!!**Official RAGE Thread**!!

Here's how I got mine working, after the freezing fest of late that you just described. Number 3 is really important, as is the custom config. As I got the game to stop freezing up with job_numThreads 0, and got the game smooth with the config.

1. Game was patched via Steam to new version
2. Installed 11.10 preview 2 drivers
3. Added Rage launch options in Steam with: +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +jobs_numThreads 0
4. Created a new "rageconfig.cfg" in steamapps\common\rage\base
5. Put the following into the rageconfig.cfg

6. Save, close, and run Rage.

Thanks for the help flibby. The 11.9 and 11.10 preview 2 drivers were no good for me for some reason. I uninstalled them and downloaded cat 11.6, and now the game works perfect! I got the console working by typing com_allowconsole 1 into the default.cfg. Interestingly, it doesn't use my tilde key. Instead, I discovered the console comes down when I press the ' key, that's the key with both ' and @ on it. Only thing left, and it's not even important now as I can load saved games, is that I can't get the skip intro video to work. I also typed com_skipIntroVideo 1 into the default.cfg directly under the console command, but it still doesn't skip any intro videos.

Not sure if its true or not because i haven't tried it but apparantly changing the default.cfg stops achievements being unlocked?
I put the 'com_skipIntroVideo 1' into the steam launch options and it works fine.

Quick question: Amazon have Rage for £22.91 and the Anarchy Edition for £24.99.

Is the Anarchy Edition worth £2? Do the bonus items feel over-powered? I don't like it when you're given weapons / armour at the beginning of the game which are better than anything for the first 2/3 of the game - it totally spoils the fun of finding new gear (thinking of the Witcher 2 here).

The extra starting weapons aren't that great to be honest. Though the start of the game is so easy (on hard difficulty) that all weapons feel overpowered anyhow :)

ok this game runs perfectly now. vsync on, constant 60fps and no pop in.
on c2d and 5850. 11.10v2 drivers.

F:\Rage\Rage.exe +set com_allowConsole 1 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1

and in cfg

seta com_videoRam "1024"
seta m_smooth "0"

in ccc, triple buffer ON. AI set to quality.

OK, cheers. I might just get it for the larger storage in the bonus armour - running out of inventory space is always an irritation in these kinds of games.

Roll your eyes all you want, graphic card companies need to be more flexible for people like carmack who are more efficient at producing AAA titles than the rest of the sheep.

If this was the case texture popping wouldn't need a 'fix' it wouldn't even exist.

He releases (well is involved in) a game every couple of years. It's not exactly ground breaking stuff he's now involved in (just another FPS in a market which has more FPS's than any other genre). Triple A is over rated - I've been more suprised (and enjoyed) the hidden gems like Terraria and Mine Craft than I have about the next FPS block buster.

Yes I loved Doom and Quake. I would prefer something different though - something that sets the game from the rest of the market. Something genre breaking.

Because the guy may release a great game every now and then does not exempt him from anything especially testing.

just grabbed this, game visuals are stunning, everything maxxed on my rig, 1080p res, in fps mode it never drops below 60 (vsync) , on bike / car it drops now and again to 50 ish. good gameplay too, hopeing for more story tho, as at mo its go here get that etc, wanna know more about what happened and about the world :)

i have made the rageconfig.cfg file in the right folder to enable the 8k textures however im not noticing any difference in game, is it possible im missing something? thanks!

Yeah it is a shame really as it seems liker quite an interesting world, i am also hoping for more story but judging by peoples play times it seems like there won't be much:(

I am finding it is best to just treat it as a normal fps tbh. In that respect it is great.

You are vastly underestimating what goes into his engines and how often the result of his work has directly moved game technology on a generation. While its still cutting its teeth in RAGE the engine here is about addressing the issue of artists being limited by technology and moving towards a scenario where artists can be as imaginative and pushing the boundaries as they like and the engine tries to make it a reality. RAGE is the first engine where you can literally go upto any point in the gameworld and uniquely stamp it on a per-pixel basis with a unique image as many times as you like anywhere its more like painting on a canvas than traditional games which have very limited texture mapping and have to fall back on repeatedly tiling the same textures over and over.

I'm looking forward more to the products built on top of the idtech5 technology than RAGE itself.

So yes GPU manufacturers should be working more with him than other studios which are just pimping out products built on top of a pre-existing engine.

To be fair Carmack is software engineer and not a game developer.

I to am looking forward to other titles using this technology, because the visuals that can be achieved in id Tech 5 with very modest processing power is astounding.

If you compare Borderlands or Fallout 3 to Rage there is no comparison. Rage is far far better and considering it's new tech and Borderlands and Fallout 3 are running on game engines that have been around for long long time, and as such developers should be getting better at extracting more out of them for less or same processing power.

I'm not sure I, as yet, see the wonder of this new tech/engine/whatever. Crysis (cryengine2) was released in 2007, 4 years ago, and I've yet to see anything better it.

As far as I can tell the engines big thrill is that it can scale? So they chose 2 platforms that have no scalable features at all and a rather stinted PC release thus far to showcase it?
