You can buy as many port slots as you want.
Definitely worth keeping the odd lower tier ship as it will help you run your higher tier ships later on. I'm also keeping a tier 1 and 2 handy for now so I can play with newcomers still. Keeping my tier 3 St Louis, because it's awesome.
Unless you are planning on playing divisions with friends through all tiers though, you do not need to keep a ship of every tier.
Cool good to know. I only started on Friday and the highest thing I've unlocked so far is the Tier 6 destroyer 'Mutsuki'. But I find it really good and was looking at the concealment on the highers tiers ones and they aren't as good so I was thinking the Mutsuki is worth keeping.
I've unlocked the Kongo too and I am enjoying that now I've got the hang of leading and how much to do it by. Aircraft carrier I've unlocked the Japanese one but not sure I want to really use it - not really my style and the cruiser I need to do this week.
I am sticking with the Japanese stuff till the British and German stuff get's released down the line.
It's a really good game though. So thank you all for pointing it in my direction.

^^ Glad you are enjoying it. Considering you have only had a weekend to play unlocking Mutsuki and Kongo is good going. You must have pumped some hours in !
JPN Cruisers are good fun, think of them as big destroyers. But the Tier 5 Furutaka will make you want to cry. That was a bit of a grind, but now I have the Aoba all is right with the world.
I would definitely keep the Minekaze, one of the best DD's in the game and one of the best to make some money out of when you get to later tiers and repair bills almost sap the entire money pool!

Yep, I've gone a bit mad on it. But there is something quite satisfying about sneaking up on everyone and unleashing torpedo hell on them.
Most kills in one match was 6 all with torpedoes. I am getting better with the gunnery now too just takes time.

Have they improved the difference in he vs ap? When I played closed beta he was the way to go as it was op, would like to see a change
Cruiser on Cruiser, If you are broadside and the other Cruiser is HE spamming, I take great pleasure in smashing out the AP Citadel hits.

Some people are insanely accurate at long range with the battleships they are landing every volley. I definitely need to practice my gunnery skills more. I did a few division matches last night and it was nice to work with a bit more co-ordination.
AA guns are automatic (unless you press P to toggle them - good idea if you are trying to stay stealthed in a destroyer).
Torps get fired in the same way as the main guns but you have to select them (by pressing 3 on ships equipped with them). Make sure you select your target by 'looking at it' and pressing x. That way you get the grey targetting aid.
Key thing is don't get spotted first, be in a position to support and generally stay together ! Plus DON'T forget the map objectives, I see so many games lost as people chase down the aircraft carrier and ignore the capping.
Lastly you'll see people refer to ships by the following:
DD - destroyer
CA - Cruiser
BB - Battle ship
CV - aircraft carrier
