*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

Thanks for sharing your findings with us w3bbo, sounds like you are having fun :)

I think anything above 2.6GHz is a good clock from a dual core myself, I would be more than happy with 2.8GHz.

I been using the PC as normal for a few weeks now, running 24/7 and can't complain with the speeds at 2.6GHz (FX-60 clone). I have been playing COD2 and everything seems fine (except the game is hard for me lol!).

Make sure you take some time out from your overclocking tasks to enjoy your machine, I realise that its quite easy to get sucked into the details so much that you lose the bigger picture.

So by removing your IHS you were able to clock the chip higher by reducing temps? that would back up a lot of claims that these Opterons run faster and need less vCore when running at around 40°C or less. What about your PWM/Mosfet temps? are they running cooler also? and how is your system set-up, like is it a closed case or open etc?

I havn't tried these settings with the A8n32 since I pooped the lid coz I'm too lazy but I'm sure they will work fine with the asus too.

I tried everything to get above 2.8 stable, every setting you can think of in every bios (Asus & DFI). I also resorted to changing PSU's as I thought that the droop on the 12v rails of the hiper r were to blame so bought an enermax liberty 620w which made no difference. Changed motherboards to dfi ultra d (cheap off a mate) coz I thought that the Asus was holding me back - no difference. Tried cheap water - no difference.

As a last resort I removed the IHS and finally got the 3 gig. Iirc you bought your 170 same time as me (a little before maybe?), anyway the batch is 408L and was from OCUK, just incase you were wondering.

Just take ** time m8, be patient and BUY THE RIGHT TOOLS in the first place, don't bodge it like I did with the first one I tried. Really is easy if you use the old style razorblade method, especially if you spray it with isopropyl alcohol. Last time I used a scalpel which cut into the PCB and screwed the chip. This time I got all my kit together and was done within 15 mins. Took extra care with mounting the TTBT and applying the AS5 but after all that I gotta say its very satisfying when you see the results on screen :)

I know how you feel m8, seeing others get to 3 gig and thinking to yourself 'what am i doing wrong?', there are no 'magic numbers' to be found in the bios imo. I wont insult you by saying 2.8 is great and you should stick to that, we are overclockers and want to push our hardware as far as it will go! All I can say m8 is if you are as desperate as I was and can afford a replacement then go for it!

Best of luck!

Thanks W3bbo - Your a legend. I think i'm def. going to get that IHS off and get a DFi Board. What BIOS are you using? And are the DFis "tricky" to setup?

Thanks,

Agent.

Np m8.

I had a few little problems using corsair ram as they originally wouldn't work in the yellow slots which I needed coz they wouldn't fit in the orange ones due to the Big Typhoon. Did a little reading on the DFI-street forums and they pointed me towards 'Big toes' Bios. Once I flashed to that bios everything was plain sailing and as easy to use as the Asus. The phoenix bios is a little different to the AMI Asus use but its all pretty much straightforward if you are used to playing with the bios which you seem to be.

All in all I would say that the DFI is no different to the Asus (A8n32) as far as settings go and is just as easy to setup once you have the right bios. I only kept using the DFI as I may be selling the ASUS in future and didn't want to strip down my rig again.

Thanks again W3bbo.

I think i'm going to order the DFi tomorrow. I'm looking forward to see if I can get 3ghz. I'm tempted to get another Cheapo CPU just in case I fry this one I won't be out of a Proc. And if I dont, then I can just send it back...

Yeah get the expert!

since getting mine there is simply not a better s939 mobo for the pc IMO! :)

Just ordered it (The Expert), along with a opty 175, just wanna see what its like and if I get the 3 jigglehurts without taking the IHS off, if so i'm keeping it and flogging my 170...

I didn't think the 175s hit 3gig (only seen one that did). With the expert you now have little excuse ;)

Yes, the 175'er are not that good.
There is a new performer available that is on pair with the mighty CCB1E 0550VPMW stepping....CCB1E 0609FPAW.
My advice, buy if seen... ;)

mate I agree with you. Initially I was aiming for 2.5-2.6 ghz with my chip without going over 1.4 vcore. I've been running it fine for a week now and it's super fast. Like you said, it is nice to have a FX-60 in your pc :D

I will start pushing it tonight after the CL footy and see how far it can go.
Even if it doesnt go very far, I am well happy with a near 50% overclock :D

Hi m8...i see you only run one instance of superpi 1mb which means nowt....not saying your system is unstable but you should at least run two superpi 32mb at the same time for the assurance of at least some stability. :)

Edit: and try and get your ram upto 200mhz.

Absolutely mate. The problem is that my board (ASUS A8N-E) has not got many options for dividers. I can only chose from 133, 166, 200, etc.
If I could adjust it finer then 200 should not be a problem.
Seeing as the ram is BH5 we know it could run at 250 however this board only allows for vdimm voltage up to 3.0.

Speaking of ram, I just received some Apacer generic 1gb ram sticks which happen to have UCCC ic's on them. Perhaps I should take it home and test it.
Would moving from 2x512mb BH-5 to 2x1gb UCCC make any sense?
Timings are more important on A64, hence the 2-2-2-5 of the BH-5 is nice.
But I recall UCCC dont need much volts to go far with slacker timings. So 2x1gb running 1/1 with the cpu may be the way forward?

whatchu finkin meight? ;)

Well i suppose 2gb's is better than 1gb....but i cannot comment on bh-5/uccc as i've never used them.....i use tccd which are great...especially for a low voltage mobo....and i would'nt worry about running your mem at 1:1 as with your 9x multi to get high clocks your going to have to use a divider anyway as you'll need 300htt for 2.7ghz and bh-5/uccc can't do that at 1:1 anyway.....so give them 2gb's a go and see how they do :)
