Not sure Fergie has gone to the press recently saying that both will be going no where whereas Carrick who has pretty much been our first choice centre midfielder over the last 4 years has suddenly found himself benched with no words of encouragement from SAF (not in the press anyway)

Personally our of the 3 Foster is the only one that I would let go, Berbatov would be handy as a 3rd choice striker (presuming we buy another one) & Carrick simply has to stay as he's our best midfielder

Its not like Fergie would announce it to the press either way though -but I agree there has been lack of encouragement towards Carrick unfortunately.

Personally IF we get a youngish yet experienced creative mid (Silva rumours occuring again today) there is less reason to have Berba along side the young strikers (Diouf, the mexican....and Owen) and Rooney - with our midfield (and wingers) also liking to get in the goals

Last few seasons the creativity has been in wide areas - if we bring it back more centrally then both wingers can attack the box more along with the striker(s) playing

(just a pet theory anyway) :)

edit - Tom, personally dont believe anything about Benzema , think he wants to stick it out in Spain (and no reason why he shouldnt)

Carrick is not our best midfielder, not even close. Scholes aged 36 is still better than Carrick and Scholes is about 8 years past his absolute prime for us. When it takes a player 3 months to settle into a new season, it should send warning signals out, we can't afford the luxury of having a player that needs 3 months to get into a new season, unless he has the impact of a Ronaldo type player, Carrick doesn't do much attacking wise and defensively there are lots of better players we could bring in. I'd ship him out this summer and get someone in who doesn't crap himself and give the ball away when an opposition player starts to close him down. Our entire midfield is now showing how reliant we were on Ronaldo.

Carrick, Foster and Berbatov have all shown they can't handle the pressure and need replacing.

If you gave Fletcher, Nani, Park the same flack you give Carrick none of them would have been at the club by the start of this season imo

Just because Carrick has one bad season he is out the door according to some people - what a load of **** imo

One bad season? Ronaldo papered over our lacklustre central midfield for years. His goalscoring bailed out the lack of goals from everyone else in midfield.

Carrick is a good player but the more I see him play, the more I see his weaknesses being highlighted by other teams, maybe we watch different teams but you're the one giving needless flack to Nani who has actually won games for us this year. Don't get me started on Park, there's a reason both Carrick and Park have sat on the bench for this latter part of the season.

its so we can rest him for the big arsenal match each season.

park is not very good technically...however he isnt a bad sub.

Carrick isnt a sub, but he's not good enough to be in the starting 11 for Man Utd imo.

Whilst granted that is a good point and for the past two seasons it does seem Carrick does need a bit of bedding in to a new season before he fully kicks into gear I still disagree about getting rid of him especially as he's miles better than Anderson & Gibson and Hargreaves cant be relied upon

As for goals from midfield I'd wager that Carrick's return this season isn't far off what the likes of Xavi, Sneijder & Ribery have for their respective clubs. There's not many goal scoring mid-fielders these days and even the ones that many harp on about their return isn't as great as you think. There's only Lampard, Fabregas & Gerrard who consistently hit the 20 mark and there's no chance of United signing any of them so unless Gibson picks up his game massively then we're going to have to look to the wide areas or our strikers for goals

To follow up the above

Sneijder has 8 goals for the season
Xavi has 6
Ribery has 5

Carrick has 5 for the season proof really that these 20 goal a season midfielders just dont exist anymore and if they do they all appear to play for our immediate rivals

whilst this may be true i am sure that neither of the names you mentioned completely flop in the big matches, nor do they make those crucial mistakes which cost you the game neither.

its this trait that is causing the problem, because he is highly undependable in the big matches.

Carrick's had a bad season there's no disputing that but to say he flops in all the big games is very far from the truth!

I can remember some MOTM performances from him in games against Arsenal & Chelsea in his first season especially

Fabregas and Gerrard also take pens for their respective clubs as well.

Would be interesting to know how many Chelsea have had though I suppose.

Should have said 20 ish

Gerrard can hardly be fit into that category either based on this season :p

Gerrard fits into 20 goals a season, Lampard is 20 goals in the prem and Fabregas probably hasn't averaged 10, let alone 20. This season he's WAY up on previous seasons, though I think he's at something ridiculous like 25 games, 15 goals and 13 assists in the league alone, 23 goals and 19 assists in 41 starts this year is phenomenal.

He's only previously scored above 5 in a season, in ALL competitions including spain, league and all cups, once, he scored 13. He's not a prolific scorer in any possible interpretation.

In all competitions he's scored, 3, 4, 4, 5, 13, 23(and counting).

Lampards last 6 seasons were 20,20,23, 17, 21, 33, so actually more like a solid 20 a season in all competitions, this year he's doing incredibly well again. He's second in assists only to Fabregas to be honest.

Gerrard, 13, 22, 14, 20, 29, 13, not at all bad, infact very very good but not in Franks league.

I can't believe some people think Lampard isn't that good, he really is and maybe the most consistant player in the league, for like 8 years or so now.

Those numbers do include international goals, but honestly those 3 are all rather crap at scoring for their country, though Lampard has had a stand out year with 6 England goals, even without them 27 goals is fantastic.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=8941&cc=5739

Espn rocks for those kinds of stats, likewise the budweiser premier league site is pretty good for prem league stats. If you check goals scored across all midfielders, only 3 are above 10, Lamps, Fabregas and Malouda, and Malouda has scored 9 of his in those 5/6/7-0 type games Chelsea have won and only 3 in tight games where the team hasn't already beaten the other team into submission, fluke year for him.

I don't think theres EVER been midfielders apart from Lampard who consistantly score 20 goals, ever, its a fallacy. Scholes in his best ever year got 20, and Giggs best was 15, and both of those were in a year they played over 50 games total.

Lampard, and to a lesser degree Gerrard are simply very rare scoring midfielders.

For those that care of Lampard's 26 goals in all comps this season 9 have been penalties. If memory serves me right he missed one at City as well

A massive amount of his goals have come in the second half of this season
