****Official GTX580 user reviews/benchmarking/overclocking thread****

well ive just ordered an MSI
spoke to sonny @ ocuk and he seems to think they sould be in mon / tuesday
its just a waiting game now

first off all switch off physx and run benchmarks

your cpu is bottlenecking them maxs xcore it will get cpu will be 30000

gtx 480 sli are superb but i rather prefer one gpu as i need it for gaming

Yeah It would do it easily :P but for now I'm back to stock speeds to keep things simple. Some more benchies for everyone :D

OK got some 1080p results done, added Dirt 2 and crysis results.

My 480 at 850 core is as fast as 580 at 778 core and do you not think it right to compare the 480 to a 580? is it not relevant some how, think on.

A wall of 480 benchmarks in a 580 benchmark thread and what point are you making?

oh yeah..

Raven see my latest results in the 580 thread, any chance you could bench your 480 at the same settings?

Off the high horse.

Thanks for the benchmarks raven they are great for comparison, really nice results too. If I can pluck up some courage I may overclock and run all the tests again to see the difference.

Thanks for benching, very interesting to see the difference between the 2 cards.

Very relevant for people thinking of buying or upgrading to the 580.

Not really a valid comparison if you are overclocking the 480 to its limit. You're just showing how far you can go with it. Of course we are missing items such as voltages, operating temperatures, card cooling when the cards are running the same benchmark. So it just a play on figures. It would be nice to see the 580 results with a similar overclock.

Is this a day to day setting or just one to impress with a benchmark?

It is good to have those results from RavenXXX2 as it shows how far you have to overclock the 480 so it performs the same as a stock 580.

Drivers 261.00, it's a 247 overclock with 1.075v, max temps 80c with custom fan that hits 70% max. The stock 580 is also clocked 11% higher than a stock 480, we need some more 580 overclocked benchmarks. For me I see no point going to a 580 so I'll skip the 5** series.

What I have noticed on the heaven benchmark at 2560x1600 is the CPU speed makes very little difference. At 3.33ghz v 4.2ghz, at stock gpu settings, there is only a 0.4fps delta in average framerate in favour of the 4.2ghz setup, a 0.8fps min framerate delta, and a 1.4fps max delta. CPU speed doesn't seem to play into this benchmark much.

What I have noticed that does effect this benchmark is GPU core speed but not as much as you'd think. My GTX 580 SLI setup maxes out at around 825mhz on the core. Didn't try to overclock the memory. But anything on the core above 830mhz and the nvidia driver stops responding and Heaven freezes. I suspect I may need more voltage. Anyway, below is a run at 2560x1600, 825mhz core, and stock 3.33ghz CPU.

I reran it at 4.2ghz and it made very little difference as expected. During the run (whether at 3.33ghz or 4.2ghz) each GPU topped out at 85 degrees. Fans were not loud, but a lot of whoosing.

What I find interesting is if I rerun the same test at stock gpu settings of 772mhz core (53mhz less then my overclock), then the GPU's top out at 75 degrees. And the fans are noticeably quiter. However the drop in performance is not significant. 2fps drop in minimum, 3fps drop in average, and approx 10fps drop in maximum.

So I have to ask, is it worth just leaving the 580's run at stock as a 50mhz+ overclock makes very very little difference to performance except it adds an extra 10 degrees to max temperature.

I suppose I should test real games to see if this is still the case. Right now I'm back running everything at stock. If anything the much much quieter fans on the 580's have me smiling.

The 480 is LOUD. The 580 is very quiet in comparison. That's reason enough unless you watercool those 480's. I tried your custom fan profile and the noise was intolerable.

70% maybe bad for you, for me it's perfectly fine, 70% is about 3000RPM, it's not bad at all, now 80% at 3800 RPM is fairly load.

That's fair enough mate. Noise is subjective allright but in my opinion the 580's are quieter then my 5870 Crossfire or 5970 4gig Quadfire setups with Accellero coolers which themselves were quieter then the 480 SLI setup at 70% fan speed. I can't proove this of course as I didn't measure the dB levels.

Bench some more games with overclock on. You should know you gain big with fermi when clocked, saying that stock 580 SLI will kill most games out there, overclocking is only for benchmarking purposes IMO with 580 SLI.

Ive had problems with heaven as well keep freezing at various stages i got to stage 25 as well on some runs.

Not sure if the new voltage tweaking is affecting this

Ive struggled to get in the 900s yet and get a stable clock yet apart from when i have the voltage at 1130 ,the temps were too hot obviously.

Apart from the above clocks i havent yet really got a solid overclock yet.

Im no expert when OC mind

This was an overclock @900 mhz on the core
