******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

I had a very brief go on this as caught the end of the freefly week. Was surprised I couldn't get an immediate handle on the ships like I did with the heli's in BF but thats what has made me want to go back to it...

If someone was buying a cheaper package right now with the aim of solo play is there one that particularly stands out ship wise? Surprisingly very unlikely to play Squadron 42 so if a package is cheaper without i'd rather take that. I did look at a few 'best ships upto $100' videos but they appear outdated and the best ships mentioned more expensive now.

Cheers.

Also I was using a M+K - is a joystick a bit of a necessity like a wheel is with Assetto Corsa or can do without? Good cheap one?

The Avenger is the best Starter Ship, actually a very good ship full stop :) https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Avenger-Stalker

I use Keyboard and Mouse, TBH i'm a bit ignorant of Joysticks and i don't get why people use them for games like this, i know a guy who bought himself a fancy one and now insists on using it, so can he fly his ship well with it? nope!
Other than using 2 so you can use one to look around i always feel people who use joysticks are at a disadvantage, nothing is as quick and precise as a good mouse.

Anyway, in other news ? ? ?_? ?? :D

And, loving to new ATV format.

Just buy the cheapest package, you can upgrade the ship later if you like. And you can "rent" ships with in-game money for now.

^^ What New boy says.

You can upgrade as you feel necessary, Avenger is certainly best value for money though. I've flown/reviewed all current ships flyable except the Constellation and Starfarer (connie is being worked on): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkRivnDlnEs&list=PLIYPRosycqLzBU64_3wnJufD8s9cSnXCt

As far as controls go, HOTAS (joystick/throttle) or even with pedals gives best immersion and arguably best fine control of ships but it requires practice and patience to get very good at it and each ship handles differently which can frustrate players. Mouse/keyboard, dual stick (personally I hated this), Mouse/throttle and joypad are all viable. CIG is going for a "device agnostic" approach, with none given a huge advantage over others although I'd argue Joypad is simply too limited to use especially when you move from flying to FPS combat.

I quite like using keyboard/mouse or throttle/mouse though and it's easier to switch to FPS for movement inside the ship etc.

If you are going for a stick and want to try one out the two best cheap ones worth getting at the T16000M (has a basic throttle in the base) and the Hotas X (has side by side throttle). The T16000M is arguably one of the best sticks (throttle on it is pants) and is routinely reviewed as a joystick up with very expensive ones, I use it paired with a CH Pro throttle for now but I'll likely sell both soon and either get an X56 or move to keyboard/mouse for controls. There is a Saitek developed controller coming for Star Citizen but it's worth while waiting on others getting it and testing it before purchasing and it's unlikely to be released for purchase this year anyway.

Have you set it up to use GPU encoding ? it will use the same dedicated Instruction set on the GPU that ShadowPlay does (Nvenc)

Just recorded about 90mins with Worzel and Impman (plus randoms) in a constellation, seems fine at 1080P, just things seem to get touchy when I up it to 1440P. Might be my SSD can't quite cope with it although I suspect it's just me wanting 60FPS, fairly hit bitrate and it being too much when running such an unoptimised muddle of alpha-ness that is Star Citizen.. :)

Are you keeping an eye on GPU Memory? i get 3.8Gb @ 1080 Very High, i Have GPU power plenty to spare at 1440P, what kills my performance is GPU memory, you have a 980 don't you?

As others have said, the Avenger is one of the few ships which sits at a nice price point and is a lot of fun for doing multiple roles. Its a nice looking ship, has an interior which allows for cargo space, and its pretty competent in a fight. Really, all the things it does, its better than any other ship of an equal price.
I do wish more ships were module based like the Vanguard, Retaliator and Caterpillar, so 1 Avenger could do cargo AND bounty hunting (and E-War too) from a base cargo ship and the rest bought in-game etc.

I bought a HOTAS for SC, i bought it because i want that immersion, the connection to the ship. The different controllers all have their own perks, one of the downsides to a HOTAS is aiming, its far far easier when the ship rotates to where your mouse is pointing, and the gimbal turrets can rotate and shoot at what your mouse is hovering near. Your aim with a HOTAS is where your nose points.
SC aims to help by essentially applying a penalty to gimbals, so a size 4 gun mounting point can have either a size 4 gun hard-mounted/fixed, or a size 3 gun on a gimbal mount. So its harder to aim on target, but when you land a shot, it'll be more powerful (iirc, each size up is ~50% more powerful... more capable really, like-for-like).

Im not into SC for the combat though, which helps, it wont be so essential, it'd be like playing AC for the enjoyment, rather than looking for pure speed benefits. KB+M seems like the best solution, everyone has them, theres no real punishment, its ideal for non-flight stuff (walking & shopping, fps combat, game interaction such as mobiGlas etc), whereas the HOTAS is good only for flight and could get in the way of your KB+M access.
I've actually got my setup so i can flawlessly have my KB+M where they'd be 24/7, the HOTAS firmly mounted where its comfortable... and my wheel & pedals can remain in place. That isnt really easily doable for most people, it becomes expensive, compromising, and possibly inferior to the simplest option.

Its a bloomin hard sell in all honesty, but on the rare occasion i fire the game up with the HOTAS set up, i really enjoy it. I'll use it constantly when its at a point where im playing the game constantly, for now mouse is quick and easy.

Glad you liked the free-fly enough to want to buy it, but i suspect you'll jump at SQ42 too when thats gets released :D theres a lot of work & content happening for that we're not seeing, and unless your mostly interested in trade & industry stuff in SC, there should be some quality combat going on in there and stuff that will be seen & experienced first in SQ42. The good thing is you can add it on later if you change your mind and im pretty sure theres no price increase because you didnt buy as a bundle, you're not punished for having a change of heart.

I'm with you on the HOTAS Paul, I'm giving keyboard/mouse a good try though and to be fair it's actually quite good, not ideal - especially digital control of thrusters but not as bad as many expect.

I'd love my Steam controller to be better, might look into that again for a laugh :D

Steam controller seemed fairly good when i tried it, down side was when 2.4 released all the key bindings ect where screwed up

May give it another go tonight!

@humbug! You on tonight?

Edit:

There's an update for roccat's power grids for use with 2.4

I hate spamming folks, think a regular night would be best, might eventually migrate onto the ocuk discord rooms too as tbh who cares about what orgs people are in lol

If its a meet i don't mind getting Email, in fact that is how i would prefer to be notified as i don't tend to check myself all the time.

But yes a regular meet and in OcUK Discord channel also sounds great.

The Orgs will come into play once it goes live and we all work to build up our Orgs, right now its all just about mindlessly messing around. :D

Cheers Longbow :)

Have made an announcement on our forums that the TS server will shut on 12th Sept and we'll move on over to OCUK discord with Reddit SC discord as backup.

we've all been here....
