*** Official Mass Effect 2 Thread ***

Bought this on steam during the sale and I'm enjoying it, apart from having issues getting AA to work properly on it. Using an nvidia 580gtx with the latest drivers but keep getting some serious shimmering going on even with 8xAA and not everything is being processed by it either, leaving aliased objects all over the place. Do I need to do anything special to make AA work properly with this?

I am playing through it again. I forgot how brilliant it is. This is my fourth play through, but first on the PC.

I am also possibly having trouble with AA, though another thing i have noticed is how poor some of the textures are. All of the faces are excellent, and the armours on the squad members, but NPC armour/clothes generally look terrible.

Generally though, i have it looking very good after changing some of the settings in the .ini file

I also played through ME1 recently to get the save file, and it is good to hear references to the things you did in the first game

Does anyone else feel that it is generally a better story if someone dies during the final mission?

Try forcing Supersampling instead.

It worked much better than regular AA with ATi cards in ME2, so I'd imagine it's the same / better on NV cards.

I thought the first one was better, not saying mass effect 2 was poor it just didnt ring all the bells like the first one did, even with all the dlc.

I had to use Supersample AA to really get it to show.

Using Shepards cabin to test as there are many crossing lines on the floor tiles.

Just completed this, thoughts below:

+Brilliant performance, 90-120fps
+Graphically impressive in places, in particular the Krogan world
+Strong story that builds on the original
+Dumbed-down inventory management actually works a lot better than ME1 where I must have spent hours continually having to check/swap weapons and mods for all my squad everytime I picked new ones up
+Good mix of new and old characters - felt like some of the returning ones were a bit underutilised though
+Usual good job from Bioware on building up lore, creating a believable environment, set of species etc.

-Really really stupid clipping bug where you get stuck, had to bind a key to ghost mode
-Major console port - what complete ****ing idiot would make a PC game where you can't set mouse sens in the menu? This is the deccies, even games from the nineties let you do that.
-Stupid protection on the .ini file meaning you need an editor
-Editing the .ini file is essential for stuff like mouse sens, framerate limit, binding ghost mode etc
-consolidated control system sucks, having a single button for run/use/cover is really annoying when I'm using a controller with over 100 buttons!
-Not gaining XP for conversations feels a bit weird
-Dumbed-down skill trees feel a bit basic - although I'm not 100% convinced it is a bad thing
-Lacklustre intro, first level looks crap
-Whole being brought back from the dead subplot feels a bit lame
-Felt like the loyalty missions were really just side-missions and didn't integrate with the main story well. The actual main storyline is surprisingly short.

I played Mass Effect a couple of weeks ago and I'm fairly sure you got XP for some conversations, e.g. chatting to crewmates on the spaceship. I remember one time I was really close to levelling up so went around talking to everyone to try and push me over the edge.

It may be that the reason you get the XP is because you have progressed your 'standing' with that character to a certain level, got them to open up about a subject or whatever, but the only trigger for that is a conversation. Whereas in ME2 it felt like conversations with crewmates were just progressing plot or updating lore, you never got an XP no matter how awe-inspring your discovery.

Having checked the ME wiki, you get XP for obtaining certain codex entries.

So been playing through this again as I had the urge to :p

Man I forgot how good a game this is :) Playing through as adept this time and my god adepts are sick ! they are pretty tough going at the start but once you gain wide singularity comboed with unstable warp you can just take packs of enemys with a well placed explosion :p

I never got any of the DLC on my last play through except the bits that came with the Cerberus network. After completing it once through. I have decided to play through again and try max out renegade more. But I have also bought the Shadow Broker DLC as it says you can continue your releationship with Liara who I love :p looking at the other DLC though is any of the other stuff worth it ?

Theres, Arrival, Overlord Pack and Kasumi - Stolen Memory. I might grab Kasumi as it does mean another character which is pretty cool. But anyone else played through the other DLC. Are any of them worth it ?

I must say the one thing I keep thinking about through my second playthrough is crap what choices are going to effect ME3 :p The main one I keep thinking about is

SPOILER
Legion's Loyalty mission, if you turn the heratics will the geth come back with an evil vengence or will they help ? By destroying them it could really change the fate of what events take place in ME3. Thats of course if this actually affects ME3.
SPOILER

Edit: soz if the DLC stuff has been discussed in this thread before but I really didnt want to dig through 47 pages of info

Good, you got LOTSB. :)

And great to see you're enjoying adept!

Now definitely get Kasumi - great character (quite overpowered), and fun loyalty mission. Plus an extremely powerful SMG.

Overlord and Arrival are (IMO) not as good as the other two, but still well worth getting.
Some great combat sections in both DLCs, although Arrival might have you facepalming a bit. :p

Also if you have points left over, I would recommend getting the firepower weapon DLC, and the DLC with the kestrel armour (aegis pack).

Yea Adept is sooo much fun to play imo. My ME1 save and first ME2 I played soldier. Because well my first play through on ME I didnt really like the sounds of the other classes. As my ME1 import was soldier I just carried on that. But my god Adept is just mental. Love having the ability to hit things around corners with a nice swinging warp :p

Cool well will prob pick up all the DLC. Waiting for LOTSB to finish downloading. Are the weap and armour packs really worth it though ? I guess it is only a couple 100 points.

Yes, Firepower and Aegis are more than worth it.
The weapons are mildly overpowered, but fun to use.

You get the geth plasma shotgun, which is pretty much the perfect counterpart for the adept - strips most defences with ease, especially shields, which is great for making targets vulnerable to powers.
Mattock just decimates everything, with every class and every build. :D
You also get the phalanx pistol, which has laser targeting - a bit marmite, and I don't like using it with adept, but it has its place. Great at long distance.

The Aegis pack has kestrel armour which is the only other modular armour you can get (other than the standard N7 armour in the game). It looks good and has good stats - although you have to remember that part is not very noticable. The only thing which puts some people off are the lights all over the armour, but you can mix and match with the N7 stuff in game; say, kestrel torso plus strength boost pads, plus kestrel arms, plus stimulator conduits - just gives a nice variety, and more options to customise your Shepard.

Personally I'd get LOTSB, Kasumi, Firepower, and Aegis packs first.

Then get Overlord and Arrival later, if you don't want to spend all in one go.

ahh the points aren't a prob so il just buy the lot :p

Really can't wait to get into LOTSB though. Btw might be a spoiler but if you romanced with Liara in ME1 and continue it from LOTSB can you no longer get with Tali, Jack or Marinda ?
