*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

Well a while ago I got mine up to 2.65 Ghz when I tried pushing it I hit a brick wall, it needed more volts and I didnt want to go any higher without better cooling.

There I stayed for many a week.

But after seeing this thread again........I've just bought watercooling........my wallet hates you! All of you!!

Will let you know how it goes though :p

scoobie dave, you were asking about the lastest batch of opty's from OCUK, have you just got the one in your sig or was that from before, if they're all doing near to 2.8 i'd be very interested...

Hi BS Dave,

I've just got a new opty 170 in (this morning) and the stepping is as follows...

CCBWE 0609 FPAW.

I've been reading around the net and there isn't that much to go on, but there seems to be some mixed reviews. I'll be testing this bad boy over the coming days and I'll let ya know. Heck, if your after a 2.8ghz CPU you can have one of mine if this goes well, for the right price of course... ;)

I have also recd this stepping this morning was yours from Ocuk? Will test as soon as I can get my watercooling repaired tho might test on air as I have got an Artic freezer pro floating around. :)

Yup, got the proc from OcUK. I was thinking about water cooling but I think just hang fire for the time being. But then again i'll be saying that for a while yet...

Let me know how your testing goes, gotta add it into the table i'm constructing - Also, what are your sepcs?

I have a MSI K8N sli platinum, 1gb gskill, 250gb Maxtor sata2 16mb HDD. I have a Akasa paxpower 460w PSU is this enough for dual core opterons?

Thanks :)

Yeah, it should just about cope. The optys drain about 110W. So you should be ok. :)

You going to try and clock it on air? If you did it would be darn helpful for this table i'm putting togther. A direct comparison between water and air cooling would be ideal!

I'm going for the non-sli version of that mobo and an Opty 170. What overclock speed should I be able to get. I see you (atmadden) managed a 1000MHz overclock on your 165.

Whats your specs mate and what is the stepping of your 170? If your haven't got it yet mate you'd probably be looking at about 2.8ghz or within that area. (maybe 2.6ghz+ kinda thing)

My 165 is a CCB1E 0550 vpmw that does 2.85 now 15 hrs prime stable. I have had a CCBWE 0607 upgw that did 2.7 and a CCB1E 0606 vpmw that does 2.8 all these are on swiftech apogee watercooling kit. But to note my 0550 did 2.8 on artic freezer so all the watercooling did was 50 mhz extra and 4c cooler. All these clocks are at 1.45v the limit of my board as it undervolts. The non sli version will go to 1.65v with some of the bioses going.

I only have the one Opti (and currently selling my old X2 4400). I picked it up second hand (for a really good price) last week. I knew that the chip was a excellent stepping so I could not resist the deal when I found it. ;) :D

Finally got mine sorted and installed..

Code - CCBWE 0609 FPAW

Currently at 2.5Ghz.. on a cpu/12 divider.. and @ 1.35v

Just started prime testing (well SP2004 anyways..) and max temps appear to be around 50 - 55c.. is this about right?
I'm using mbm and due to my board (Asrock Dual SATA) I've had to select the abit board to get the closest reading possible.

I'm thinking I might change my cooler - I've got a Ninja.. but tbh its fiddly and seems a bit pants..

Temps are fine
Push 2.6 and 2.7

Mine did 2.7 on stock vcore 1.35v prime stable
needed a little lift to 1.36v for 2.8ghz :D

Change cooler, temps are far from fine...you will only ending up adding too much voltage to gain stability and generate more heat...and so on.

Temps should be under the 50c mark at all times, prefereably under 45c.

It's a good stepping, don't mess the clockpotential up with those high temps ;)

From a safety point of view then temps are fine...from an overclocking view then they are most certainly not. As Clint says you really ought to be looking at getting temps down to the mid 40's at the most, especially if you intend on clocking higher as temps increase with clockspeed and even more so with voltage. The dual opties do run hot but to get the most of of your cpu I would invest in some better cooling.

I agree with Webbo here. Those tamps do seem a little high tbh.

But webbo, on a different note. I took the IHS off my opty and... KILLED IT!

Well at least I think it has, its currupted windows already (before it even got in there).

I'll be doing more tests tonight but I think its a case of RIP opty. You served me well. i'm sorry I stabbed you, Ahmen.

Im currently dual priming @2840Mhz @1.4v :)

Thanks for your sympathy guys, I've got to check a few other things but I really think this CPU is now dead. Its currupted an OS and won't let Windows re-installed.

I'll be checking the mobo etc with other Procs but I don't feel very confident.

Agent. :(

P.S. Good going Scoobie! Your CPU is def. shaping up nicely.
