Morphologis has done a handy video with an overview of how to check out the Invictus content when it goes live on Friday for any newbie players.

I have to say, I've been enjoying the Invictus stuff so far and it's been massively better after I reinstalled SC onto SSD. It seems the game doesn't like HDDs so much.
But while most of the big lag has gone, it's still full of minor lags with glitches and bugs on everything, while still feeling like it's all done with annoying QTEs. I might have to try VR and see if my HOTAS will work.

I'm also expecting the game universe to ultimately be as shallow as Elite Dangerous. There's more glitz and detail on everything, with lore dotted all over, but there still feels like no reason to actually do anything.

Yeh Star Citizen loves an SSD, NVMe if possible. They should really make it more clear on installing the game that you really do not want it on a normal mechanical disk right now.
There's no VR in Star Citizen right now to my knowledge. It runs at a low enough framerate as it is, can't imagine what trying VR would be like!

I think and hope there will be more depth than Elite going forwards. The base mechanics and promise suggest there will be, but as always it's waiting to see when and if they deliver on it. It's a problem all Sandbox games have to an extent, why to keep playing? Personally I think it's enough for it to just be fun game mechanics. Comparing to other Sandbox games I've played a lot of, I've never only played Factorio to launch the rocket, and never only played KSP to complete the objectives. Both games have kept me entertained for hundreds of hours just enjoying the mechanics. Star Citizen is currently doing the same, with added benefits of oh so much eyecandy!

SC doesnt have VR and your HOTAS will work fine on SC.

in regards to SC being as shallow as ED, i dont think it will for the given reasons:

  • 90% of the universe will be NPC driven
  • The new reputation system will allow limitless things to do

Even if SC came with just stanton but had most of the gameplay looops, it would offer a lot for players to do.

Some info on whats planned for it

Oh that's a shame.
I very briefly glanced at the settings page and saw it has all manner of VOIP, EyeTracking, Face Tracking and just abut everything else under the sun, so I just assumed it did VR too.
HOTAS should work, as it's a CH set, but you never know... It's not on the list of supported profiles.

Based on the video, it sounds like reputations in Freelancer but with more world details and prettier graphics. Essentially the same sort of same-same template missions that Elite also uses.
The problem with Elite is that there have been some AMAZING things going on... but you'd generally only know about them if you were in the right place at the right time and were following along on the right threads in the forum.

As Pinky said, the mechanics are pretty engaging and that's what kept me playing Elite for so long... But once you can do everything blindfolded, you're left with not much else to do.
I've had a fair few games where I've ended up with billions of credits and the ability to buy anything, yet have nothing to go and do with it and/or not enough crew to run it.

I'll see, of course, but so far I am not convinced.

Wouldn't worry about not being listed as having supported profiles. At worst that just means you'll bind all your keybinds as you chose.

For comparison, I use a VKB Gladiator NXT as my stick and use a DIY "throttle" setup I've built with an Arduino Micro. Bunch of analog sticks, slide pots, rotary encoders and microswitches all in some 3d printed enclosure. Ignoring the iffy solder joint I can't track down affecting one of the axis it works great! Currently working on a V2 of it which instead of an analog stick for forward/back throttle will have a jog wheel using a hall effect sensor + magnets, with a spring loaded gimbal setup to return it to centre. Plus other changes :)

Yeah, that's how it ought to work. CH is so old everyone should cater for it and it's recognised as pretty much a standard Windows controller.
But I have encountered a few games where it didn't work like that (dev's fault), so I'm always a little apprehensive. Sure it'll be fine, though.

Sounds interesting. Do you have any pics?
If I had the time and 'skillz', I'd love to build a custom HOTAS. I had thought I'd end up modding the CH, once upon a time, but so far it's not actually felt necessary.

Looks like this right now. Very ghetto, but functional.

I have left thumb stick forward/back as main throttle, but the slide pot also. Got carried away in the arduino code and the slide pot effectively acts as a "centre" for the left stick. So if I'm at half forward throttle on the slide, I can push the stick forward for full throttle, and all the way back for full reverse still - with the values scaling.
Right thumb stick is up/down/left/right strafe. Then just have various other buttons bound to the toggles and the 4 way "hat" switch on the left.

Seen that video linked with excitable comments on Discord just now. I'll catch up on that tomorrow.

Would love to see some more pics as you develop it.
