*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Sounds reasonable to me. I think the express is an amazing gateway (ha) into the Ubiquiti ecosystem.
i recently picked up an express, works great of course with more features than the sky router it replaced.

however im not sure about the wifi, it may be fine and im only curious because i now have data i didnt have before with the old router.
i live in a small flat, so 1 unit should be more than enough coverage with only internal plasterboard walls between devices. signal strength is in the 60's on 5ghz and around 50 for the 2.4ghz devices.

i might pick up the cloud gateway ultra when it comes in stock and relocate the express as an AP.

also just for comparison as its my first unifi product, cpu usuage is usually around 20-30 fluctuating throughout the day, and memory is at 70.
its perfectly fine for day to day use and i like the simplicity and clean look of it.
i do wonder how it impacts gaming or if there is anything i should be looking to play around with in settings.

That's my plan, start with the express, and either add a second for more coverage, or get something like a Dream Machine SE to build out from.

I love the DM SE, does everything I can realistically see me needing for the foreseeable.
Got that and a U6 Pro at the minute but looking to add a Pro Max 24 switch and a doorbell and camera soon.

Anyone checked out the new App Unifi Portal?

The chat thing is pretty interesting, I said how many APs for a double storey house with brick walls around 55 sq meters and it's suggested 2 APs.

I then said how to arrange them.

"For optimal coverage in a double-storey house with brick walls, here's how you can arrange the APs:

Central Placement: Try to place each AP in a central location on each floor to maximize coverage. Avoid corners or far ends of the house.
Avoid Obstructions: Keep APs away from large metal objects, mirrors, and thick walls, as these can interfere with signal propagation.
Vertical Alignment: If possible, align the APs vertically with each other on different floors. This helps in providing consistent coverage across floors.
Ceiling Mount: If the APs are ceiling-mountable, this is often the best option for even distribution of the WiFi signal. If ceiling mounting is not possible, placing them high on a wall is a good alternative.

Remember, the goal is to ensure that the signal strength in areas of overlapping coverage between the APs is between -65 and -70 dBm for optimal performance. You might need to adjust the placement based on specific dead zones or areas with weak signals after initial setup and t"esting.

Switch Lite 8 port now installed.

Means I can remove a POE injector behind my dining room table which makes me happy.

Now also have the Flex Mini in my office, powered by POE which means all my office devices can be hard wired now.

I legitimately have nothing else to upgrade really at this point. (Well, I could upgrade the UK-ultra to WiFi 6 but, I’ve seen no point yet. I get my full WiFi speed currently).

i agree with a couple of commenters that the express WiFi performance is a bit underwhelming in terms of range. Not a problem for me with another AP but, something to bear in mind.

Yeah I saw that, shame it's Google only at the moment, why not allow it to go to an SFTP server or SMB file share, would be much simpler.

Are you finding WiFi coverage lacks with the Express compared to your Sky Hub?

no not at all, but i was hoping to see how others wifi compared.

everything works as it did with the sky hub, thats why i said that maybe it is because i can actually see the data on the UX, maybe i am over analysing it.

the only thing that has made me question the express is the signal strength to my room, my iphone has always had full signal but with the express i see it on 2 bars sometimes.
when i check signal strength its around 70 all other devices around the apartment are in the 60's or less, speed test works fine, slightly lower as a result when i am in my room.
so maybe someone else with an express can compare, it may be my specific device.
it may well be the case that the sky hub had a stronger wifi signal but it does not impact day to day usage.

No external antenna on the express right? So I won't be surprised if it's worse in that regard than my AC66u, but the whole point of moving to a proper platform is to extend coverage anyway with an additional AP.

Played around with OSFP today in Network Application Version 8.1.111

Eventually got it to talk to NSX, however if you have Jumbo Frames enabled as a global switch setting, then you'll likely find it will get stuck on ExStart due to MTU mismatch (UDM was talking at 9216). There's no option in the UI to change this or add mtu-ignore. You can do it using vtysh on the CLI, but that's dependent on whether the other side will respect that (NSX doesn't support it). Removing the UDM from Global Switch settings and then disabling Jumbo Frame made it drop in straight away.

It's nice that it's finally come to the UI, but don't expect any advanced options and anything you do change via CLI will get overwritten at some point no doubt.

So I managed to grab one of the Cloud Gateway Ultra's yesterday before they went out of stock again. This will be replacing an old USG3, and I was hosting the controller software on a mini PC running Home Assistant OS. So, whats the best way to swap out the USG3 and get the controller and my home setup installed on the new CGU?

I've read about possible needing to delete the USG3 device, then creating a backup, before loading that backup onto the UCG. Is that correct, or not needed, or best to simply turn off the HAOS controller, and plug in the UCG and start from scratch?

I would personally just setup the new Ultra using the old settings. I have had issues before trying to migrate devices with old/new backups so I wouldn't trust them.

Personally I would start fresh and manually set everything up. It's more of a pain, but far less likely to have any issues.

Ok, sounds like from scratch would be best. So, 1.unadopt and delete the USG3. 2.Turn off the controller on HAOS on the miniPC. 3.Connect up the UCG, and then 4. spend hours  typing in all the setting and static IP's for devices and AP settings etc? Any quick/best way of getting all the setting apart from going through each screen and writing them down? :o
