I'd strongly advise people with poor case cooling not to choose a windforce. I have the Silverstone Raven case and I can barely get above 60C fully overclocked under load so this sort of temps at idle is not good imo.

The windforce is a great card, but if you're too high at stock speed and due to insufficient case cooling then throttling may limit your overclocks and you may be better off with a card that exhausts out of the case.

Over 70C at stock is definitely not a nice place to be, you're better off with a card that exhausts out of the case.

76/77C is an average temperature while playing a game or under stress.
 
Those with high temps I suggest you play with fan orientation, you need lots of exhaust for the windforce coolers. On auto with no case fans on temps would hit 65c+ turned on the exhaust fans in the 800d and the temps dropped by a good 5c.
 
put an antec spotcool directed in between my cards, definitely helps, got them running at 1280 & 1270 boost and top one runs at 66c, bottom runs at 56c in games that are using 99% gpu
 
lol lets just say it was reasonably priced. Anyways i had to return them cos of temperature issues, top card was cooking @ 90-96*C on just playing BF3, Heaven Benchmark etc. :confused: It's probably cos the cards where to close to each other and I'm running it on a mATX. Besides that my GTX 690 is on the way as we speak.... Sweet!

And they were OK with you returning them just for the temps issue. That's good customer service. Did you return it to the shop or state back to ASUS?

Yes and yes.
BUT, I did get a decent resale price on my 580 so not only did I not lose very much from the price I paid but the upgrade to 670 also cost me hardly anything.

Minimum frame rates have improved about 30% and avg. FPS by about 40-50% (although I use VSYNC so the fact I now never drop below 60FPS is the main advantage for me)
 
Well it is a bit warm today, but a good day to test of temps of these two 670s.

A little game of Crysis 2 at 2560x1600 everything ultra:

All case fans at 100% sadly. Not going to add any more fans, it's already too noisey. The above graph shows you what's possible with good cooling - the secondary card is a max 77c at max fan 69%, okay for a hot day like today. The other card because of it's position in the case and being fed the hot air from the other is 12c hotter.

Hmm, what to do. The phantom is a great card on it's own (good stock clocks, some overclocking headroom, low noise below 60%) but all that changes when paired, well with my case it seems. If I were to swap these cards for exhaust type, which ones? I wouldn't mind paying the extra for the EVGA 4096mb with backplate, but none in stock. I wonder if it's a reference pcb and cooler too?
 
Yeah that top card is definitely a bit too warm. It's struggling to keep the temp down even with fan speed at 90 percent. Hot air rises and since your case is rotated it could be getting trapped at the pci slots and building up. If having 2 identical cards isn't necessary for you, what I would do is return one of them and buy one exhaust so you can switch them around and find the position which gives best temps. I think its more heat building up in your case than the card being fed the hot air. With my 570's sli, I had hotter temps with the exhaust card on top (1 of each fan type)
 
I thought about only using one card as an exhaust, but may as well have both exhausting and a matching set :D.

On the back of the phantom's cooler near the non video output end there are slots that let air escape. It's this air that is going on to the other card. Or I have it completely wrong and it's a fact that the primary card works harder than the secondary, but doesn't show up in gpu usuage stats.

Regarding air being trapped between the pci slots - the pci slot plates are removed to allow more air out, and there are a lot more holes in the case above the pci slots.

I even tried masking taping the cards surround so the air would be forced out one way - the exhaust port. That had the desired effect of all air going out there but the fans aren't designed for that kind of air flow and the temps climbed to the extent that it was so much worse. I'm sure the designers of the card tried that ;).
