Not sure if serious... A truly scalable engine would be a great thing in the industry. The ability to run the same game on any piece of hardware from a phone to a super gaming computer, and have it adjust automatically to ensure that it runs smoothly. As long as it's done properly I don't see any issues with that.
Id and Carmack are one of the few developers actually pushing technology. Would you rather people continued to use stagnating copies of other peoples work forever.
Thats just the point, the texture pop in is in the engine to make it scalable so it can work on an Ipad, but its ruining the experience for pc gamers, even console gamers have a diminished experience, so that ipad users can play the game.
The thing is, they could just make the game for console/pc, exclude the ipad, do it on a VASTLY simplified engine, take years less on the engine, work on the actual game, and make a low res version to put on the ipad.
They've massively, massively overcomplicated it, to make it "scaleable", but to do so, they've ruined the high end, and introduced a truly epically awful low end of the scale, and in each situation the game is NOT optimised for pc's, its NOT optimised for consoles and its NOT optimised for ipads. Its just a joke.
YOU can see him talk in the video someone linked about all the trade offs for making the engine as it is, then spending tonnes of work trying to minimise the tradeoff's, the problem is, just making two different games would be vastly simply, vastly better, vastly cheaper and it would work vastly better.
Its a buggy pile of poo, with dodgey textures, dodgey pop in textures and from most people, basically no actually good game behind it all, BECAUSE all the effort went into making it work on several platforms.
3 engines aimed at 3 different platforms would simply work better and take a LOT less effort, be less buggy, and look better on each platform, which is why this is pretty much a joke.
Carmack isn't and hasn't done anything for ages, what was the last great game id made? Heretic, doom 2 and before, Quake 3, since then its been VERY meh. Doom 3 was lazy, looked pretty, ran like a turd, gameplay was rubbish and boring old mechanics. Quake 4 wasn't bad but it wasn't great in any way, again bog standard gameplay, nothing new, rehashed stuff, ET was awful.
He's not making games anymore, but technology, megatexturing is interesting, for sure, but ultimately its not providing the best gaming experience, neither is this engine, nothing they are doing is improving gaming, its just doing it differently......... but worse. Theres a point where you try something new, its not improving anything but making things worse and you give up.
