2/3 of lampards goals are penalties.

Not true, at least not true in the premier league:

03/04 - 2/10 were penalties
04/05 - 3/13
05/06 - 4/16
06/07 - 3/11
07/08 - 4/10
08/09 - 2/12
09/10 - 9/21

This gives an average of under 1/3 rather than 2/3s as you have suggested. Haven't checked non-premier league stats to be fair but in the premier league at least, most of his goals are not from penalties.

/endfactcheck :p

To follow up the above

Sneijder has 8 goals for the season
Xavi has 6
Ribery has 5

Carrick has 5 for the season proof really that these 20 goal a season midfielders just dont exist anymore and if they do they all appear to play for our immediate rivals

Xavi has 5 times as many assists though... I'm not sure about the others.

Lampard has easily been the best attacking midfielder in england for good knows how long.

I dont understand why when he is picked for england they insist on hamstringing him by playing him alongside Gerrard, you cant play both, but its not just a case of one or the other.
To play either Frank or the Scouse Jesus , you need totally different formations and playing staff.

Recent England form?

Sorry but it's Lampard for me, in the middle with Barry (even though I don't rate him that highly).

Gerrard's a risk at International level. He's not done enough to warrant his place, I'd much rather see a natural wider man, Milner? Cole? Lennon?

Milner Barry Lampard Lennon

Not Cole at the moment, he's been average at best this season and it's got nothing to do with him finding his way back from injury as the media keep suggseting.

Gerrard needs to be played behind the front man which is by far his best position imo.

I'd go with:

Lennon Lampard Barry Milner
------------Gerrard------------
------------Rooney------------

I'd like that across midfield a lot more if Barry stops trying to go forward and can just sit in the middle and let Lampard go forward.

Milner wide left, Lampard & Barry in the middle and Lennon on the right.

Based on the form he's shown this season Gerrard should count his lucky stars he's even in the squad for SA let alone be in the team

2/3 of lampards goals are penalties.

Even if that were true(which it isn't) it makes no difference, he has scored the goals and they all count. Lampard has been a consistent performer week in week out for a number of years.

He had a blip 18 months - 2 years ago iirc but since going to Chelsea he has lead by example

On form I wouldn't take Gerrard and that's not an anti Liverpool thing, I wouldn't take Carrick neither.

But, the hysteria surrounding the WC needs to die down and this is why.

If you look at the possible England first 11/squad in my eyes.

James
Johnson Ferdinand Terry A.Cole
Lennon/SWP/Walcott Lampard Gerrard J.Cole/Downing/Milner
Rooney/Crouch/Defoe/

+ Whatever other rubbish we have in reserve.

Dodgy keeper,
dodgy RB only just back from injury,
dodgy main CB, hardly played
dodgy Terry, who's form and attitude has stunk over the last few months
dodgy Cole, only just back from injury, slightly Gay
Right wings a joke, none of them have had a good season or have been injured for most of it.
Gerrard's form has been shocking
Downing or Milner or Barry or <insert left footed Englishman> all as bad as eachother, Milner has to be favourite though.
Crouch/Heskey/Defoe/C.Cole/ Whoever, all utter **** when you look at other top teams strike forces.

Lampard and Rooney are the only 2 you can count on really and even Franks England form is shoddy at times.

In short, we will need a lot of luck to get anywhere in the WC.

is this a transfers thread or whos the best midfielder thread?

apparently redknapp wants carrick so maybe a swapse deal for modric ? :)

Right wings a joke, none of them have had a good season or have been injured for most of it.

In the first half of the season Lennon was head and shoulders (well metaphorically ;)) above any other English right winger. He not only pops up with the odd goal, but his assist rate was exactly what you expect of a top quality winger.

Against Man City was his first start this year though and was showing he was not far off from getting back to his best. Hopefully we'll see him tear Burnley a new one and the room for debate will be no more.

:)
