Main story in the Times sports section this morning:

Chelsea to release Joe Cole and Michael Ballack today:

Chelsea will confirm today the imminent departures of Joe Cole and Michael Ballack on free transfers after the pair failed to agree new contracts at Stamford Bridge.

The club have been negotiating for several months with the players’ representatives over extensions to contracts that expire this summer, but have been unable to agree terms and the players will leave as free agents on July 1.

Chelsea’s surprise announcement will spark a scramble for their signatures as, despite falling out of favour in West London, both players are very much in demand. Cole recovered from a disappointing domestic season to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad and is in contention to start their opening match of the tournament, against the United States on Saturday, while Ballack would have been in South Africa as Germany captain had he not injured his ankle in Chelsea’s FA Cup Final win over Portsmouth.

Children call each other names. Why cant you say a whole post without leading to childish insults. Maybe if you were a little more polite I would feel the need to actually read your dribble.

Lets leave it at that now. You think I talk #### and I think you talk ####. So we have a complete understanding of each other. ;)

I think most people would like both Ballack and Cole on a free. I certainly wouldnt

As well as being a massively dirty german ****. Really dont like him. Every time he plays he seems to do something that is designed to annoy and bait the opposition or ref.

Joe Cole on a free wouldn't be a bad signing for any of the top teams.
 
The release of Joe Cole surprised me a lot. England international, and a very decent player when fit.

Doesnt that just transfer to being passionate when he is in the team that you support :D

If he joins someone else, then yes I agree he is a dirty little german player :p

I would have thought that he would have liked to have finished off his career in Germany anyway so I would be surprised if he signed for anyone else in the premiership.
 
So dissapointed we're letting Joe Cole go. One of my favourite Chelsea players and will be sorely missed both on the field and off imo. We're really having to get the money bags out this summer to remain competitive, which to be fair has been a long time coming.
I hope RA isn't so reluctant to spend this summer as we're dropping players like flies. I can only assume we have some top talent already lined up to come to us.

To me the announcement indicates that Chelsea/RA will be getting one of the two players they have coveted for a long time now in Aguero or Kaka and I think the former being the more likely.

On the Joe Cole story, regardless of where he goes, you got to take your hat off to him as he has conducted himself professionally in front of the cameras on the subject of his club future.

Not really surprising tbh as its been reported for awhile that hes leaving Chelski.

Im more surprised at Ballack and Beletti leaving Chelski at the end of the month from what i heard on SSN this morning.

Dodgy 'Arry says he wants to sign Cole and Cole doesnt want to leave London so really only 2 teams are going to get him ie Arsenal or Spuds.

Signing replacements (presuming they're not bosman's) and paying their wages will cost them far more than £10m per year.

Ultimately Cole and Ballack have been let go because Chelsea no longer think they're good enough not for financial reasons.
