He's a more than capable player. He had a great start to his career with us but like a lot of young defenders, he started to get caught out positionally. The biggest problem for him was the fact that he had to play all season because Aurelio was always injured.

We should be looking to keep hold of him and bringing in another LB to compete with him. If he does go then we'll have no first team LB's at the club; we had 3 of them 6 months ago.

Wasn't it Insua that has been talked about going to Italy for two or more transfer windows already, does it not occur to any of you that, well, he just wants to go. If he doesn't like LIverpool and wants to go to Italy, which would be a much closer lifestyle to Argentina than England is, thats up to him surely. IT seemed clear in the past while that the Insua deal almost went through previously, just negotiating on the price.

As for wanting him or not, he's decent going forwards(something I don't really agree with, a lobbed goal against a team falling apart doesn't suggest world class to me) but poor positionally, which also means poor defensively.

You've got a left and right back who are both decent going forwards, and horrible at the job required when playing at left and right back. You've had your worst season in ages, primarily because you've started playing a left and right back who are inept at defending. Why on earth would you want to keep him, he's no where near world class going forwards, and horrible defensively.

What exactly do you think went wrong defensively last year, if it wasn't the left and right back, what was it, if you think it was the left and right back, and the fact both are positionally poor, seriously why would you want them at the club. Because so often crap young players become great older players? 5million seems like a steal, as far as I can tell he signed a 3 year contract in 2008, meaning he has 1 year left on his deal. For a player that seemingly wants to leave, 5million for a pretty poor defender seems like very good price.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and suggest that if you sell your "only" left back, you might just buy another one.

Don't know what's worse, Purslow controlling our transfers or the proof that Hodgson's nothing more than a coach and puppet for the money men. Gutted :(

Indeed.
Sell the clubs only recognisable LB, smart move!
Everyone knows we are desperate for a replacement now, sounds like a good time for them to push the price up and up.

Micah Richards to Everton, very soon.

You heard it here first ;)

I'm not sure we have the required £25 but in all honesty I'd be happy with him as our right back to replace Hibbert whose long over due being dropped.

I think we could get enough back out of him to make him englands right back again.

It's a joke. We've got all these headlines about Torres not being for sale after Hodgson met with him; but Hodgson said himself that he only spoke about football and that he then left Torres to talk with Purslow alone and that he's not sure what was said.

The writing's been on the wall ever since Purslow took it upon himself to meet with Real over signing VDV behind Rafa's back last season.

There is that as well as the fact he's said he wants to stay at Anfield. This decision hasn't got any thing to do with football, he's been targeted by the money men and pushed out of the club.
.

And this is how the money men try and convince the real stars of the team (Torres, Gerrard, Masch?) that they should stay and get the team back into the top 4

Surely this means two of those three at least will go also - Liverpool arent going to get a player in that position for that kind of money (did someone mention less than £5m?) thats as good as Insua right now (maybe in time, but hows that going to convince the three mentioned they should stay for another few years)

Seems like a disaster waiting to happen

I don't think any of us knew how good we had it when Coco was around because we've got a whole bloody circus act to contend with now :(

I honestly don't think they want to convince them to stay. It makes no sense keeping players that are worth millions when they can cash in on them before selling up.

Degen can play LB if required, also it wouldn't suprise me to see Agger deployed there, would let him field Carragher and Skrtel at CB.

Maybe he'll even want to try out a 3-5-2 type formation in an effort to get the best out of Johnson, although I would have thought Insua would have fitted into such a plan...

Hodgson's quotes get more revealing and confirm all of our suspicions by the day:
Asked about the situation, Hodgson told Sky Sports News: "I'm not a betting man, so that doesn't actually play a big part for me.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club. I know we've been connected with him and that's good to know - that we've been connected with players of that quality.

"I had a very brief chat with him a little while back but, if you want to know about transfer targets, you'll have to ask [Liverpool managing director] Christian Purslow."

Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Surely we're going to sign at least 1 left back, but the 3-5-2 is something I've thougt we should have looked at last season.

I understand where you are coming from - but surely the stars are going to be required to get you back into the top four, so that a high profile buyer of the club is found?

I cant see the next few seasons going well if they leave this summer (Im not suggesting it would definitely be better if they stayed, but its surely more likely)

After watching our first pre-season game today I can honestly say that I don't think we need to sign anyone apart from a goal scoring striker (Di Santo is out of his depth & Sturridge isn't ready) as we've got some fantastic youngsters in every position, even down to the 15yr old lad at RB.
There was some excellent maturity, skill and confidence on show by kids basically :)
