*** Official Kinect Thread ***

Having read this thread and done a little research on the Kinect, I will be getting one soon once my local shop gets one in. I have got a £163 store credit so will be using that to purchase it.

I have got two rooms to use it in. The room where the Xbox is now I will roughly have 6-7ft or 9-10ft if the sofa is moved, which isn't a big deal every time we use the Kinect. Or the other room I could have a maximum 15ft length and 10ft width. The latter is just a case of moving the Xbox into its new room as we are not that fussed about using my super duper surround sound for Kinect games, so I would be just using the TV speakers.

We would consider getting the EA fitness2 thing. Any good? Do you have to purchase extra stuff like that fitness evolved?

Fighter Uncaged? Is that a proper fighting game? Do you play two player or is it single player? Facing each other or facing the screen (at an angle so you can see TV and person?)

Hope those questions make sense..

At 8ft, I would be using it below the TV, and you certainly should have enough room for the calibration card, 8ft was well within what's needed when it asked to move backward when I calibrated it.

Sounds like something is up with your space, lighting or positioning to be honest, or at worst you have a faulty sensor.

I may even be further back than 8ft.. So far, I have used the calibration card, that tells me to go back further, the Kinect Adventures, tells me I'm in the good and not ideal area, and I also downloaded the Sports demo, which also tells me to go back... I have the sensor about 8-9 ft from where I stand, I can't go back any further because my bed stops me. I also have about 13-15ft on either side all in a room that has no direct sunlight. On the Fitness Evolved title (spit) The image on me slightly chops off the top of my head or slightly chops off the bottom of my feet. If I go around the side of the bed it gets me all in, but that makes me 10-11ft away, before I'm considered in the optimal playing area. I dunno, it just seems unrealistic to me.. Unless you all live in mansions with no furniture, the kinect is too much effort.

Also I find its a little slow to pic up the waving of my arm to get me into menu's or holding my arm out at 45degrees is also a hit and miss affair. God help the thing if any of my kids walk into the room while in the middle of a session, the thing freaks out. Speaking of which, the little ones, it really struggle to pick them up too.

Here's a pic of my playing area again, for those who missed it a couple of pages back.

Is that really 8-9ft? I know it's hard to tell in a picture but it looks a little close, assuming that brown material at the bottom is your bed which extends across?

If you hadn't given distances, I would say it's too close and that's your problem, but if it's genuinely 8ft it should be absolutely fine. Something sounds screwed up with either the sensor or the calibration, your problems don't sound normal.

Have you tried the sensor on top of the drawers your TV is on?

Had my first accident last night, went for a jump shot on volleyball and managed to smash a light fitting out :o

I've punched the ceiling with a jump shot. Really got involved in the game and kinda forgot the fact that I can't even jump in the house, never mind trying to smash an imaginary ball while in the air :D Good fun though, but did hurt!

Liking the sports a lot, particularly the volleyball (minus the accident) and the table tennis. Track and field is good too, but have to wait until my neighbour downstairs is out, can't imagine what noise I create when trying to sprint.

Dance central is great fun, even if you have no rhythm (Like myself). Seems to capture movement very well and can end up being a hell of a workout. Just waiting to get Fitness evolved delivered and give that a go.

Yes but unfortunately it then blocks my TV's IR, so that's a perm no go. I also have my PS Move Eye there too, it's smaller so it doesn't block my IR.. I would love it to be a faulty sensor at this point, but I doubt it, since everything works well on it apart from every game wanting me to step back a little further.

I managed two player hurdles within about a 6' square the other day ok?

Sorry but I don't believe you. What height was the sensor?

Perhaps its better with the sensor lower? Either way that won't work for many, since a lot of IR sensors blocked by the kinect, at that position.

Not an expert on optics to know whats involved, but one would have thought, they would have made this contraption to have a play area of around 5-8 ft and not 8-12 ft. Which immediately eliminates most homes, or if not, then involves the moving of furniture, since many homes do not have an open space of 12ft between the TV and the sofa that is empty.

We've managed it too, no problem. The sensor for us was sat below the TV, probably about 2-3ft off the ground.

I've yet to see anything yet need more than 8ft and that's generous, in fact if I go back any further it tells me to stand closer! :p

Same here and mind is mounts lower on the front of the TV, I think it works better there plus it stops the TV looking like Jonny 5.

I'd phone MS, I'm sure I read about some people having the same issues as you, and it turned out to be faulty units, I've measured mine, at 8ft, I'm right at the back of Kinect ID area, and easily in the 'ideal' section for Kinect Adventures, mine is mounted at about 6ft on a shelf behind the TV.

Well I'm certainly not lying to impress you? You either can't measure or have a duff unit. Get it exchanged, moaning on a forum to people that don't have your problem isn't going to fix it.
