******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Last night was fun in 4.0

Two things I will note.

The first one is about persistence of our ships. Two nights ago on Sunday I was in the verse flying around in a msr and landed in a outpost to do a mission and died and then logged off for the night.

Upon logging back into the verse yesterday I notice there was a marker for my msr in the star map?

I then proceed to take another ship (f8c) to make my way from the Stanton gateway station in pyro, to pyro 4 where my msr was.

On the way there I had to refuel as my f8c couldn't travel that distance. After I refueled I went back on route to where my msr was and on the way there via quantum traveling, the server crashed with a server error.

After about 2 to 3 mins in recovered successfully and I had reached my destination..
And yup my msr was there!

Still in tacked and flyable. The only issue with it was that the rear ramp was left open and I could not close it again..

I went to another derelict outpost to just have a look around and saw a carrack land. I was going to snipe the person as I have a (trust no one policy) in pyro but he it she came out in a Ursa so I left it.

Seems like ships are persisted and not only that, you now get a marker for it!

This means you can in theory fly a polaris or carrack. Park it in the middle of nowhere and get on a pisces to fly around somewhere else easier.

Onto my second point : contested zone..

Last night me and 6 other org mates tried the contest zone in pyro.

What is it? It's a area inside a station where there are a bunch of npc enemies and players and if you reach the end, get a nice juicy reward (not auec)

It involves grabbing security keys first from one of the asteroid derelict bases(filled with npc as well) and then using that to enter first area of the contest zone.

I won't spoil much but all I can say is that I had another wow moment in star citizen.

For me my background and ideal game loop is fps combat and mission and this particular mission is just simply amazing.

Throughout the play through there was only a handful of times where we had dysync issues and /or lag but other than that. It was stable. The AI we came across reacted brilliantly and the pvp bit was also responsive as well.

All together it was a fun night and this patch is shaping up to be amazing (when it works)

Contested zone can't really be done solo you need to group up. The more the better.

If Xmas wasn't next week, I would say this patch is 2 weeks away from being ready but I think cig will push it to live by Friday.

Its not perfect. Far from it and even if they spent another 6 months bug fixing, it still won't be at launch. No game at launch with a high player concurrency will have a smooth launch.

Anyone on the fence waiting for 4.0 to drop before playing it, don't. Wait for 4.0.1 or 4.1 to jump in if its been a while since you played

It had been a while since I’d checked out SC so yesterday I logged in the have a look at the EPTU and 4.0. Server performance was pretty poor and I didn’t do too much apart from go through the jump point to Pyro, which was pretty cool.

Fast forward to this morning, and there was an update. Since then server performance has been outstanding! I’ve explored a bit of the new system, taken on a mission to deliver some goods (I don’t believe it’s 4.0 specific but loading the cargo myself is a nice touch for added immersion) then once reaching my destination spotted someone stalking my ship waiting for me to exit. I decided against that!

After that I went off exploring on Bloom, chasing the sunset. Admiring the peaks, bodies of water and light shafts as the sun came down. This game does scale and atmosphere so well. Then, just off to my 2 o’clock, I get a radar ping. After a few klicks I’m greeted by a Polaris, abandoned, parked on a cliff edge with the sun coming down I front of it. I’d not seen one of these in game yet and the sense of scale was great. I was in a tiny C8 Medical for reference.

I stayed there for a bit, taking in the ambience (trying to find a way in, to no avail). As someone who tends to dip in and out of SC a couple of times a year I am continually impressed with the world that has been created, its little things like bumping into others (or at least their ships) who have been exploring in the middle of nowhere, in the vast expanse of the game world. I just don’t get the same feeling or experience in other games.

I hope as the number of systems continues to grow, that we do eventually get a good exploration game loop. Right, I’m off to investigate what I can chop in to buy a Polaris!

I had a nice little random encounter just now.

Thought I'd try a hauling mission for the sake of it and was moving crates off the freight elevator at an outpost when a ship started circling. He gave the 'friendly roll', I flashed my torch and carried on.
A minute later, the dude's helping me move crates over to my ship and nobody got killed on sight 'because Pyro'.

Are you taking notes, Mendoza?

I used a loaner Polaris to do Save Stanton phase 2 missions. Just flew over to the ship to rescue, parked and hopped around the turret positions shooting.

I quite like it although don't actually own one, still no idea why I had a polaris as a loaner at the time as the largest ship I own in a Cutlass Red just now :D

Do you need to have some (no doubt) paid thing going on to access PTU?

PTU is the public test universe, when it's open it's generally everyone can get in.
EPTU (Experimental Public Test Universe) is the early test universe that's generally Evocati and CIG only, however also can get opened up in waves to everyone over time, which seems to have been what happened here. Generally while being a subscriber etc gets you earlier access, being an active player does too.

Access waves:
Evocati: ~2900 players in this group.

Wave 1: Subs, highest hours played between last 2 patch cycles, and Legatus Navium

Wave 2: Subs, Second most active players from previous 2 patch cycles, and Praetorian

Wave 3: Subs, Third most Active, Wing Commander, Space Marshal, and Grand Admiral

Wave 4: Subs, Fourth most active, High Admiral ($1k spent)

Wave 5: Open PTU, everyone is in.

Late to the party, Jonney :p

@Noxia Next time, copy your LIVE folder into a folder called EPTU (or PTU if that's what it is at the time) and it'll just update what's needed, rather than download the whole thing.

This is indeed a pro tip! I'd have been far more annoyed had I just done the download on my old 30 meg broadband rather than my new gig speed lol.
10 minutes versus overnighter.
