******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

The 'Star Citizen' side, the online component which covers stuff like Arena Commander, Star Marine (fps) and the Persistant Universe are essentially public alpha, so we see a lot of its progress and get various updates with new features and whatnot.

Squadron 42 would effectively be private alpha, but thats purely because it'd be daft to release an unfinished movie and let people see it as its being filmed with green screens still in, SFX missing or placeholder etc etc. It just doesnt make sense to spoil it by giving anything away about it. What we saw at Citizencon is everything seen by the public, and theres very little more we know, beyond a few ships being fast-tracked at F42 for Sq42 telling us they'll be involved somehow.

I believe, and i assume its still the case, that SQ42 will be released in parts, chapters. Roughly 5x 10hrs of gameplay (iirc, thats gameplay, excluding optional chit-chat with NPCs). However i also thought CR said not long ago something along the lines of 'it didnt make sense to release them in bits', but maybe i just wasnt paying attention and misunderstood, because i dont see them having a 50hr game ready for their 2016 date.

Also, it seems i didnt hit submit on my PC when posting something hours ago, so i'll remote in and submit that in a sec, assuming its still there (not sure if the token expired, which might mean i've lost the c&p cos ive done stuff since) :(

nope, i seem to recall the token had expired when i hit submit, so i went back a page to update it and submit the reply, but i dont even have an OCUK tab open on there and none tab-back here either.

Was basically waffling about the REC, how everyone who got their Scythe test drive credits backdated when REC came along, will be well served if they hold onto them, because when 2.0 is released you'll be seeing the Conny and Retaliator in there, and rentable with REC. Then its only a matter of time before we see the Freelancer, Starfarer and Idris (hard to tell how far along the Idris truly is). Then you've got the Vanguard, Carrack, Reclaimer, Orion... theres a whole load of multicrew ships which will start coming through, and their REC price will be multiples of the single seaters.

I know when it arrives, i'll happily spawn in my Retaliator (base/cargo, but should get a bomber loaner for the reclaimer) for absolutely anyone to jump in, and i suspect plenty of others will too. Its not like they can do anything to it that'll cost me UEC or something. So if theres a few ppl here with tons of REC, IMO it'd be better to hold onto it anyway, even if it could be shared.
A $1000 Idris will be 100k REC, so thats only 21 days access, it'll soon dwindle down, and that Javelin... 250k! Hopefully we can still earn REC in the BPU, but i guess even if you dont, theres another small chunk of REC added each month from subscribing anyway.

edit - internet goes down when i hit submit :D

I think they scrapped the Chapters idea for Squadron 42 now Paul, the plan is to release the full game instead as Episode 1 of a trilogy.

Episode 1 to include approx 70 missions and is still scheduled for 2016 as far as I know. All the mocap is done so I can see it happening, personally I'm happy to wait if it needs more work though.

I've barely touched Arena Commander as it's not my cup of tea.

I am looking forward to Alpha 2.0, the multi crew and fps stuff is what I've been waiting for. I still don't think we will see it until the beginning of December.

I've played a bit of Arena Commander/racing at times over past 12 months but CBA to keep downloading it or remap controls every time there is an update. Think the next time I download will be when 2.0 is released.

So to summarise, SC4 started out as an MMO space sim.

Now its an FPS and potentially a RTS type game?
(As well as single player space sim eventually?)

I cant even understand how are all these elements are linked. Confoozed!

Single player and FPS were always planned from the start, although I think FPS was more limited to boarding operations back then so that has been expanded to everything now.

The single player Squadron 42 is supposed to be a bit of an introduction to the persistent universe but it is a separate game really. There has been some talk of stuff from Squadron 42 carrying over into the Persistent Universe but I'm not 100% sure how all that is going to work yet.

You walk around on a planet, shoot people if thats your kind of thing, then get in a spaceship and shoot people, or board there ship and shoot them face to face.

SC is a first-person universe, everything is done first-person and upon joining/connecting it'll be seemless transitions moving between on system and another, between flying a ship, landing, getting out and walking around a planet or large spaceship etc and so on.

