After all that, I'm not totally against signing Brad Jones.
That was meant to be 'now' rather than 'not'.

If Poulson is all we get as a replacement for Masc then that's rather worrying

He will be all we get but I'm not overly worried.

Masch is class but with the improvement in Lucas' game, Aquilani now being fit, Gerrard moving back to CM and no CL football (where he was most important to us), his importance to the side isn't so great.

Also you've got to remember that we've got no money but need to sign another striker. As it stands it appears as if we're only going to have ~£10m to spend on a striker so spending any more on a CM would have eaten into that even further.

I certainly hoped we'd have been able to sign somebody better but for ~£4.5m, I can't think of who else we could have gone for.
I wonder if they are selling that Cavalieri, and if so - maybe they are getting more than the £2.5m or whatever they are paying? Penny pinching if so.

Almost certainly would mean he's off. There's been reports over the last 12 months or so linking him with moves away and figures of ~£3m being reported.

Middlesbrough insist no agreement has been struck to take goalkeeper Brad Jones to Liverpool.

Probably good news for you Baz :p

Skysports.com understands Fulham are now the favourites to win the chase to sign AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele.

If we're going to sign a striker that rarely scores, I'd rather him than Santa Cruz.

I'm surprised at Bruce selling Kenwyne Jones to Stoke, especially seeing as they will be mid-table rivals this season I imagine.

I can't imagine he's thinking that Wellbeck is a direct replacement for him, so maybe Bruce isn't going to play two up front this season, and it'll be a 4-3-3. There's very little backup for Bent now though, and with the loss of Cana as well, I'd be a tad peeved if I was a Mackem.

If I'm honest I am a little peeved about the loss of decent players.. Cana want CL football so there ain't much we can do.. Fulop cried about wanting to leave.. then wanted to stay.. so I'm glad we got rid of him tbh.

Jones.. £8m.. I woulda snatched their hands off.
He is.. by far.. the most lethargic player I've ever witnessed.. and the only player that has caused me to stand up in the stadium and scream at them. He has talent but will just not put the effort in. I'll be surprised if he makes any kind of impact this season for Stoke..

Replacements?

Welbeck will be a good loan move.. he has lots of promise.
I'm not sure about other acquisitions.. perhaps Santa Cruz (Injury prone) or Crouch (Not sure how he'd link with bent.. perhaps another Quinn/Phillips style combo?)

Either way.. I think we are honestly heading for a similar table position this season as we haven't made many improvements to the team.. just the wage bill.

However... watch out for Jordan Henderson.. he is a hell of a prospect :D

I heard SAF wouldn't loan players out unless they were going to get quite a few games...could this mean Wellbeck will get a few games? Tempted to whack him in my Fantasy Football team. :o

Yeah, it would be a shocking deal for Liverpool tbh.

My Twitter feed (I know, but whatever) is going mad regarding Schwarzer to Arsenal, lots of people saying it's done. Some saying another CB is imminent for Arsenal too.

I wouldn't be totally against Hleb being included in any deal as long as he's not being valued at anything more than £1-2m. He's a tidy player (albeit past his best) and in terms of senior players, our squad is still small. Obviously we'd be going after better players than him in an ideal world but we can't afford to be too fussy when we've got no money.

Once you discount the likes of Spearing, Darby, Plessis etc (who won't play), we've only got a first team squad of 23 players at the moment with at least 2 of those likely to leave.

It's a retarded transfer. We need another striker and cover for our fullbacks so I don't see why we would accept a 30 year old Premiership reject when we've got more than enough players in the middle. It's so retarded it's exactly the sort of thing I'd expect us to do.

30 years old? Can't get in your current team because you're ****? Welcome to Liverpool! Come and stunt the growth of the few decent youth team players we have :(

I was talking about him coming in as well as a striker and LB.

I wouldn't call Hleb a reject too; the season he left Arsenal he was 1 of their best players in their best season in a long time. Obviously he's not the player he was but his versatility (he played on either wing or off the striker) would make him a reasonable addition providing he's valued at no more then £2m.

With Masch and Insua likely to leave, even bringing in a striker and LB would leave us with 23 first team players. As it stands we've got absolutely no worries with this 25 man squad rule as not only do we only currently have 23 players likely to play, but 4 of those are under 21 anyway.

edit: all it takes is 2 or 3 injuries to attacking players and we're left with absolutely no attacking players on the bench again, just like last season. So far this summer, all we've done is replace Benayoun and Riera with Cole and Jovanovic. Do you want to be in a situation where we're having to play defenders on the wings again like we had to last season?

edit2: The Masch/Barca stories and any possibility of us signing Hleb have been rubbished anyway. I still maintain that another versatile attacking player (as well as another striker) would be a decent addition to our squad, and given our finances, I can't see us picking up anybody of any real note.

Hleb is worth in my mind about £5m - he was never that good, doesn't score goals and is 29.

£12m plus Hleb is less than we paid for Masch in the first place. This is beyond a joke if true. I really do despair.
