I was considering buying to new PC and Star Citizen was a game I’m keen to try out!
What kind of CPU / GPU combo would you guys recommend to get reasonable (60 FPS+) performance at 1440p / 4k?
Would an RTX 4070 / 5070 12Gb
card be sufficient or should I look at something more powerful 80/90 series and more VRAM?
A 4070 is a solid 1440P 60Hz GPU for this game, tho the level of performance you're going to get ranges from 40 to 100 depending on where you are and what you're doing in this vast verse, most of that will be down to the CPU, its a CPU heavy game and there is a significant number of area's where anything but a 7800X3D or 9800X3D is going to bottleneck even a 4070 so anything better than that will not help. There are people who upgraded from 3090 Ti to 4090 and complain they didn't see any performance improvementso....
One of those X3D chips is probably not viable when they cost as much as your GPU so what i would recommend is a Ryzen 9700X, Intel alternative would be the 14700K but the 9700X is better.
You should also run it' and the page file on your fastest drive, 32GB minimum RAM, i say minimum because while its mostly fine with 32GB i think it can creep to 32GB+ and you get a noticeable slowdown so if you can manage 48GB or 64GB it would be a good idea.
Edit: i run Ryzen 5800X + RX 7800 XT, That 32GB RAM i spoke of and a PCIe 4 NVMe, its perfectly fine other than when Pyro Space Stations are really busy my System RAM is maxed out and it is laggy, the CPU is my biggest problem, the GPU has more legs than the CPU can keep up with.
4K at 66% upscaling, it does make a visual difference than 1440P native. The RX 7800 XT doesn't quite have the legs for 4K 60 native, not far off tho... Its still very playable.
Thanks for taking the time to reply so comprehensively. It's helpful to read your thoughts so totally appreciate it!
My intial plan was, as you've suggested, to go with a more mid-range spec along the lines of
AMD Ryzen 9700X
Nvidia RTX 4070 (or RTX 4070Ti)
64Gb DDR5 RAM (as it's pretty cheap anyway viewed against the costs of a whole PC and I'd use it for my work [Docker / VirtualBox)
I did think about the 9800X3D but it's quite expensive and felt like it would soak up too much budget on a mid-range PC. I think if I was going for an RTX 5080 I'd also probably opt for it though.
Do you think it's worth spending another £250 on the RTX 5070Ti 16Gb over the regular RTX 5070 12Gb for the extra VRAM? Is that something Star Citizen would benefit from at 1440p/4K?
2026 for sq42So. 2025..
Any release date on this yet? We still alpha testing in here?
Just want the single player campaign ffs.
2026 for sq42
I've had access to this from an AMD voucher I can't remember the other game I got with it how is sq42 still not released even Stalker 2 is out?
Hey Humbug no the voucher had multiple games you could choose from you got a AMD themed racer and access to star citizen and sq42. I think the other game I chose was soul survivor the Salem ghost detective game. That other game IS Squadron 42.
