*** Official Kinect Thread ***

Just scored an awesome Roberto Carlos free kick in Football on Kinect sports. I tried to curl it and amazingly the kinect picked that up.

Im so impressed with how well it detects what you intend to do. Same with bowling and spin.

Another good thing, no need for batteries! So many times I play Wii around mates and the batterys are dead. Cue raiding of remote control for batteries.

my sensor is mounted about 6 inches under the TV, which puts it about 4 feet off the ground. Works a treat :)

Holy cak..

MS appear to have sold (to retail) 8 Million Units in 60 days, and well over the 5 million forecast sold through to the customer, backed up with the quote from Greenberg.

aarongreenberg @therealcliffyb We have no channel inventory, so essentially the same #....every Kinect we make we sell.

Personally, that's way more then I'd ever suspect, but since coming back to work, it's amazing how many people have bought one over christmas, even people that you really wouldn't expect to.

I don't want it to do too well, it really doesn't want to start detracting from core game resource..

Well Kudo Tsunoda has talked some tripe, but he wasn't kidding when he said it would blow away sales of the iFad which seems to have failed to meet expectations for increased sales whilst losing out massively to Kinect overall.

Even funnier was that Sony said that they were offered the Kinect technology and rejected it as it was too flakey and that the camera was too low rez 320 x 240 well it appears that, as usual, Sony are full of it, as it has been disclosed by MS that the Kinect camera is actually capable of of 4x the current resolution 640 x 480 but was crippled by MS so that it didnt hog too much bandwidth on the USB bus. Sony must have been looking at some other technology!!

The tech was offered to Nintendo

Sony dabbled with the idea of it, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/why-sony-passed-on-natal-tech

I don't think Sony where offered it, they just (as usual) have a different outlook on these things, and went with 'on-paper bigger numbers' something Sony seem to like doing..

Have you played one yet, I thought the same but it simply exists in Parrellel, effectively its a better version of the Wii integrated with the Xbox.

The games offer something that a control never can, just like a control offers something the Kinect can't.

I was playing table tennis last night, I almost forgot I was playing a game. I was moving around the lounge as if I was at a real table.

I've had one since launch, Its replaced the Wii in our front room, and the kids love it! I do have fun on it as well, I totally get how good the experience can be, but I wouldn't want MS to shift too much resource into kinect only games if that resource would normally be doing AAA first party titles.

Yeah I agree. Can't see a COD game on it !

I wonder if they to add things like the wii steering wheel etc in the future.

It would be funny to see the entire enemy team Avatar Kinect style after a round loss though and vice versa.

I don't think they would introduce props as it goes against premise and marketing of Kinect, but it sure would make a lot more sense to use a prop for steering rather than trying to determine which independent hand has the primary motion and are the arms swaying or intending to steer.

Now I've had two weeks to play around with this Kinect, i can safely say its been a waste of my money... I find the Kinect more frustrating than fun. Its space requirements are beyond a joke. I'm sick of waving my arm around like a spas, waiting for a response. When it works none of the movements feel natural. Holding a fake steering wheel for example is so much more naff than holding a controller. At first I thought it was just because it was different and that i mentally had to adjust after spending many yrs being used to a controller / mouse / keyboard / and whatever other devices there's been. But its not natural to not be holding something. Even the moving around menu's is too tedious as it sometimes loses you. I'll keep it in the hope that it improves, but i can't see myself using it for any gaming. I'm a little frustrated that even at 8ft back from the TV, with the camera at eye level, it struggles to see my feet or it cutting off the top of my head during some titles. Using that calibration card, i cant get as far back as it wants me too.

One other thing that has just really wacked me off is that Fitness Evolved title.. Paying for a full price title, and then it pesters you to buy the excercises.. Actually all you get is three measly ones, and the rest they expect you to fork out for.. Don't buy this title at all costs. Its a con.

What's everyone's high scores on Paddle Panic on Kinect Sports? Got 145 tonight and that felt pretty good :)

I've only got Sports so far, what are peoples opinions on Dance Central? I played the demo and it was pretty fun but wanted to see if people were still enjoying it. I really liked the menu system and was so impressed by how much the camera seemed to capture (like leg moving behind other leg and spinning around, Sports and Adventure seem to glitch out when you do that)

I think Dance Central is fantastic. Like you say, pretty amazing how it captures your movements. Could do with some additional tracks. Lots of fun though and good bit of exercise.

Also, I read someone that you could do a 'warmup' to the music (not practicing), but can't see it in the menus. Anyone any ideas?

At 8ft, I would be using it below the TV, and you certainly should have enough room for the calibration card, 8ft was well within what's needed when it asked to move backward when I calibrated it.

Sounds like something is up with your space, lighting or positioning to be honest, or at worst you have a faulty sensor.

Isn't the warm-up just the mix of songs you get at the end of each section i.e. once you clear all the 1-star songs you get to do bits of them in one stage?

Had Kinect for a while now, really enjoy playing Track and Field on Kinect Sports!

Had my first accident last night, went for a jump shot on volleyball and managed to smash a light fitting out :o

while i can understand a problem you may have holding your hands up to drive a car (i felt the same), i've only had problems with the Kinect Sports menus in that my on screen hand struggles to stay where i put it.

i'm at around 7.5 feet away from Kinect (below my tv) and it sees me ok and the card picks up no bother.
