!!**Official RAGE Thread**!!

What the hell?

I've never re-installed XP on my main PC which has been running it for several years, I have about a hundred apps installed over 4 HDD's, I don't run AV and there's nothing in my run/startup to bloat the OS. I run apps when I need them.

My OS drive is just 15GB, sure I keep it clean, but it's never wanting for space.

It really does amaze me how people re-install their OS all the time instead of fixing the problem or more importantly keeping on top of their stuff!?

1) "Keeping on top of things" doesn't stop the OS getting bogged down.

2) Reinstalling the OS and apps is often quicker than solving a problem that is awkward to track down. Something a lot of people don't seem to realise.

3) I run an incredibly minimalist installation. This is part of the reason that reinstalling is so quick for me I guess.

4) You don't run *any* kind of anitvirus? 0_o

XP, W7 and all other windows OSs get bogged down relatively quickly and slow down. Compare the speed of a fresh install to your 5 year old system on the same hardware and you'll see the difference. If you're the sort of person that doesn't notice this then great for you. However, it doesn't mean that the OS is great, just that you don't notice it slowing down.

True. A clean install is obviously quicker but you're talking a matter of seconds from login to sat at the desktop ready IF you keep on top of things, I don't see the point in rebuilding for that? And it is literally a few seconds difference if you don't bog your OS with services and startup apps.

+1 (2 & 3) :D

So tell us your ways so we can learn from you o masterful one. ;)

I worked in IT for 12 years, doesn't make me a guru, it just taught me how to keep my OS clean and efficient.

What's masterful about having to rebuild every six months? To me that just sounds absolutely ridiculous!

I've not reinstalled my Win7 since it came out...mine runs as swift and is as clean as a new install? I have also upgraded mobo/cpu and GFX a few times all on the same install.

I really couldn't care less about startup and shutdown times (within reason) as I can leave the PC to deal with them whilst I'm getting a coffee or whatever.

What I do care about is the speed of application loading/responsiveness and these are also things that can benefit from a reinstall.

This. I've got a small OS installation partition and did a full installation last night in a few hours. It's not hassle, and to say that an OS doesn't get bogged down with use is ridiculous, they all do, some worse than others.

I can't see them so they can't see me mentality? :p

1 - no but it helps retain at least 80-90% of the clean install performance.
2 - true, in a corporate environment you'd just image and be done with it.
3 - See I don't. My start / programs is four columns wide!
4 - No, and I've not had a virus in the past ~5 years. Why would I get a virus?

Same, I've done a complete upgrade on the same OS and never had a problem with performance as a result.

Ouch. I bet if you ran a new OS install as an experiment you would see a speed increase. Reinstalling when changing something as major as a motherboard is something I would always do, too. GPU doesn't matter quite as much but I'd still be tempted.

I also work in an IT field and know my stuff :p It isn't ridiculous at all when it's a one hour job and the result is a faster working PC. Perhaps if I was a much more patient person I could stick with years-old installations.

I know a lot of people CBA but I run many small partitions for apps and critical data, I only ever have large (100GB+) partitions for backups or less intensive data. It does make a marked difference in retaining performance over time.

How would you know whether or not you've got a virus if you're not running any kind of regular sweeps?

I get the thinking behind not running a program constantly in the background (though I do actually do this due to laziness) but not even running regular sweeps of your system is playing with fire a little imo.

Same here. It also makes reinstallation much quicker as I tend to have things that don't rely on the registry to function in a location that doesn't get wiped during a reinstall.

Reinstalling OSes is what I do as part of my job, I know what a newly installed OS feels like :p

I think it's often hard for people to believe when I tell them because it's so uncommon to find a fast and stable system that's clean but still an old install. My kind of system is quite rare I admit but if you were to see and use it you'd see exactly what I mean.

It's not hard to upgrade mobo/core components without reinstalling the OS, it just requires some elbow grease and I like to get my hands deep into the dirty sometimes.

It also helps that I have individual disks for data/documents and media. Only apps and games sit on the OS drive.

As for startup/shut down times, I never turn my PC off so that answers that!

In short, my PC is kept to a same level of condition inside and out as my car, both look and feel like new :p

Well I do install Kaspersky once, maybe twice a year to scan the entire system because as you say, to never bother would be potentially dangerous.

I also make sure I only ever download from trusted sources.

I completely agree that it's possible to do, I just don't see the point in investing time in making it work when that time could be invested in getting a shiny fresh install :p

I can happily admit that it comes down to personal preference and also patience (though from memory, XP was far worse for messing up over time than W7) as long as others will admit that the reasons behind it aren't always crazy ones :)

I'd suggest the above.

I'm going to try the 11.9 with rage driver today because the 11.8 still crashes 50% of the time during transitions from one area to the other - no crashes in the actual gameplay.

I'm also running the high quality config file and my 5850 is handling it well, but then I have to say I've been amazed at how well my 5850 has handled all my games at 2048x!

Bleek can u link me to the Config and rage driver please i can only find the outdated rage driver!

also im using 11.10 preview driver should i uninstall these install 11.9 then the rage driver on top?

ive just tried playing the game with 11.10 driver and it runs like a bag of cack on my 5870! seriously bad screen tearing and it just doesn't feel smooth at all! first game to do so since ive build this PC!

:(
