*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

Just been having a little play with it, been priming for an hour at 2.6 1.4v - does 2.5 on stock volts (well did for 40 mins anyway till i decided to up it a notch).

Be happy if its stable at 2.6 - any more is a brucie bonus :)

Well im quite happy with my chip - 2.6 is stable at 1.45 on 5v arctic freezer. 2.7 is stable also but needs 1.5v and that is getting a bit toasty, hitting about 57C full load (1.45v only hits 45C full load, so quite a jump).

Watercooling is needed :)

Coz thats what happend with the 0550 UPMW chips.

The 06 steppings seem to be *** clockers and as such will no doubt be in high demand. High demand = higher price.

the opteron 170s are pretty much the same price as the 4400+ x2's now, and theres probably only 200mhz in it. heck, if you get a good 4400 you might match or even better a "good" 170 stepping chip.

not to long ago a good 60 quid separated those 2 chips, now its more like 5 bux. and the 165 being the real bargain at 90 or so pounds cheaper than the equivalent x2 Toledo back then.

best bet is still to go with an opty but it aint a bargain cpu anymore, amd are just so cleaver with there marketing lol nicely evened out for them now.

Finally plucked up the guts to remove the IHS on my Opty 170 0550 UPMW. After ten minutes with a razor blade (old style), a steady hand and a pounding heart the lid came off no problems. Last time I attempted this I fubar my 165 so I was more than a little nervous!

Temps:

Before :- Idle 38 - Load 53

After :- Idle 30 - Load 41

A 12c Drop

Looking at the IHS there didn't seem to be too bad a contact except for a little bit that wasn't contacting but the paste was dry as a bone. Cleaned off with Isopropyl alcohol and applied some AS5 to the core then spread it as thin as possible with a razorblade.

I also took the opportunity to lap the TT BT but only went to 1200 grade, got a nice 'dull mirror' finish though so this may also have aided the cooling.

Currently priming at 2.9gig, a 100mhz improvement with less heat and less vcore then previously required for 2.8...very happy indeed (and relieved!).

Good results there. I'll remove my ihs soon but my temps are fairly good anyway. Next time go to tesco will pick up a razor blade and then start hacking (delicately) away.

Managed to make it to 3 gig before P95 failed on me :D Did a 1mb SuperPI though so the potential is there if I increase vcore a tad more. May need to slacken off the memory timings a little though as I am currently 2-3-2-5.

Took 1.6 vcore to boot into windows and SuperPI wouldn't even run 16k before but now I can SuperPI 1mb with 1.49vcore. Off to do some more tweaking :p

Looks like I'll be doing the same soon then! I'm a little worried about taking it off but I think it'll be a good challenge. But i'd have to get a better mobo 'cos this ones doesn't go about 280 stable!

Oh well, i'll keep ya posted...

What heatsink you guys using. My ninja still hasnt arrived and i think i need to modify the mount on that. Was thinking of a tuniq tower but i dont think thats going to fit once the ihs is removed.

I believe it will fit, only thing to consider is the leverage applied from the height and mass of that cooler...on a fragile core.

If you had a Ultra-D that would be suicide, but with an Expert you just might get away with it due to the fact that the mountingholes are in line with the gravity..(vertical).

I'm currently using an ultra D with a big typhoon...no problems here tbh. Aslong as you tighten the nuts down enough so it is stable and wont move you will be fine. I did however use a couple of shims(foam) to take a lot of the load.

Go for it m8. I was crapping myself while I was doing it and cursing myself as to how stupid I was for an extra 100mhz (although I am now at 3 gig = 200mhz) I was shocked when I saw how much temps dropped. For some bizarre reason the chip is now more stable with less volts - bonus!

Sounds a like a no-brainer tbh. I need, NEED to change out my mobo, but I hear that the DFi boards are a little "fussy" with components.

What are you HTT, Vcore, RAM and FSB?

Many thanks,

Agent.

P.S. I've been chasing 3ghz for ages with this chip but am failing miserably!!

HTT 3x (600)
FSB 300
Vcore 1.49
Ram 2-3-2-5 @2.8v 140 divider

I havn't tried these settings with the A8n32 since I pooped the lid coz I'm too lazy but I'm sure they will work fine with the asus too.

I tried everything to get above 2.8 stable, every setting you can think of in every bios (Asus & DFI). I also resorted to changing PSU's as I thought that the droop on the 12v rails of the hiper r were to blame so bought an enermax liberty 620w which made no difference. Changed motherboards to dfi ultra d (cheap off a mate) coz I thought that the Asus was holding me back - no difference. Tried cheap water - no difference.

As a last resort I removed the IHS and finally got the 3 gig. Iirc you bought your 170 same time as me (a little before maybe?), anyway the batch is 408L and was from OCUK, just incase you were wondering.

Just take ** time m8, be patient and BUY THE RIGHT TOOLS in the first place, don't bodge it like I did with the first one I tried. Really is easy if you use the old style razorblade method, especially if you spray it with isopropyl alcohol. Last time I used a scalpel which cut into the PCB and screwed the chip. This time I got all my kit together and was done within 15 mins. Took extra care with mounting the TTBT and applying the AS5 but after all that I gotta say its very satisfying when you see the results on screen :)

I know how you feel m8, seeing others get to 3 gig and thinking to yourself 'what am i doing wrong?', there are no 'magic numbers' to be found in the bios imo. I wont insult you by saying 2.8 is great and you should stick to that, we are overclockers and want to push our hardware as far as it will go! All I can say m8 is if you are as desperate as I was and can afford a replacement then go for it!

Best of luck!
