*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

Just got my Opteron 170 stable at 3ghz under my Phase Change head. Here's the core code:

0SA170DAA6CD
CCBWE 0546XPMW
1375786L50667

Following settings:
300HTT with 10x Multi @1.47v
2x512meg Gskill PC4800LE at 300HTT 1:[email protected]
DFI LAN PARTY NF4 SLI-DR mobo.
Seems to be stable. Ran 2 instances of SP2004 for over 6 hours.

Here's the pic:

I was using a pair of 1gig Crucial Ballistix PC4000 sticks with a 9:10 divider with the CPU running at 3ghz. However I was getting random failures & reboots. Now I can't even get my system to post at stock settings with the sticks in place. Time for an RMA I think.

I'm gonna push for 3.2ghz after I've done some more benchies at 3ghz & played a few games. Looking good so far.

P.S.
When I took my previous SD3700 out from under my Mach II head there were 8 or so pins left in the mobo socket  . Some condensation managed to get in under the CPU & started corroding the pins. I used di-electric grease when installing it but neglected to smother the socket before inserting the CPU. Needless to say the mobo socket got a good smearing of grease before putting the Opty in. Worth noting if you go phase change, buy a big tube of di-electric grease. Better safe than sorry. ;)

I would retest. Run Prime 24.14 which is optimised for A64's and multi-core systems.

I don't trust SP2004 as it uses an old Prime build and also 6 hours is not usually enough. Just 2 days ago my X2 failed after 6h35m. I changed multi etc and it ran 15h until I stopped it - I say 12h at least as I've even had one fail at 9h 9m.

One thing - that is a very hot chipset! 57C!. PWMIC temp is always quite high unless it is actively cooled but that chipset temp may reduce stability of the system as a whole.

Yes I know 6 hours ain't long enough. I usually do 24 hours but ain't got the time at the moment due to needing to use the PC for other things. I've got Prime 24.14. However how do you install 2 instances of it? I used to install the last version in 2 different folders on my C: drive however when I try & do that with this version it keeps asking me if I want to remove Prime.

My chipset temp is always hot. Have to turn down the fan revs a bit as it's annoyingly whiny. Plus there is the heat from the boards of 2x6800 Ultras right next to it (despite being watercooled). Add to that the heat from my water pump that is fairly near it & also there is warm air from my internally mounted Rad & it gets quite toasty in my case. I've only got one exhaust fan & the exhaust fan from my Hiper PSU dragging air out of the case too. Had to remove my top exhaust fan to accommodate the modular connectors on the Hiper PSU.
Anyway I've had the temp upto 70 before & it has not caused me problems. ;)

Any advice on the Prime 24.14 install would be much appreciated.

Dual prime setup. :). Sounds like a cramped case! Luckily my heatercore sits at the front of my stacker which draws air in cooling everything quite well. MY chipset only reaches about 43C loaded.

Nice one smids. It was you that posted that info. I remember reading that post before but could not remember who posted it.

Yeah my Rad sits at the front of my Coolermaster 201 and draws cool air in quite well. The trouble is the 2x6800 Ultras heat up the water quite well so heating up the air passing through the Rad & blowing it across the mobo.
I'd like to watercool the chipset but the SLI-DR (not expert) doesn't leave much room.

I've toyed with getting a Stacker & modding it for my phase change but my Mach II would look even more mismatched below the stacker than it does below my 201. Are you using the mobo cylinder fan at all?

No, didn't bother with the crossflow fan. I've got my rad at the front as you know and the tubing uses that area to connect to the CPU. The fan would only get in the way unfortunately.

Here's my Opty 165 CCBWE 0551 UPMW super pi 1mb only as on air and i can bench also....it will bootup at 3G as well without crashing but like i said i am on air.....so please don't ask me to prime it as you know it would be impossible....if i had water cooling different story :)

OK there is something awry going on here:

Prime-24.14.jpg

Prime 95 24.14 has been running the Blend test on each core for 9 hours 38 mins no errors but it hasn't even finished the 8k test. A stream of different tests should have finished after that time period. My core temp hardly seems to be rising at all during testing so does not stressing the cores out at all.

Is my core revision an E6 stepping? As it's one of the earlier weeks:

0SA170DAA6CD
CCBWE 0546XPMW
1375786L50667

I've tried setting the affinity in the Task Manager & also raising the priority but it seems to make no difference.

S&M test passes OK on both cores & I've not had any crashes at all when running anything.

Do I need to install the AMD Dual Core patch for Windows?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

(P.S. The desktop wallpaper was a snap I took of the total eclipse in Turkey on 29th March.......sweeeeet! )

dual opterons have always used E6 revision 110w cores. you dont really need to install the x2 patches, just allow windows to reboot. Its of course recommended but saying that I did all may stability testin before I installed the x2 drivers.
Does prime run like this at any clock speed?

Whats the CCBWE 0609 FPAW stepping of a 170 like?
Are they good clockers?
Going by all the 06 CPU's it might well be. The really new CPU's have been clocking like mad but we haven't seen too many new Opti's, mainly Venice and San Diego single cores. The only way to know is to find out for yourself - get clocking :D.

Seems to. I dropped back down to 200HTT & still doing the same thing.
It only seems to be when choosing blend on the torture test options. One core seems to be occupied but the other does not get stressed (when looking at the process in task manager). If I choose small or large FFTs then it seems to run OK maximising both cores.

What do most people select? Blend?
