It's from when they started to introduce 'squad' based rewards. Someone somewhere in Gaijin must have decided (didn't see anything about it on the forums) that it was unfair that solo players couldn't be eligible for the 'teamwork' awards and stuff, so if you fly solo you get added to a randommer so if you fight close by you can still be awarded 'teamwork' and potentially 'best squad'.

Never cared for it myself, the rewards are only lions not XP, are tiny, and I've far too many lions to use anyway! (wish i could swap a few for Golden Eagles, but that'll never happen)
