!!**Official RAGE Thread**!!

Is this game in a fit state to play or should I hold off for patches and driver updates?

Just saw this.

Found this interesting:

When VSync is turned OFF you may experience screen tearing.

"When VSync is turned ON you should not see screen tearing. However,
any time your frame rate drops below 60 frames per second you will
get a sudden more severe drop to 30 frames per second.
This is how VSync
inherently works. If your computer cannot maintain 60 frames per
second and you miss the synchronization to the vertical retrace of
your monitor then you will miss a whole frame and synchronize to
the next frame instead."

Is this the case with all games or just Rage?

I thought Vsync, just capped the fps to 60fps, not potentially cause lag in its self....

That's how vsync works in all games.

Played 10 hours without a single crash or error, just minor texture popping.

Quit out so the patch would apply and hopefully fix all texture popping, now I just crash to desktop on launch

If you can no longer launch
the game after changing the video settings to high values you can add
the following to your RAGE launch options in Steam:

+com_safemode 1

Might help you get back into the game.

Whoa!!!! This is a strange game. For a start where are the graphic options? I like to record new games on my system using FRAPS and put them on YouTube. This game gives me 10FPS using FRAPS record.

Trying to play the single player game - the game is stuck at 30FPS - and all i have is black triangle flashes flashing all over the screen. Characters appear and disappear.

I haven't really read the thread but i take it the game is bugged to bits?

Yes.

Using Rage AMD Hotfix driver?

Missed that on the patch notes I only scanned them :p

Still no luck though, also removed the custom rageconfig and cache tweak so it's vanilla but still CTD.

Validating the steam files for the 2nd time and we'll see if that makes any difference.

Edit: Stopped forcing V-sync / tripple buffering in CCC and now it works fine. Texture popping appears to have completely gone as well but I'll play it a bit more before I get too excited :)

Yes.

Yeah, just been Google searching and was being led to this hotfix. Makes you wonder why they released this game when they knew there a problem with the PC.

Reminds me of when they released Black Ops. I couldn't play this game for about a month until the patch came out - shader warming or something

Maybe they actually expected AMD to release properly working drivers in time of the game... gonna get some flack for it but - notice most of the patch notes are id having to do work arounds to get things working on AMD hardware thats not working under standard functionality... which assumably works on the development drivers id was using - not that it excuses them not testing it against publicly available drivers.

The new patch has worked wonders for me. I'm playing on a Q6600 and Nvidia 285GTX so not exactly a great system, but before the patch my biggest issue was horrible screen tearing and texture pop-in. With the new patch having some extra options I tried setting the 'Texture Cache' to large and it fixed the texture pop-in, plus I can force V-Sync now and it works fine.

Very happy with the game now, sure there are some horrible looking textures in places, but when looking at the game as a whole I think it's a lovely looking game, more importantly for me I think the gunplay is satisfying in that typical ID way. Really enjoying this game now.

If anyone is still wondering whether or not to buy, just do it for £23.86 delivered.

I'm loving it I can't put it down. Weapons are very satisfying (especially the wingstick) and it does look amazing at most times.

I should really go to bed now it is getting rather late :o

4. Messing about with global values in Nvidia control panel as it doesn't find Rage.exe for some reason...

It won't, because Steam is the application through which the Rage.exe file is launching. If you go to program settings in the control panel, click add, and then find the Rage.exe file within your Steam folder (...\Steam\steamapps\rage - if I remember correctly) you can then force v sync on using the .exe itself.

Fixed tearing for both myself and my brother.

After playing the game for a few hours, looking past some of the low resolution textures, the game at medium distance and in towns can look simply stunning. The gun play is fun. The mini-games and racing is a blast. It's a rich, alive world, with plenty of things to see. Both of us are enjoying it thoroughly so far.

I'm still hoping for a high res texture pack though :p

Would be nice but would either need a custom texture compression system or around 50-60gigs of extra textures to texture the gameworld all over at the kinda LOD seen typically these days (about 4x higher pixel density). Personally I can live with it because everything looks so rich from a distance and your generally distracted from the low res closer textures while moving around by the sheer detail of the overall game world.

Too true. A man can dream though :D

As you said, at a reasonable distance, the game can look absolutely stunning. I've played it for a good 3 hours, and if you stop looking for the poor textures, you really don't notice them all that much.
