*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

Have had to step my 170 down to 2.9ghz (@1.47v) under my Mach II head. Ended up not managing to get it to boot at 3ghz on the previous voltages.
Rock solid stable over 13 hours Prime 95 24.14.

Will run it at 2.9ghz for the next few weeks. May try to up it to 3-3.1ghz after this point but it's looking like the memory controller is failing at anything above 2.9ghz. As before it stopped booting at 3ghz it started failing Prime 95 Large FFTs after 40 mins.

I just started trying to overclock my Opteron 170 today.

I'm getting to 2.5GHz on air, 41 degrees under load, max for default voltages.

Now i'm upping the voltage to see how high it can go, but i'm noticing something odd about the VCore voltage. WHen it was at 1.35 (default), the readings idled at about 1.375V. Now that i've upped it to 1.4V, it idles at 1.42V, and goes up to 1.44 under load. Is this something i should worry about?
I got my 170 last week and it's just the same. I'm running it at 2.5GHz with the OEM cooler, and when I set it to 1.375V it's idling at about 1.41V. This is on an Abit A8N-32X btw.

I tried it at 2.6GHz but it wasn't stable; Prime95 would fail after a few minutes. I'm not sure if I need better cooling (load temps were about 57degC) or I just reached the limit my CPU will do. Any suggestions?

BTW is there any software that will tell me the stepping numbers of my CPU? In my rush to install it I forgot to write it down before I put the HSF on. :(

Welcome to the forums. Dont worry about it reading 1.41v when bios selection was 1.375v. Th eonly way to know accurately what the volts are is to use a multimeter. 57 is very high and for most 170's the biggest problem is temp. Once 45degrees (roughly) is exceeded they seem to fail torture tests. For those volts though that is higher than expected. Try reseating the heat sink. What was idle temps? Also abit boards use to over report temps by around 15 degrees so it might be that your temps are fine but i thought abit fixed that problem back towards the end of the nf2 days - someone confirm.

You cant use software to get stepping details but when you reseat cooler you can note them down.

Hi, thanks for the welcome :)

Idle temp is about 35degC. I think I will reseat the cooler. I have a Zalman CPNS7000B-AlCu from my old Athlon 64, would this be any better than the standard cooler?

Yeah blinding cpu, best I have ever owned too! :D

Have you tried to overclock yours any further than 2.8?

I haven't yet no been happy with FX 62 goodness lol :D

By all means try and let me know how much voltage is needed and let me know :p

I have a feeling it will need a bit of a bump from 1.36v so it will be a balance of the increased vcore for maybe 200 mhz.Which depending on how much this is might it just might not be worth it.

Like you will notice the extra 200mhz. Im the same really, 2.8 is a nice speed and FX62 performance on such low volts ;)

Scooby and easyrider are those settings fully prime stable? I have the same stepping which does 2.82 with 1.4v but I'm on decent water cooling.

Would be interesting as maybe mine might have bad IHS contact as even with 1.6v 2.9GHz is not fully stable.

Yes My system is fully prime stable.I have no issues with temps or anything.I love my chip! :D

I'm currently using an ultra D with a big typhoon...no problems here tbh. Aslong as you tighten the nuts down enough so it is stable and wont move you will be fine. I did however use a couple of shims(foam) to take a lot of the load.

Can you still use the orange memoryslots?
My Mushkins wont allow me to use the orange slots after I've removed the IHS, they will hit the heatpipes and using the yellow slots will not work stabilitywise.

Easyrider how long did you let yours prime for? I let mine prime for 12hrs then got bored of it. :p

I will post a 24hr screeny of mine when I can find the time. . .

Have you still got the guide for fitting a xp120 with ihs removed?

Looks likes mine's very slightly worse than yours Easyrider & Scooby Dave, although it's still a great CPU, I'm thinking I might have only an average IHS contact but I don't really fancy taking it off I already did that with a FX55 and although it reduced temps the overclock was only improved by about 50MHz so I don't think it's worth it.

Well it seems that we are most certainly coming along with our 170 clocking here.

I've got a shiney new opty 170 coming tomorrow. So if the stepping it good (don't worry i'll post it!), it'll be interesting to see how the latest optys are doing.

Now that I have my DFi I the HTT limit on my Asus shouldn't be a problem.

I'll let you know how it goes and i'll get a table of 12Hr+ prime stable clocks sorted for your guys.

Agent
