That's the problem, he said he has one big job left in him. In his mind, it's England.[snip]

What a difference twenty-four hours makes :p

As much as I like him, I can't see him in the England job, particularly given Capello has re-upped. He is clearly a great motivator, and a very smart coach, but England coach, sorry, no chance. The (very) recent rumblings regarding Rafa would suggest to me that he might be Inter-bound, which leaves Hodgson at Fulham. Great news for Fulham fans, but do you think he [Hodgson] might be left a little frustrated?

Leeds will sign Billy Paynter on a free on 1st July. Didn't see it posted here yet unless I'm blind (probably am).

Another decent signing for Leeds and again on a free, still the full transfer kitty left with another 3-4 people to bring in.

Keep dreaming. The reason they went for Paynter who has had one good season in League 1, not the Championship, is because he was free.

Montgomery looked like he was joining us from the Blunts and then doesn't, probably because Ken wasn't willing to shell out the pennies.

About time Liverpool got a new manager in. The team seems like it's going stale, need some new ideas and a fresh start. Whether they'll find a better manager than Benitez is another thing, for his faults, he's still one of the better managers around.

£3 million? If that's true I hope he tells them where to stick their offer and hangs on for what he's owed.

Exactly...if Liverpool want him out then fair enough but he shouldnt really take anything less than what hes owed in all honesty...hope he sticks to his guns although SSN saying they are currently negotiating his payoff clause.

Just read that Joe Cole to Arsenal rumour and it made me chuckle. I don't think so somehow...
We don't need more offensive players. I think all we'll get is a defender no-one's heard of and a middling keeper, if we're lucky!

According to JC 's uncle.....from some dodgy sport website anyway ....He will sign for Spurs if Utd deal falls through (which hinges on SA performances)

probably means squat - along with rumour that Yaya Toure is mulling over a £17m move to Utd (great if that is true, just not sure it will happen)

This is why Barca are only offering us £30mil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webster_ruling

Cesc signed his contract as an 8 year deal over 3 years ago. It looks like the subsequent extensions/improved terms he has signed that have improved his wages don't affect his eligibility to use the Webster ruling in his favour. So he can buy his own way out of the remaining 5 years of his contract on £110k a week which equals £28,600,000

Perhaps this is what Arsene explained to him in their long discussion; that Cesc owed it to us to secure a big fee for his transfer and so he should not buy out his contract himself. However Barca will be in his ear telling him exactly the opposite...

:( :( :( :( :( :( :(

well without knowing the details, I have no idea, but I presume because their respective contracts were recently signed, and hadn't already lasted over the 3 year protected period.

Thought Redknapp recently said that he thinks a club has already signed him? Would he say that if it was Spurs that were snapping him up? He'd be a good buy for them but I don't think they could afford to blow all that dolla on his wages.

Then why did Real Madrid pay so much for Kaká and Ronaldo? I can't imagine Ronaldo's remaining contract was worth £80 000 0000... although I can't really remember the details of his situation, tbh.

we did keep him signing new higher and higher valued contracts each year or so - maybe for this purpose?

but yes 80million over 5 years equals something like £307,692 per week...

Certainly not. Modric is only on 50k.

Think our highest earners are King and Keane both on 65k. Not sure about Keane now though since his return. Would say it'd be the same though. Probably also the reason why Dermot Desmond had to pay Keane's wages out of his own pocket.

If Joe Cole is already on £80k pw why would he go somewhere for less if the only reason Chelsea seem to be willing to let him go is that's he's asked for £100k?
If Chelsea want him and and no-one else can match his current £80k he might as well stay, I think he thinks he's surplus to requirements now and is willing just to take the best offer he can get.

well exactly - your explanation isnt the only reason why I said "probably means squat" lol :)

Seems like Joe Cole wants guaranteed playing time which he can't be promised at Chelsea. He'd probably play most at Man Utd as they're the team which are crying out for a top creative CM/AM/winger/whatever

Fabregas won't buy out his contract, it's never been done before and if it ever happens it will open up all kinds of bad doors. There's also an agreement amongst all clubs not to buy any player who buys out his contract. This is just another one of Barca's dirty tricks, if you remember last time they wanted an Arsenal player (Hleb), this story emerged pretty quickly. Any club or player who did this would looked at in a very poor light by the rest of football

I read on Sky Sports that Cole wanted £100k per week and Chelsea were only willing to pay him £80k but then removed even that offer when they couldn't reach an agreement with him, so now it seems more a case of Chelsea just not wanting him any more.

There is no way Fab will buy out his contract. But if that did happen then at least we would get £28m at the very least. I think that would leave a very bad feeling between him and the Arsenal fans tho so I dont believe for a second he would do that to the club he calls `home`

I really am not sure what way this is going to go now. I think it will end with a move for around £35 - 40m. I would rather it ended sooner rather than later tho. The WC is only going to increase the prices of players and can see us getting a couple of over priced flops in return for the money generated by the sale of Fab.

With Campbell going, Gallas and Silvestra also looking like going then we are going to have to spend about £30m just on defenders and that only takes us back to where we are now. Then probably(or hopefully) £10m on a good keeper.

Sadly I see another tropheyless season ahead :(

Erm, source?

It's not official so I doubt there's a credible source really, it's a gentleman's rule apparently. If Barcelona actually forced him to do it, which is highly unlikely, then they'd obviously be willing to break any goodwill agreement and sign him

Also, I'm not 100% sure but I think Fifa would frown upon a player buying out his contract and then suddenly receiving 30m into his bank account, I'm sure it would be legally challenged and there would be a lot of issues. If a big player does it and sets the precedent, he's effectively going to make contracts worthless, as it would show anybody can do it anytime. I thought the clause was for players who were being mistreated and having their career's ruined, e.g. playing in the reserves, not for players who just fancy ignoring their contract and moving to another club, wasn't Webster (the guy it's named after) being played in the reserves as a punishment?

Another thing, didn't he sign a new contract very recently with a bump up to £110k? He'd have to wait 2+ years to do it all anyway, so it's not an immediate worry