What you do while in the game is up to you. You can be a trader (economic transportation game), a fighter pilot (space pilot game), a soldier (fps), racing pilot, explorer, pirate, paramedic, scientist, commercial pilot, bounty hunter... its what you want it to be, and its all set to be within a rich and diverse universe/multiverse.
You can be whatever you want, whenever you want. So if your playing with a few friends, maybe you haul goods around for the $$$ and they help escort you, when they log off, you jump into another ship and go looking for wanted criminals and bring them to justice.
As long as you weren't spotted doing illegal acts in a UEC partrolled area, putting a bounty on your head, you should be able to swap roles at absolutely any point.

I wouldnt call it RTS though, there should be the ability to captain a fleet from afar i guess, but its not an RTS any more than Battlefield would be because it has commanders in it ordering people around.

Also, 3rd person is available too, with slight disadvantages (its more for cinematic purposes, than intended to be an equal gameplay perspective).

The only genre Star Citizen falls into are space sim and massively multiplayer, what you do in your time is your decision, theres no skill trees, no experience points, everyone is equal. Be what you want to be, when you want.

edit: to shoehorn the FPS aspect in clearly, theres an 'FPS' module coming soon called Star Marine which is an in fiction combat simulator, exactly like Arena Commander but for training soldiers.
So right now, as well as when the full game is released, you'll have the option to compete in simulated combat games a bit like we'd play ARMA or some flight sim game today. It'll have entertainment purposes, as well as competitive and training purposes.

That said, its a first person universe, and if you want to pull out you gun and shoot people, you can, with all the repercussions that come with it of course. So the whole game you can play exclusively as a soldier for hire if you wanted. If you just want to be a fighter pilot, or a medic etc then just be that, but there will be thousands of people in the game, and 10x as many NPCs doing their roles in just the same way, or doing absolutely whatever they want. So if you take on a mission to restore a space station to be operational and wipe out the hostiles who've taken over the location, it'll involve some FPS in a natural way.

Cheers for the above responses folks, clearer.

So when the hell is this pencilled for release? :)

At earliest the whole completed game will be released 2016.

We are expecting the Alpha 2.0 to drop sometime soon (next couple of months) this will allow you to have multicrewed ships, fps combat, exploration etc... all rolled into one.

Cheers. Ok just downloaded from the website.

Am I right in thinking that I can only still move around the hanger, get into the ships that I purchased but that's it? (not fly around in them?)

Arena commander takes me to these tutorials... is this correct?

When you load into the hanger, behind you are a set of doors, go through those which leads to an elevator, via that you can access the ArcCorp social module.

You can fly around in the flight ready ships, just not directly from jumping into the ship.

Jump into the simpod in the hangar (round looking thing near where you spawn) or just click Electronic Access from the menu when you press escape.

Go to Arena Commander there, Spectrum match is actual multiplayer with options for free flight, deathmatch etc and drone sim is the vs AI version.

If the only option is the tutorials then something is up.

Cant remember exactly but you can play Arena Commander which is a dog fighting simulator and as mentioned above if you look behind you when you load in you can go through the big doors and into a lift to take you to Arcop.

I went through my PayPal history tonight to see just how much I've spent on the game so far (I've done a bit of buying and selling on the grey market, so it was difficult to be sure)

Turns out I'm currently $159.17/£103.12 in, which was more than I thought to be honest... (its difficult to be 100% sure with exchange rates, but that's today's exchange rates)

On the plus side, I could probably sell 2 of my Omega packages for $50 each and sell a bit of melt and start with a freelancer package for $40, so that's cool :P

I guess pretty soon is going to be the time to remember its real money, and wonder how much I actually want to bring through...

Starting to wonder if I paid too much tbh, I wouldn't mind greying down to something less...obtuse.

It would appear I could at least double my money currently...

There's a little white pod in the hangar you can enter to go into "arena commander" which is essentially an in-game simulator of a game.. gameception!

Think hitting escape gives you that option too.

Grey market has a lot of risk involved especially with more valuable ships so you might want to check out a middleman (buyer pays him the cash, he holds it until you transfer the ship to the buyer), there's some pretty respectable ones on the star citizen trades subreddit.

Made a fair bit of money on the grey market, not really done any selling for 12 months + but it did pay for two holidays abroad,a new GPU and essentially mean I haven't put any of my own money into the game outside of citcon. :p
