Codemasters forum regarding blowing engines, since they were trying to do engine braking like 2010.

All I use is traction control, I actually like having ABS off :p - I only have a cheap wheel, so the throttle pedal isn't amazingly sensitive.

Our races have usually been reduced rules (since full rules in 2011 are very, very bugged), ABS off, but everything else allowed.

Engines can certainly blow, but nowhere near has easily as they should do.

Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!!

Had my wheel setup perfectly, game crashed and now I lost the setup and cannot get it back!

Anyone got a decent setup for an xbox 360 wheel?

thanks

e.g. we have had some crazy ones, but I can't remember most of them - most common example is that someone rams into the guy infront, only for the guy infront to get a penalty!

I see it happens in this. I also wonder if this has happened yet... 1:17. Buemi incident, nearly.

lol say what ? to be honest 1/1 11/11 11/11 is worse than anything in f1 even being rammed in the back by a lapped driver, but hey theres plenty out there using it.

This. There were definatley people running this setup when I did a couple of races last week. Not bothering with online unitll CM fix it.

Got my system built and installed F1 , played 15 mins so far , first 10 with assists on , 5 mins with assists off , that was 1 minute on the track and 4 minutes in the gravel hehe :) , i better get practicing as would love to take part in some multiplayer fun but i would just be a liability at the moment.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

I just did a full length race in valencia on expert mode with the force india. I was leading the race in the closing stint and I spun on the last corner because my tyres were ruined from making them last till the end. Went from 1st to 7th! :(

How exactly are people using engine braking, and how is it faster?

Weyland yutani, from what I understand most people are using around 8 or 9 suspension depending on track. Most of the really fast lap times you are seeing that are like 1 second faster are usually done low fuel on options with rich fuel mode. I know I like to save some fuel for towards the end to do a really fast lap on. On Spa I gain over 2 seconds for my fastest lap and most others are at least 1 second. Often I even run lean for a lap or 2 so I get 2 or 3 laps on rich.

Fair point, 11/11 is worse than anything right now.

why is engine braking faster than actual braking?

Not sure I can explain amazingly well, but if timed correctly (i.e. not too quickly to simply lock all your wheels) then you can just bounce down the rev limiter of each gear - in practise this is much quicker than only using the brake pedal. Some users here have it hugely perfected and it can knock a good second of your best time. In real life engine braking like this would be nowhere near as effective, plus your engine would blow up - imagine changing from 5th on the motorway to 1st/2nd within a couple of seconds!

There are some good examples in videos posted in the time trial thread.

Edit: I did say I was going to be on tonight, but have realised I need to pick up the gf from uni at 8 :( - I might drive back F1 style though, so who knows :p
