******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Got it yesterday, took around 4 hours. Port Olisar is nice, more to do and I like the way shopping is working just my performance is so crap; to be expected on a 270x class GPU with 2GB ram but it is worse than 2.3 that is for sure... Also they changed the damned controls again, took me ages to figure out that 'f' has now become quantum jump rather than the midde mouse button and with my xbox 360 pad connected, it screws up flight and shooting every now and then.

Folks (Halfmad, Paul): Ive really been out of the loop on this game. I received the email about the new alpha and in light of this, is the main RSI website the best place to get up to speed about the game or is there somekind of Wiki which I can spend sometime reading up on to bring me up to date about all the facets of the game?

What sort of stuff are you wanting to know about, and how long back are we talking about? Its also worth adding not that much has really happened the last 2mo or so, 2.4 is the big thing and that was about 6wks overdue due to the complexities and numerous issues (i think PTU got to patch T).

Im 'babysitting' my 2 neice and bored while they watch Zootopia :D so have nothing to do for the next hour or so :D

Well let me put it this way bud. There is a knowledge gap all the way back to when the funding for the game was originally towards both games (am I right in saying that now its split between SQ42 and SC?)
In "time terms" I would say at least a good 2-3 years.

Sorry if that's not clear enough! :) But any links you could provide would be magic. Im going to be on the plane travelling tomorrow, so would be nice to download some material to read and catch up on this.

Jeeze, ive got about an hour, not a month :D

Theres a fair variety of stuff ive added on our org/clan website that might cover a few things: http://mercury-rising.org/star_citizen.php

Some decent reads from the RSI site (IMO)...

They're pretty elaborate documents, what i like about them is that even when the subject matter isnt something that particularly interests you, understanding the thought process behind it is certainly reassuring and useful to give you an idea of the depth they're going into and they're not planning on making something shallow and button-clicky.

Thankfully all of those links come from an old forum post i'd started for members to read up on a few things that'd give them an idea of the intent of the game. Theres a handful of examples/demonstrations which show what they're doing, like ArcCorp, the Mini-PU, the landing demos and Planet to Pupil video, even FPS demonstrations. Without having a full game, all we have to go off is what they've told us about, shown us, and the stuff we're able to experience first hand. Those posts cover a lot of the stuff we dont really have, and IMO say a lot about the intent of CR and co. Its why its going to take as long as it will.

You could use a site like ClipConvertor (http://www.clipconverter.cc/) to download those videos and watch them on the flight.

Those are a few videos i'd saved to HDD to go back and watch at times, and they cover a decent variety of stuff, and all the gameplay is legit, i think Nyx is the only one that wasnt performed live, quirks and all. CIG dont tend to do highlight reel trailer type stuff, more demonstrations of WIP tech. The Senate Speech i think its a non-interactive cutscene clip to set the tone for SQ42.

Plenty to go off there, i'd say :D

More than enough! Thanks so much bud. Ill run though all this tomorrow on my travels.

Yeah it's frustrating, I'm going to leave it a week and wait for some more server fixes and hopefully some of the hype will have died down.

I was taking a look at the game on my mates machine (via GeForce broadcasty thing) with my account, as i'd grabbed a Reliant to take a look at it. When i later brought the Starfarer in, i realised that the winning weapon is the same as the SF's nose guns... so cos i grabbed 3 Buccs, ive inadvertently ended up with 7 of the mofos... SEVEN :D

They'll get sold in the PU and any earlier opportunities with wipes and replaced with something else, so no biggie, just a shame it wasnt something new to try out.

Yeah, that was released last night. I posted it elsewhere, went on a bit of a rant on the subject, and then forgot to C&P the useful chunk over on here :(

The Dragonfly concept sale is up - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15382-Hatching-The-Drake-Dragonfly

$35 Single ship (matt black or concept exclusive yellow)
$65 Double pack (one of each colour)

$300 Cat + 2 Dragonfly double pack (all 3 LTI).

The Caterpillar is also being sold singularly for $245 & 6mo, however anyone wanting one may be frugal to do so by purchasing a Dragonfly (LTI) and because its on sale, the CCU path to the Cat is available. So CCU to the Cat, and its a $245 Cat with the LTI we all love (you'd lose the CCU if melted later, however).

Also worth adding, $0 CCU for Dragonfly to Dragonfly (or from Aurora LN) which might be useful if you wanted 2 Yellow limited-edition skinned not 1 of each, or prefer 2 matt black, or dont want to buy one today but want access to the yellow skin for $0. Plus Constellation Andromeda to Caterpillar ccu at $20 is the cheapest CCU path if you want that option available in the future.

Caterpillar update video

------------------------

If you're interested in buying a $200-$300 ship in the future... (Otherwise, you can ignore this waffle :D)
For what its worth, its extremely likely the Cat will go up in price when its hangar ready in a few months. Buying a Andro-Cat CCU this week could in fact save you around $20-30+ towards a more expensive ship in the future.

Its not about wanting the Caterpillar, its about wanting something that'll increase in price the most, and in turn save you more towards a more expensive ship.

What you want is CCUs to a not yet hangar ready ship. Like Andromeda to Caterpillar. Ideally, the starting point should be a ship on sale 24/7.

The reason you'd do it is because you can manipulate this to save money on a more expensive ship. In the last few months with price hikes on the Reliant and Xi'an Scout, it'd be possible to go from something like an LTI Dragonfly to a Sabre, and only pay $140 for it! Just by taking advantage of price-hikes before they happen.

In most situations, its just not practical, it either means funds locked into CCUs or having to use up unmelt tokens to use credit (or using cash to get them back). However it doesnt take a genius to spot the Caterpillar is close, it'll get a HR-phase price hike, and a $20 CCU could effectively be worth much more to you in a few months time.

Im playing the long-game towards an Orion ($325). My goal is to get there spending just $250 of credit. Whats crazy is that its completely plausible that you could have got there for $185, using the Reliant, Scout, and Starfarer price bumps.

A $325 Orion for $185 and a heck of a lot of foresight or 1 time machine. Thats a $140 saving, by taking advantage of CIG increasing prices! Thats also ignoring the fact that the Orion may end up being $350-375 when finished.

I bought this a while back just before the price increase but I haven't touched it yet. I intended to wait until it was fully release before jumping in, is it worth getting into it now?

Short answer:
No, not by most peoples terms.

Long answer:
Unless you're pretty open minded, there isnt really a 'game' there yet, theres plenty of mechanics in place like waking/respawning in a bunk, requesting one of your ships, then going out onto the landing platforms and taking off, 'warping' (quantum jump) to location ~400,000km away in about 6sec, and then doing something at that location in space (things such as arriving at a comms satellite, EVA'ing out of your ship and into the comm station to switch it back on... or off if you want to be an outlaw, or one location gives you a series of small missions, another is an abandoned base which has a Alien Isolation type mood to float through etc), but theres no real story arcs, no real economy system.

Its basically bits of space combat, and trying the different mechanics, exploring a little. You can get a good 2-3hrs taking a look around, but beyond that there isnt something that really keeps you going back day after day.

IMO, the best way of describing it is as an advanced multi-player tech demo. Anyone not following SC isnt going to see a 'game' to play right now, only the framework of what the game will become. Theres enough to be in awe of what they've done, and how the bits which arent there but will come, are going to make it special... but its not yet something most people would term a game.

Thats a pretty good sum-up, agreed.

Thanks for the advice, I've decided to leave it for now but I'll keep a closer eye on it than I have been.
