** Official ** January 2010 Transfer Thread- Rumours & Speculation in here

Last year we'd scored 2-3 less than Utd, conceded 150% more goals or something stupid, and spent our entire load on Arshavin, while a fantastic player we still won all the games we would have and we still got entirely spanked in all the tough games. A great player and one I want to keep, but he didn't change last season for us at all. Again we're scoring great, and conceding WAY to much, and it looks again like Wenger's going to panick buy for the short term leaving the squad unbalanced and weak in the future. We have strikers coming out of our ears, we have attacking midfielders all over the place, we have no wingers, crap DM's, no cover at centre back thats good enough, so it looks like we'll again splash out on a Striker.

Arshavin only kept us in the top 4 last season :o, stop embarassing yourself with these drivel rants.

RvP is always going to be crocked - just like i said at the start of the season ....Bendtner isn't the full package, Eduardo isn't himself just yet and Vela is still too inexperienced.

Sure our midfield needs beefing up but goals are a bit of a problem lately too.

Seems to be growing reports with more and more conviction that we're putting together a deal to be bring Ben Arfa to Old Trafford, has always looked an exciting player but much like Nani and Queresma has never lived up to the hype - not sure what to make of it to be honest but I guess if we are getting him on loan first it wont be a bad bit of business

EDIT: Personally I say throw 25m at Spurs and get Lennon

No, he didn't, he was fantastic last season but as with the first half of the season, we couldn't beat anyone remotely good, got spanked by the top teams(excluding Liverpool who simply weren't a top team then, or now) and we continued to spank the bottom teams. We did that before Arshavin and after, he scored 6 last season, 4 in a single game, which we didn't win. So the MOST his other goals could have won us was 6 points, we finished 9 clear of Everton, to even pretend Arshavin kept us in the top 4 is beyond ridiculous.

Goals are NOT a problem. Arshavin scored a grand total of 6 and yet we finished with the same goals scored as both Chelsea and Utd, the champions, 13 goals ahead of Everton, his 6 goals didn't take us from a non scoring team into a champions equaling team, not least because we had roughly the same goals scored in Jan before Arshavin joined as Utd/CHelsea did.

This season we are the TOP scorers in the league, yet we have trouble scoring goals? No we've been playing higher up teams, you don't win 6-0 against Chelsea like you might beat Blackburn, scoring less against better teams isn't a goal scoring problem.

As with last year we've conceded far more than the teams above us, but for a recent spate of bad form for both Chelsea and UTd that goal conceded would look much much worse, but we've also conceded more than half of what we did last year, less than half way into the season. Which means we're already scoring more than last year and conceding more than last year.

Yet your conclusion is we need more goals, yet you haven't noticed that Flamini, Gilberto, Vieira, Edu, Parlour and anyone else we've ever had in central midfield all scored way more than Diaby, Denilson and Song do. Gilberto scored 12-13 one season, Song's lucky to get 2, we'd also concede less when we had a Gilberto and not a Song in the team. So we can both improve defensively and offensively by putting decent footballers in central mid.

But don't let the stats bother you, you must be right, Arshavin was the difference between 4th and 5th, and we have a problem scoring goals, we're not vastly more in need of conceding less goals and a striker is exactly what we need.

Gilberto has career stats of 23 goals in 237 games for Arsenal according to Wiki, and in 6 seasons at Arsenal only once did he score more than 4. He was hardly a goal machine.

Denilson has 8 in 104 apps which isn't far behind. Diaby has 15 in 117 apps which is better.

Then if you look at assists, both of them absolutely wipe the floor with Gilberto.

Denilson: 11 from 68 prem games
Diaby: 7 from 76 prem games
Gilberto: 6 from 164 prem games

Bearing in mind Gilberto was playing in a better side, I'd expect him to outscore his contemporaries anyway.

edit: Actually Diaby out-scores some of the other players you mentioned:

Parlour: 22 goals in 329 league games for Arsenal
Flamini: 8 goals in 153 games for Arsenal

Well where to start, apart from the fact you've gotten your stats, WRONG.

Gilberto scored 23 goals in 237 appearances, and 16 in 160ish in the prem. He scored 10 alone in his best season for Arsenal, yet you thought to list him with 6 goals ever in the prem, ingenius stat machine that you are.... well done.

Aswell as the fact that I was talking about DM's, specifically and threw in Diaby and Denilson who have only so far managed to score against mostly terrible teams when we're giving them a whooping anyway(generally).

So other than the fact that yes, Gilberto outscored them all, yes all your stats are wrong(Diaby has scored 9 in the league, in 91 games he's played in).

You'll also remember till last season he was exclusively played as an attacking player, he's mostly been played as an attacking midfielder this and last year aswell. Denilson spent most of his time at Arsenal as a attacking midfielder, last year becoming a defensive midfield, but being further forward of him and Song every time he plays.

So I was talking more about players we play as defensive midfielders(to be fair Parlour was neither, more an old school CM, playing both ways).

As for Flamini, how many of his goals did he score in his last year as a DM, rather than most of his appearances which were inconsistant at left back, and really all over the place with sporadic form.

So again, other than having your stats completely wrong, other than missing my point which was comparing largely beneficial defensive midfielders who all contributed more, I also pointed out to Marscay that Arshavin, who contributed goals in 3 games, kept us in 4th place which was utter utter tripe. I can't find his 6th goal last year, but 4 against Liverpool, which got us a point, fantastic performance, 1 against Blackburn, when we spanked them 4-0 anyway, and one other game, so at most his goals would have made 4 point difference(assuming his last goal was a winner, and liverpool counts for 1 point). We were 13 clear, in no danger of finishing 5th, its nonsense to suggest Arshavin turned our season around.

Likewise, he suggested the leagues top scorers, are having trouble scoring, compared to who, Barcelona? Nonsense, we've conceded more goals than the top 4 for 2-3 years, mostly by a large margin, while scoring at literally exactly the same rate as Chelsea and Utd last year, and same this year. Yet he still suggested we had trouble with goals.

So could you again point out what part was wrong, if you want to go and find incorrect stats again, go ahead.

I think you've misread his post DM.

I've only seen a youtube clip (and we know what that means) but he seems to score all sort of goals, Fergie seems to regard him highly. Can't believe Berb is out for 3 months :( Our season is over if Fergie doesn't buy in Jan, we're just losing players left, right and centre!

LOL another ploughing on regardless of all evidence to the contrary by DM.

Its like watching a special child trying to do a rubiks cube.

WRONG.

The only reason I mentioned Diaby and Denilson was because YOU brought them in to it, saying that Gilberto was outscoring them, when this wasn't necessarily the case (yes he outscored Denilson, which I never refuted, I just said his stats are comprable). "12-13" goals was another 'incorrect stat' btw :)

So other than the fact that yes, Gilberto outscored them all, yes all your stats are wrong(Diaby has scored 9 in the league, in 91 games he's played in).

WRONG.
Have a read of http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/maths/contents06additionsubtraction.html and you will learn that 4+3+1+1+1 = 10, not 9.

So could you again point out what part was wrong, if you want to go and find incorrect stats again, go ahead.

Oh, and FWIW, I never claimed my stats were gospel (hence I specifically said 'according to Wiki'), but they certainly seem at least at accurate as yours.

Stats? Where we're going, we don't need stats.

I haven't seen Di Maria play...is he good ? Personally I would still love to see Krasic at Old Trafford if and when we offload Nani.

I think Di Maria looks better than Krasic. I saw him play in the Everton game and I've seen bits of him in other games and I've managed him for 10 seasons in football manager :p

Krasic I don't know, he looks good but Dzagoev looks far better.
